Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the surface microstructure of chitosan films on the contact angle. Films without plasticising additives made of chitosan or regenerated chitosan were selected for the tests. A sessile drop method based on the European Pharmacopoeia was used to determine the contact angle. Due to the method of film production, the contact angle measurements were made on both the top and bottom surfaces of the film. For chitosan or regenerated chitosan films, the method of preparation slightly affected the difference in wettability between the top and bottom of the films, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. On the other hand, the wettability of the top and bottom of cellulose films varied greatly depending on the side of the film. Both chitosan and cellulose films had a homogeneous structure. There were differences in the microstructure between the top and the bottom of the sample in the cellulose film, a factor that affected the contact angle and thus the wettability of the surface.

Opis:
Solution spreading and Langmuir-Blodgett/Schaefer techniques were used for preparation of chitosan/phospholipid (DPPC) films on air plasma treated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plates. The surface wetting properties were determined based on the measurements of the advancing and receding contact angles of water, formamide and diiodomethane. The contact angle hysteresis model of Chibowski was applied to estimate the total surface free energy values. The coatings properties were found to be affected by molecular organisation and packing depending on the preparation technique. Phospholipid molecules modified the chitosan film surface by changing the kind and magnitude of interactions, which is revealed in the values of surface free energy. These findings may be helpful for the development of new generation polymer-supported biocompatible coatings with anti-thrombogenic and anti-bactericidal properties, thus expanding the spectrum of chitosan applications.

Opis:
In this paper, the wettability of chitosan/phospholipid (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine – DPPC), chitosan/lipid (cholesterol – Chol) and chitosan/protein (cyclosporine A – CsA) films on air plasma activated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) plates was studied. The layers were prepared using the solution spreading technique and their surface wetting properties were determined based on the measurements of the advancing and receding contact angles of water, formamide and diiodomethane. Moreover, based on the contact angle hysteresis model of Chibowski, values of total surface free energy were estimated. Significant changes in PEEK polarity were observed after plasma activation and modifications with Ch/DPPC, Ch/Chol and Ch/CsA layers. These molecules modulate the chitosan film surface by changing the type and magnitude of interactions, which is revealed in the values of surface free energy. These results may be important for the development and implementation of highly biocompatible bone substitution polymers coated with chitosan film with anti-fungal and anti-bactericidal properties. Those systems based on chitosan may also carry and release biologically active substances which could be relevant in the new generation of drug delivery systems.

Opis:
The surface properties of chitosan acetate (ChA), polyacrylamide (PAM) and ChA/PAM mixtures have been investigated by the tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) and monitored by contact angle measurements. Chitosan is blended with polyacrylamide in acetic acid solution and this solution is cast to prepare the mixture film. Measurements of the contact angle for two different liquids (diiodomethane and glycerol) on the surface of chitosan acetate. The surface free energy (γs) as well as dispersive (gsd) and polar (gsp) components were calculated from contact angle values by Owens-Wendt methods using an appropriate computer program. The values of polar and dispersive components of surface free energy show that PAM films are more polar than chitosan acetate films. In the case of ChA/PAM mixtures, the values of surface free energy and polar component are reduced significantly compared with pure polymers. This behavior indicates rather hydrophobic character of this surface. The changes of topography images were considered by determining the root mean square (RMS) deviation in the image data. The study of blends by AFM showed a completely different morphology when compared with pure components. The roughness of blends increases with the increase of ChA content. This may indicates a strong interaction between the polymeric components.
