Opis:
The positive influence of horticultural therapy on the psychophysical status of human health has been noticed and already appreciated in the USA, Europe and the Pacific region, such as Japan, Taiwan, Australia or Korea. As part of horticultural therapy, a patient with a specific physical or mental problem gets to perform specifically selected tasks that are designed to help him cope with dysfunction and improve health condition. Horticultural therapy is usually an element of exercise therapy, sensory therapy or physical rehabilitation. This article describes the most important aspects of horticultural therapy.

Opis:
Poverty is the major restraint of people to modern medicine in the developing world. This brought about therapeutic usage of medicinal plants which can be traced back to history as different cultures utilize plants and plant products from ancient time for preventing and treating of diseases. These People in the developing countries or rural areas solely depend on traditional medicine for their primary health care, in which they majorly use plants or their active principles. Upsurge resistance of avian viruses to commercial drugs is both developed and developing countries problem which imposed a search for new avian antiviral substances from other sources like medicinal plants. This led to the discovery of Cucumis metuliferus E. Mey. ex Naudin fruit which has been verified by local farmers and scientific researchers to cure various diseases and conditions including avian viruses like Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV), avian influenza and Hepatitis B Virus. This review is aimed at revealing the avian virus diseases that are treated with the Cucumis metuliferus E. Mey. ex Naudin, fruit and phytochemical constituents responsible for this antiviral activities.

Three species from the genus Agrimonia occur in Poland: Agrimonia eupatoria L., Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb., and Agrimonia procera Wallr. Agrimonia eupatoria is a native plant growing commonly in meadow, scrub, and ruderal communities in lowland areas and in lower montane zones. A. eupatoria species have been classified as edible, cosmetic, and medicinal plants. Herba Agrimoniae is a medicinal raw material from A. eupatoria L. It is a source of many biologically active compounds, mainly flavonoids, tannins, proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins. A. eupatoria herb is characterised by varied contents of groups of biologically active compounds. The A. eupatoria bioactive compounds exhibit antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and antioxidant activity. This rich source of health-enhancing substances is used in treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal system and bile ducts as well as inflammatory diseases of the skin. With their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, A. eupatoria infusions are used to alleviate throat diseases and are recommended to occupational voice users.

Opis:
Telomeres are the specialized nucleoprotein structures associated with eukaryotic chromosomal ends, which are essential for maintaining the stability of the linear eukaryotic chromosomes. Progressive telomere shortening is an inevitable occurrence in normal somatic cells due to the end-replication problem leading to limited replication efficiency. The hallmark characteristics of human cancer cells include infinite reproductive potential, uncontrolled proliferation and immortality. These abilities of transformed cancerous cells are mainly due to the maintenance of their telomeres since degradation of chromosomal telomeric ends leads to cellular senescence or death. Thus telomere biology is important in the study of human cancer development. The mechanism by virtue the cancer cells are able to divide indefinitely is by maintaining telomeres. Activity of telomerase, a telomere-elongating ribonucleoprotein reverse transcriptase enzyme, is responsible for inducing the property of immortality to cancer cells. In humans nearly about 80% to 90% cancer cells activate telomerase and elongate their telomeres to overcome the end-replication problem. Telomere shortening suppresses cancer formation in contrast according to certain reports it sometimes promotes genomic instability which leads to enhancement of carcinogenesis and consequently the development of malignancy. Majority of cancer cells activate telomerase, but it remains mysterious as to find the reasons of the fact that certain cancer cells often show shorter telomeres in comparison to the cells in the surrounding normal tissues. This controversial role of telomerase associated with certain transformed cells leading to the cancerous state in relation to its role in normal cells is an interesting field to study which points out to the fact of development of cancer cells targeting drugs based on telomerase activities as an alternative weapon in combating against this dreaded human disease. The present review focuses on the activity of telomerase in telomere maintenance in the development of cancerous cells in humans, the use of telomerase as an assay technique for cancer detection as well as the anti-cancer therapeutic approach of targeting the telomerase in the current era of treatment of human cancer.
