Opis:
This study is based on the analysis of drinking water parameters in selected wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka. Unsafe drinking water is one of the main concerns in developing countries. In Sri Lanka, the drinking water quality is a major concern in many places. A series of studies have been conducted in intensive agricultural production areas, namely, Jaffna, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Kurunagala and Hambantota. This represents a longitudinal section of Sri Lanka, and the study was done to understand the groundwater quality over the years of 2004 to 2009. Water from selected areas were sampled throughout the villages of this area mostly from open wells and tube wells. The samples were analysed for their chemical quality in order to identify water quality as compared with the Sri Lankan Drinking water standard. For this study, Sodium (Na+), Calcium (Ca2+), Magnesium (Mg2+), Chloride (Clˉ), Sulphate (SO42ˉ) and Nitrate (NO3ˉ) were analysed. Accordingly, in the Dry Zone, the concentration of the Ca, Mg and Cl are higher than in the Wet Zones. Indeed, some sampling wells in the Dry Zones have extreme concentration of Ca (more than 1000 mg/l) and this is a major threat to the consumers for drinking purposes. In total, of 103 wells, 6 percent of the sampling wells were identified as contaminated, whereas in total, of 96 wells in the Dry Zone, 64 percent of the sampling wells were found to be contaminated due to chemical concentration. We found that rural areas are facing agrochemical-leaching problems into the groundwater, whereas urban areas are facing industrial and biological materials seeping into the ground and surface water bodies.

An analytical study of thermal explosion on Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid is carried out. Approximate solutions to the governing equations and analysis of the study in the Newtonian case, showed that an increase in Frank-Kamenestkii parameter and that of the Semenov parameter decreases the minimum temperature of the reacting fluid thereby delaying the initiation of thermal explosions while additional heat source brings about early initiation of thermal explosions. The same observation was deduced in the non-Newtonian case but in varying degrees.

Opis:
Electrical resistivity investigation was carried out at Ibeju Lekki, Southwestern Nigeria. The thrust of this study is to determine the geoelectrical parameters of the shallow aquifer and estimate the hydraulic characteristics of this aquifer unit from the surface geophysics. The area falls within the Dahomey basin of the Nigeria sedimentary terrain. Twenty-one VES were conducted using Shlumberger array with a maximum half current electrode (AB/2) of 100 m giving total spread of 200 m. Data were interpreted using partial curve matching technique and assisted 1-D forward modeling with WINRESIST software. The qualitative interpretation revealed KQ curves (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 > ρ4) and KH curve (ρ1 < ρ2 > ρ3 < ρ4). The geoelectric section generated from the results of the VES revealed a four geo-electric layers; these include topsoil with resistivity ranging from 213-5404 Ωm, dry sand with resistivity values vary from 301to 17178 Ωm, saturated sand with resistivity varying from 110 to1724 Ωm and sand (saline water content) with resistivity values of between 8 and 97 Ωm. The major aquifer in the area occurs at the third geoelectric layer. The depth to this aquifer is of between 0.7m and 6.0m and the layer thickness is between 0.2 m and 19.9 m. The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer estimated from the geoelectric parameters reveal that the aquifer has porosity values of between 29.4 % and 57.7 %, protective capacities of between 0.00013 and 0.015 mhos, transverse resistance ranges from 345-18502 Ωm2, transmissivity values vary from 13 to 310 m2/day and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 0.8-65 m/day. The results show that the aquifer is characterized by high porosity and low protective capacities of overburden layers indicating that it is highly vulnerable to surface contamination. It has high transverse resistance, high transmissivity, and high hydraulic conductivity indicating that the aquifer can transmit water at higher rate and sustain the need of the community. This study has demonstrated the efficacy of surface geophysics in estimating hydraulic characteristics of an aquifer where pumping test data are not available and also to determine its vulnerability to surface contaminants.

Using the analogy between anisotropic acoustic metamaterials with magnetic metamaterials in transverse magnetic mode, an electromagnetic wave of 2 GHz n transverse magnetic mode, at normal incidence propagating through a two dimensional, anisotropic, semi infinite, double negative, metamaterial slab of 800 × 800 cells, embedded in free space, for the ideal loss case was simulated by a radially dependent finite difference time dependent method to study an ideal acoustic cylindrical cloak. For the simulations multiple cycle m-n-m pulses generating Gaussian beams were used as sinusoidal hard line sources. The simulations for acoustic cylindrical cloaking by a reduced parameter model and a higher order parameter model are also presented. The cloaking behaviour is largely dependent upon the transformation and not on the thickness of the cloak. The radial dependent model and the higher order transformation model are suited for acoustic cloaking.

This paper deals with free vibration modes and natural frequencies of a thin visco-elastic, non-homogeneous rectangular plate with clamped ends. First two modes of frequency parameter of vibration are derived on the basis of Rayleigh-Ritz technique. Since the effect of temperature decreases the efficiency and durability of the structure, influence of bi-parabolic temperature variations on vibration of rectangular plate is analyzed. Tapering in rectangular plate is assumed bi-exponentially in x-and y-direction. Effect of non-homogeneity is discussed with exponential variation in density of the plate’s material i.e. visco-elastic material “Duralium” which is an alloy of aluminum. Vibration modes of clamped plate are calculated for various values of thermal gradient, taper parameters and non-homogeneity constant. Results are explained with the help of the graphs.

Opis:
The phytoplankton abundance and physico-chemical parameters of Ifewara Reservoir, Southwestern Nigeria was studied for four months (February to December, 2015). Four sampling stations (designated Stations 1-4) were established along the horizontal axis of the reservoir - from inflow region to the dam site end. At each station, net plankton samples were collected by sieving 30 litres of water through a plankton net of 50 µm mesh size into 30 ml concentrate volume. These were then preserved in 5% formalin solution and later treated with Lugol’s solution and reduced to 3 ml for microscope observation. The results of the physico-chemical parameters showed that some were above recommended limits of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agencies (NESREA) for drinking water and aquatic life. Sixty-nine (69) species of phytoplankton were recorded from the four investigated sampling stations. The abundance of phytoplankton was in the following order; Bacillariophyceae (90.84%) > Chlorophyceae (44.67%) > Cyanophyceae (10.69%) > Charophyceae (0.31%) > Euglenophyceae (0.12%) > Dinophyceae (0.06%) > Chrysophyceae (0.03%). The most abundant phytoplankton species was Fragilaria aceania, accounting for 74.28% of the total, followed by Cosmarium quadrum (13.04%), Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum (11.97%) and Oscillatoria tenuis (8.03%). With regard to the horizontal pattern of variation along the reservoir, the highest phytoplankton abundance was recorded at the inflow basin and the lowest abundance at the dam site. Almost all the phytoplankton groups also had their highest mean abundance during the rainy season rather then during the dry season.

Water Quality index indicating the water quality in terms of index number, offers a useful representation of overall quality of water for public or for any intended use, as well as in pollution abatement programmes and in water quality management. The present study was carried out to determine the Water Quality Index (WQI) of selected rivers in Warri, Delta State, using fourteen physicochemical parameters and on the basis of weighted Arithmetic Index in order to access the suitability of this water for consumption, recreation and other purposes. The parameters were measured monthly for one year at the six selected water bodies. In this study, WQI was determined by the analysis-on the basis of various physicochemical parameters such as pH, chlorides, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solid, total suspended solids, chlorides, sulphates, chemical oxygen demand, oil/grease. Result obtained for the different sampling sites were found to fall within the WQI classifications - poor water (100-200) to unsuitable water or unfit (>300). There is, therefore, the need to periodically assess these water bodies to ensure the quality is suitable for the intended purpose.

Opis:
Rainfall is an important climatic parameter. The study examined the nature of trend in annual rainfall amount and rainfall attributes such as onset, cessation dates and hydrological growing season. This study was carried out to determine if there was any significant change in rainfall in the study area. Walter’s 1967 formula was used to determine the onset, cessation and hydrological growing season. The results obtained were then subjected to a time-series analysis. The findings showed that annual rainfall in Sokoto from 1987 to 2016 is on the increase, Onset dates showed early onset of recent. The rains stopped late thereby increasing the hydrological growing season. The latest onset date occurred on 4th July in the years 1995 and 2016 and the earliest onset date on 12th April in the year 2015. The earliest cessation date was recorded on 22nd August in the year 1987 and the latest on 18th October in the years 2009 and 2010. The Hydrological growing season was longest (162 days) in 2015, this was seen to be a result of the onset dates of rainfall occurring earlier and cessation dates later. Despite the upward trend rainfall is variable and unreliable and insufficient to meet the water needs of the plants, and this has a great implication resulting in cases of seasonal drought occurrences and reduced agricultural yield. The government policies as related to agriculture and water resources development should be based on recent rainfall parameters.

Nigeria has relied for several decades on the importation of tallow fat for her industries despite its inconsistency in availability and price in the market The above challenges and the recent soaring value of Dollars to Naira have made it highly necessary for Nigeria to consider the quantum of about 9 tonnes/day of tallow fat sent down the drain in each Nigerian slaughterhouse. Therefore, this research work has investigated the Physico-chemical quality of Nigerian beef tallow fat obtained by wet rendering of slaughterhouse waste from Obosi in Anambra State of Nigeria. It was analyzed using AOAC procedures (1990, 1993). The slaughter waste gave 15% yield of tallow fat with 199.5 mg/gkOH, 0.40%, 2.05% of saponification value, unsaponifable matter and Free Fatty Acid (FFA), respectively. The Gas Chromatography (GC) revealed the following fatty acids: 46.65% stearic acid, followed by 41.33% palmitic acid and 9.0% oleic acid. The results were found to be agreement with ISO and CODEX-STAN 211(1999) standards. To this end, the quality and usefulness of Nigerian beef tallow has been validated. Hence, investment in this area would help reposition Nigerian slaughterhouse waste matter control strategy, economy and industry.

The primary physical and chemical parameters that define the hypopolarized plasma cell membrane of malignant (cancer) cells compared to non-malignant cells reflect universal characteristics. The median value for the resting membrane potential is the constant for the Nernst equation without reference to discrepancies in ion concentrations and is identical to Boltzmann energies at 37 °C. The threshold energy defining space-time converges with access to entropic processes that are reflected in the morphology of cancer cells and tumors. Slowing of growth in cancer cell lines but not normal cells following exposure to weak (~1 to 10 μT) patterned magnetic fields occurs when the energy induced within the cell corresponds to the energy equivalent of the hypopolarized membrane potential. The optimal temporal parameters for the efficacy of these fields can be derived from Hubble‟s parameter and the transform function for “noise” or “random” patterns within the system. Quantitative solutions and experimental data indicate that the cancer cell may be dominated by entropic process that can be attenuated or blocked by temporally-structured applied magnetic fields whose intensity matches the increment of energy associated with this threshold.
