In order to extend the burning rate of boron-based, fuel-rich solid propellants with agglomerated boron powder, the effects of the boron content, the AP content, and of the magnesium powder content, on the burning rate and pressure exponent have been studied systematically. It has been shown that when the AP content is constant, the burning rate of the propellants increases with an increase in the agglomerated boron content. Furthermore, the burning rate and pressure exponent increase with increasing the contents of AP and magnesium powder. By means of single colour frame amplification photography and combustion wave tests, the combustion mechanism of these propellants has been investigated. It has been shown that the flame of the propellants becomes brighter by increasing the AP content, the dT/dxcp and dT/dxgp of the propellant FR-5 being around 6815 and 5789 °C/mm respectively, higher than those of FR-4, resulting in greater burning rates. The Ts of these propellants is above 683 °C, which is higher than the decomposition peak temperatures of agglomerated boron powder and of propellants (about 649 °C), which indicates that agglomerated boron powder is partially oxidized on the combustion surface, and the heat released from it may be beneficial to the combustion of the propellants.

Opis:
The solubility of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) in solvent and solvent-antisolvent mixtures, and the temperature at which the HNIW's polymorph transforms were studied. The solubility of HNIW in solvent-antisolvent mixtures was measured at 30 C and these data were fitted to a generalized solubility curve. Recrystallization experiments were conducted at 30 C in the case of saturation with the volume ratio of ethyl acetate to petroleum ether (chloroform) ranging from 0:1 to 4:1. Desensitized HNIW was obtained by ethyl acetate and petroleum ether crystallization and characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The FTIR and XRD spectra confirmed the structural features of ε-HNIW. The blocklike ε-HNIW grains had an average particle size of 160 ?m and high purity (98.52%). The decomposition of ε-HNIW was observed in the temperature range of 225-246 C by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore, the impact and friction sensitivity tests suggested that the desensitized ε-HNIW was less sensitive than raw HNIW. Small scale gap tests with desensitized ε-HNIW showed that these crystals are less sensitive to shock initiation.

The thermal decomposition characteristics of CL-20, potassium perchlorate (KP), lithium perchlorate (LP), a CL-20/KP mixture, and a CL-20/LP mixture were studied using thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The DSC curves for KP exhibited three endothermic peaks and one exothermic peak. The first two endothermic peaks correspond to the rhombic-cubic transition and the fusion of KP, respectively, the third indicates the fusion of KCl, while the exothermic peak is attributed to the decomposition of KP. The DSC curves obtained from LP showed four endothermic peaks and one exothermic peak. The first two endothermic peaks indicate the loss of adsorbed water and water of crystallization, while the third and fourth are associated with the fusion of LP and LiCl, respectively; the exothermic peak is due to the decomposition of LP. The presence of KP had little effect on the thermal decomposition of CL-20 while the addition of LP increased the temperature at which CL-20 exhibits an exothermic peak. In addition, the thermal decomposition of LP appeared to be catalyzed by the presence of CL-20.

In order to explore the polymorphic transition law for ε-CL-20 in composite systems, the polymorphic transition process of pure ε-CL-20 crystals stimulated by heat was investigated by the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) method, and the kinetic parameters of the polymorphic transition process were calculated (including the apparent activation energy Ea and the pre-exponential factor lnA). Meanwhile the effects of different additives on the polymorphic transition process and kinetics of ε-CL-20 were explored in detail. The experimental results showed that the ε-form tends to transform into the γ- form on heating and that the Ea and lnA for the transition process were 209.97 kJ/mol and 57.47, respectively. The first group of additives clearly promoted the polymorphic transition of ε-CL-20 and lowered the initial transition temperature and the activation energy. The second and third groups of additives inhibited the polymorphic transition of ε-CL-20 and raised the initial transition temperature and the activation energy.

Opis:
Traditional emulsion explosives, in spite of excellent water resistance, safe handling and good storage performance, have low power problems which seriously hinders their use. In order to improve the power of emulsion explosives, a hydrogen based emulsion explosive was devised. Scanning electron microscope pictures and experimental storage results show that the coating effect and stability of coated magnesium hydride (MgH2) are very good. The power of an emulsion explosive sensitized by glass microballoons was significantly increased (24.30 mm compression of lead block) after adding coated MgH2, compared to only 16.10 mm compression when not added. Thus emulsion explosives with coated MgH2 as an energetic additive have many potential applications.
