Opis:
This work was aimed at investigating the metal contents of ashed and unashed shell powders of snail (Achatina fulica). The snails were collected and treated according to the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM D482-91). Potassium (K), Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Zinc (Zn) and Iron (Fe) in the ashed and unashed snail shell powder was determined. The result showed that the concentration of the metals in the unashed snail shell powder was higher than that of the ashed powder. The differences in the concentration of the metals was linked to the effect of ashing on the formation of silicates of the metals at high temperature (800 °C). At very high temperature, Ca (in the form of calcium carbonate) had very high concentration in both the ashed and unashed snail shell powder. This indicates that snail shell powder can be used as filler in paper industry to improve the paper opacity, or in the cosmetic industry as face powder.

Opis:
The potential ecological risk index (RI) was employed to evaluate water quality and sediment pollution of heavy metals in the fish Town Rivers, Nigeria. The propensity of the presence of the heavy metals residue in a common brackish water snail (Pachymelania byronensis) that serves as food for human was also examined. Fine-grained surficial sediments from natural depositional zones were collected using Ekman dredge, pooled together and analyzed for the present of heavy metals. The snail samples were randomly hand-picked from the edge of the Rivers or attached to the substrata from August, 2017 to January, 2018 depicting wet season (August - October) and dry season (November - January). A total of 144 P. byronensis (24 per station) were sampled for this investigation. The concentrations of the heavy metals concentration in the sediments and snail tissues were analyzed using graphite furnace absorption spectrometry. The order of occurrence of the metal in the snail is Zn > Cu > Fe > Pb > Cd and their levels remain within their permissible safe levels for human consumption as stipulated by the various regulatory bodies. The risk factor for the metals in the sediments revealed that the Rivers is moderately at risk, which may not pose serious environmental threat and health risks to the resident organisms, but may be magnify along the trophic level. Therefore, sensitization of the inhabitants becomes inevitable, since the level is at threshold, above which may be detrimental.

Opis:
Natural clay has been considered as a potential absorbent for removing pollutants from water and waste water. Nonetheless, the effective application of clay for water treatment is limited due to small surface area and presence of net negative surface charge, leading to it low adsorption capacity. The absorption capacity was boosted via intercalation of CaO derived from snail shell (SS). The methylene blue sorption potential, PZC, and the surface area of unmodified clay sample were substantially enhanced by the intercalation process. The process of sorption of MB from solution was analyzed using five different isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Harkins-Jura, and Halsey isotherm equations). The value of the Langmuir monolayer sorption capacity qm (mg/g) increased from 50.12 to 88.71, PZC values increased from 4.50 to 7.40, and the surface area (m2/g) value increased from 27 m2/g to 123 m2/g after the intercalation process. The experimental data were fitted into two kinetic models: Lagergren pseudo-first order and the chemisorptions pseudo-second order. It was observed that chemisorptions pseudo-second order kinetic model described the sorption process with high coefficients of determination (r2) better than pseudo first other kinetic models. The modification caused no change in the clay surficial microstructure but increased the lattice spacing of the clay framework.

This paper describes the case of introduction of an exotic ornamental snail, Melanoides tuberculata (Thiaridae) in an artificial water reservoir in Pole Mokotowskie park complex in Warsaw, Poland. Observed individuals have been identified, described and presented in photographs. The basic physicochemical parameters of water were analyzed and prospects for the population were evaluated. Another second species of aquatic ornamental snail - Physa acuta (Physidae) was found in the same water reservoir. The observation was analyzed with available literature describing introductions of alien species of aquatic origin in Polish waters.

Opis:
The article presents the results of complex laboratory investigations on the biological and biomechanical ways of control of Melanoides tuberculata (Müller 1774) and Tarebia granifera (Lamarck, 1822) molluscs in simulated conditions close to the conditions of the cooling pond of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. It was determined that molluscs have naturalized in the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant cooling pond, quickly increased their number and created a threat to hydraulic structures. Taking into account biological features of Thiaridae mollusks and technical and ecological features of Zaporizhia NPP, we carried out a series of experiments using biological control measures (the use of predatory species of hydrobionts) and mechanical means for controlling mollusks. Representatives of different taxons of the Animalia Kingdom were selected as predatory species of hydrobionts, which potentially can consume gastropods: Mollusca, Crustaceans and Fish. It has been found experimentally that the use of marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis (Lyko, 2017), pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Botia lohachata Chaudhuri, 1912 has not given positive results in the development of measures to control the number of molluscs. Positive results were obtained in a series of experiments with predatory mollusc assassin snail Clea helena (von dem Busch, 1847), but it was noted that in the presence of more accessible feeds, assassin snail Clea helena (von dem Busch, 1847) consumes smaller quantities of Thiaridae mollusks. The most successful results we obtained in experiments with traps for molluscs. We have developed experimental constructions of traps with lower and upper inlets that act as mollusk accumulator and can be installed in the coastal zone of the reservoir and Zaporizhia NPP cooling system channels for reducing the number of reproductive individuals of Melanoides tuberculata (Müller 1774) and Tarebia granifera (Lamarck, 1822). The most effective were the traps with the lower inlet to which the mollusks could get faster. In order to attract mollusks to traps, we have conducted studies on the use of feed baits for molluscs. Most effectively, molluscs fell into traps that contained lime feed, feedstock sunflower oil and anise oil. The most effective among mollusks was the bait with the addition of anise oil. During the exposure, traps with anise bait traps accumulated 14.1% of molluscs. The conducted researches can serve as the basis for the development of biomelioration measures aimed at reducing the negative impact of accidental introduction of new species of molluscs into technical reservoirs of strategic importance.
