Opis:
To increase the profitability of the pulp and paper industry, additional value added products from lignocelluloses are needed, and consistent with this goal, a biorefinery concept based on the sodium carbonate pre-extraction of Trema orientalis prior to pulping was proposed. The solid content in the sodium carbonate pre-extracted liquor was much lower than the hot water pre-extraction, which affected the pre-hydrolysis yield and overall pulp yield positively. The alkaline pre-extraction had a beneficial effect on delignification in the subsequent soda-AQ-pulping. In addition, the alkaline pre-extraction improved the pulp bleachability. The papermaking properties of the alkaline pre-extracted soda-AQ pulp were very close to non-extracted pulp after D0EpD1 bleaching.

Opis:
The suitability of Eucalyptus grandis bark and root for the pulp and paper industry was investigated. The bark of E. grandis was cooked using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) in the kraft process, while the root of E. grandis was cooked using the soda-anthraquinone (AQ) process. Four different charges (0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7%) of NaBH 4 and AQ used as catalysts were added to the cooking liquor used in the processes. The chemical, mechanical and optical properties of the produced pulps were investigated and characterized. The yields, viscosity values, kappa numbers, as well as the brightness, tensile, burst and tear indices of the pulps were determined. The yield (RP: 39.1%, BP: 36.8%), viscosity value (RP: 897 cm 3/g, BP: 650 cm 3/g) and the kappa numbers (RP: 90, BP: 50) of the pulps produced from the root (RP) were higher than those of the pulps produced from bark (BP). The catalysts generally affected all the pulp properties, improving the properties of BP and RP. It was concluded that E. grandis bark and root can be suitable for the pulp and paper industry.

Opis:
The predicted scarcity of wood-based fibre supplies has necessitated the search for alternative sources including non-woods by paper manufacturers. As a raw material for pulping, hemp bast fibre has some potential. To provide a guide for the pulp and paper industries, the suitability of hemp bast fibres for the pulp and paper industries was evaluated in this study, and blending trials with wastepaper pulp were conducted. In the hemp bast fibre preparation, the length of the fibres was first reduced to 4 mm. Subsequently, kraft pulping was applied to them. Along with the preparation of wastepaper pulps, hemp bast fibres and wastepaper handsheets were prepared according to a blending plan. Finally, the handsheets were subjected to paper strength tests. The properties of raw, cooked and beaten hemp bast fibres were investigated by characterisation methods such as optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Additionally, carbohydrate components, solubility and ash content tests were run on raw hemp bast fibres. As a result of the experiments and analyses, the targeted results were achieved. Following the resolution of the fibrillation problem, it was determined that hemp bast fibre pulp can be used in adequate blends of wastepaper pulp when the strength values of the end product are desired to be increased (including CMT, CCT, RCT, SCT, stiffness and tear resistance) or decreased (air resistance).

Opis:
This study measured the decrease in some mechanical properties of kraft paper used in packaging and bag production by examining the colour changes occurring in accordingly prepared standard samples subjected to UV influence. Thus, it is aimed to predict the mechanical properties of packages that have been exposed to sunlight over long periods of time with the colour change measurement, which is a non-destructive test, without the packaging deformation. Since there are mechanical differences between the cross-machine width and machine length of fabricated papers, these were measured separately. Measurements were made on papers exposed to UV for 0, 120, 240, 360, 480, 600, and 720 h. Tensile strength, strain at break, and tensile energy absorption (TEA) values were measured and also predicted for the kraft paper. For the prediction, the time and colour change values were used as independent variables, whereas the mechanical properties were taken as the dependent variables. The relationship between the time and colour change and the tensile strength, strain at break, and TEA variables in both the cross-machine and the machine directions were significant at the 5% level, and the R2 values were within acceptable limits. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the papers under UV effect decreased proportionally with the increase of the UV time.

Opis:
This comparative study was carried out to investigate the effect of nanosilver, silver-clay nanohybrid, and silver-milled clay nanohybrid coatings on the antibacterial characteristics of paper. Nanosilver (25 ppm) was used as a singleand double-layer coating. The results demonstrated that treatment with pure nanosilver was more efficient in the reduction of microbial growth. Also, milling of clay enabled better maintenance of silver nanoparticles, and led to a greater decrease in bacterial growth than in the case of the original silver-clay nanohybrid. Evaluation of the sustainability of antibacterial characteristics confirmed that, although pure nanosilver treatment achieved better performance in the first 15 minutes than nanohybrid samples, the performance of the nanohybrids improved with the passing of time. As expected, the treatments decreased the brightness of paper, while the opacity increased significantly; pure nanosilver treatment led to lower brightness than the others, and the opacity was higher in the case of the silver-clay nanohybrid than with the other treatments.

Opis:
Co(salen) powders were homogeneously scattered over a ceramic fibre network to give a catalyst paper and the Co(salen) paper was tested for the oxidative degradation of a kraft lignin using H2O2 as an oxidant. Due to the structural effect of the interconnected 3D-network, the catalyst paper exhibited a higher performance in the oxidation of kraft lignin with a oil yield of 23.27 % than the original Co(salen) powder with an oil yield of 10.63 %, along with excellent recycling performance. 2,6-Dimethoxyphenol (2.32 mg/kg kraft lignin), vanillin (3.80 mg/kg kraft lignin), and syringaldehyde (2.63 mg/kg kraft lignin) were found to be the main products in the oil obtained. In addition, the structural changes in the kraft lignin were also studied during the process. The phenolic compounds were formed through side chain oxidation together with the oxidative cleavage of β-O-4 linkage.

Opis:
Chemical treatment with sodium hydroxide, formamide and ethyl acetate is shown to affect certain properties of paper made from recovered fibres. Sodium hydroxide treatment improves the brightness of sheets by approx. 0.12–17.2% under similar recycling conditions. All chemical treatments usually improve the tensile and burst strengths of sheets to some degree. The highest tensile and burst strength values of 42.09 Nm/g and 2.60 kPa m2/g were obtained at the first recycling stage with 10% ethyl acetate treatment (O10Et1), and these represent approximately 142.2% and 100% improvement of tensile and burst strength respectively. In contrast, although the results revealed that certain chemical treatments markedly improved both tensile and burst strengths, there is some variation observed for tear strengths. The largest improvement in tear strength (72.9%) was found at the third recycling stage with 5.0% formamide treatment (O5Fa3), followed by O10Et3 (33.9%) and O10Na3 (29.2%). It is important to note that the highest tear strength value of 9.09 Nm2/g was found at the second recycling stage of the control samples. The results clearly show that the tensile and burst strengths of sheets can be improved by certain chemical treatments, but there is no correlation with tear strengths.
