Opis:
This paper presents the results of investigations into the use of 56 nm nano iron(III) oxide as a combustion rate modifier in a solid heterogeneous rocket propellant (SHRP). A series of solid heterogeneous rocket propellants based on HTPB and ammonium perchlorate with different nano iron(III) oxide contents in the propellant composition were prepared and investigated. The ballistic parameters of the examined propellants were determined by combustion in a laboratory rocket motor (LRM). The ballistic properties were evaluated in the pressure range 5-10 MPa. It was found that the linear burning rate at 7 MPa was increased by 15% for 1% nano iron(III) oxide content in comparison to 0.2% content. Determination of the sensitivity to friction and impact, the calorific value, hardness and decomposition temperature of the derived propellants were also investigated.

Combustion data of ammonium chlorate and nitrite have been analyzed. The leading reactions of combustion of both NH4ClO3 and NH4NO2 at low pressures have been shown to proceed in the condensed phase, with the burning rate defned by the decomposition kinetics at the surface temperature. The kinetics of NH4ClO3 and NH4NO2 decomposition have been calculated by using a condensed-phase combustion model.

Opis:
Novel lead and copper salts based on anthraquinone, including 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone,1,4,5,8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone and 1,8-dihydroxy-4,5-dinitroanthraquinone, were prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis (EA), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The catalytic effects of these compounds on the decomposition of nitrocellulose (NC) and on the combustion properties of double-base (DB) and composite modified double-base (CMDB) propellants were comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrated that the burning rate is significantly increased (by 200%) in the lower pressure range (2-6 MPa) as compared to the control systems without added anthraquinone-based salts. Concurrently, the pressure exponents (n) were obviously lower, exhibiting a “wide-range plateau” combustion phenomenon in the middle-pressure region. Specifically, for the DB propellants such a plateau region extended from 10 MPa to 16 MPa for n equal to 0.10, from 10 MPa to 18 MPa for n equal to 0.11 and from 8 MPa to 18 MPa when n is 0.05. In the case of RDX-CMDB propellants, the plateau was found to be in the range 6-18 MPa, with n in the range 0.16-0.27, depending on the type of catalyst, in contrast to the reference CMDB sample, which was characterized by n equal to 0.7 for the same pressure range.

Opis:
A high energy combustion agent (tetraethylammonium decahydrodecaborate, BHN) was prepared by means of an ion exchange reaction (IER), and the prepared samples were characterized by the advanced diagnostic techniques of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) etc. The effects of BHN particles on the hazard and combustion properties of fuel rich solid propellants were investigated. The results showed that the BHN samples and fuel rich propellants containing BHN particles can be prepared successfully and solidified safely. The peak temperature of thermal decomposition and the heat of decomposition of the BHN samples prepared were 305.8 °C and 210.9 J•g-1 at a heating rate of 10 K•min-1, respectively. The burning rate and pressure exponent of fuel rich solid propellants decreases with increases in the fraction of BHN particles in the propellant formulation. Compared with the reference formulation (sample BP-1), the burning rate of the propellant with 10% mass fraction of BHN particles (sample BP-4) had decreased 30% at 3.0 MPa, and the pressure exponent had dropped from 0.44 to 0.41.

Opis:
The main advantages of modified double-base (MDB) propellants are wide range of burning rates, high energy output, as well as enhanced thrust. This study reports on the effect of potential oxidizers − potassium perchlorate (KP) or ammonium perchlorate (AP), stoichiometric binary mixture of the oxidizer (KP or AP) with metal fuel (Al), and energetic nitramine (HMX) on combustion characteristics of MDB propellants. MDB propellant formulations based on these additives, constituting 10 wt.% of total mass of the MDB formulation, were manufactured by solventless extrusion process. The impact of these additives on ballistic performance particularly the burning rate as well as on the characteristic exhaust velocity of gaseous product (C*), was evaluated using small-scale ballistic evaluation test motor. KP and AP exhibit different effects; KP positively impacts the burning rate, AP positively impacts C*. Stoichiometric binary mixture of AP/Al positively impacts both the burning rate and C*; HMX substantially enhances C*. These energetic additives could alter the combustion mechanism, by thinning the induction zone, allowing the luminous flame zone to be more adjacent to the burning surface. Therefore, the combustion reaction could proceed faster. The developed MDB propellant formulations were found to be more energetic with an increase in calorific value in comparison to reference formulation (using bomb calorimeter); they exhibited similar ignition temperature by means of cook off test. DSC measurements demonstrated similar onset and maximum decomposition temperature of developed MDB propellant formulations to reference DB propellant formulation but with an increase in total heat released (J/g).

Opis:
This work presents a new, non-invasive method for the discrete detection of combustion zone propagation in high energy materials – pyrotechnic compositions – by means of thermocouples bonded to the external, side surface of a pyrolytic graphite (pyrographite) tube filled with the pyrotechnic composition and ignited at the one end by a CO2 laser. The thermocouples were positioned in a line parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pyrographite tube, which was used as a directional heat guide (thermal management) and a thermoresistant structure, enabling detection of the propagation of the combustion zone as a heat zone generated by the combustion, traveling on the outside surface of the pyrographite tube along its axis. Such a directional heat guidance was caused by the unique thermal conductivity anisotropy of pyrographite resulting in low thermal conductivity of the pyrographite tube along its axis and high thermal conductivity across the tube radius. The thermocouples detected passages of the outside heat zone that were equally time delayed in relation to the combustion zone inside the tube. Dividing the distance between the thermocouples by the time between their thermoelectric response to the same (corresponding) isotherm of the heat zone, gave the average burning rate of the high energy composition being tested over the distance between the thermocouples. The proposed procedure for burning rate determination was verified by numerical simulations.

Opis:
The thermal decomposition and combustion of guanidinium 5,5’-azotetrazole salt (Gu2AzT) have been investigated. Temperature profiles in the Gu2AzT combustion wave were measured using thin tungsten-rhenium micro thermocouples. It was shown that combustion of the salt obeys the condensedphase mechanism. The high burning rate of Gu2AzT is connected with the high decomposition rate in the melt. The kinetic parameters of the controlling chemical reaction have been estimated, and a detailed combustion mechanism for Gu2AzT has been proposed.
