Opis:
This study investigated characterization of Epiphyllum oxypetalum (EO) leaf extracts and optimization of process variables on inhibition of mild-steel in 3 M H2SO4 aggressive environment. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to examine the influence of process variables namely acid concentration (1.0 – 3.0 mols), inhibitor concentration (0.2 – 1.0 g/l), time (1–10 hr) and temperature (303 -343K) on inhibition efficiency. The results of phytochemical screening showed that organic components present in EO extract as a good inhibitor. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies established the presence of active compounds and adsorption of leaf extracts on metal surface. The experimental data was statistically analyzed and regression equations for corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency generated. The optimum conditions were achieved at acid concentration of 1.00 mol, inhibitor concentration of 0.055 g/l temperature of 333K, and time of 2.750 hr. The optimization results revealed that inhibition efficiency of 82.93 % was obtained at optimum combination of the extract concentration, the acid concentration, the temperature and the immersion time. The inhibitive potentials of EO extract was found to impede the localized and uniform corrosion of mild steel in acidic media, showing that the Epiphyllum oxypetalum leaf extract is a good inhibitor for mild steel in acidic solutions.

Brass Corrosion Inhibitors

Opis:
Brass as an alloy composed mainly of copper is great industrial uses such as heat exchangers and similar other facility due to its good thermal properties. Due to the presence of the considerable ratio of zinc the alloy suffers from zinc dissolution or dezincification. Dezincification rate increases with the increase in the ratio of zinc in the alloy. In this study benzothiazole (BTH) and its substituent’s 2-methylbenzothiazole (MeBTH), 2-aminobenzothiazole (ABTH), 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBTH) and 2-phenylbenzothiazole (PhBTH) have been used as corrosion inhibitors for α-brass in stirred 0.1 M HClO4. The methods of investigation include weight loss, Tafel and linear polarizations and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The order of inhibition efficiency (% E) was calculated and the values obtained has indicated the sequence of inhibition efficiency was found to be BTH < MeBTH < ABTH < PhBTH < MBTH. The calculated values of thermodynamic parameters support this order. The inhibitors were found to suppress the corrosion rate by the formation of films which were identified by IR, SEM and EDAX techniques.

Opis:
Chemical (weight loss and thermometric) measurements were used to study the corrosion inhibition characteristics of five seed shells, namely Afzelia africana seed shell (AASS), Brachystegia eurycoma seed shell (BESS), Derium microcarpum seed shell (DMSS), Mucuna flagellipes seed shell (MFSS) and Pentaclethra macrophlla seed shell (PMSS), respectively, on the inhibition of aluminum corrosion in aggressive 2.0 % HCl solutions at 30 and 50 °C for 8 hrs. Weight loss and thermometric measurements demonstrated that the seed shells (AASS, BESS, DMSS, MFSS and PMSS extracts) act as good corrosion inhibitors. Addition of the seed shell extracts decreases the corrosion rate of the process thereby improving inhibition performance. The result also reveals that the five seed shell extracts adsorb on the Aluminum surface through physical adsorption in accordance with Flory-Huggins and Langmuir adsorption isotherms at all temperatures investigated. Kinetic-thermodynamic parameters indicate a spontaneous adsorption process. Results of inhibition efficiency demonstrates that DMSS extract performed better as compared to BESS, AASS, PMSS and MFSS extracts.
