Opis:
Three profiles were sited on the major landscape elements of crest, middle slope and lower slope on three land uses; Forest (FS), Rubber (RS) and arable cropping (AS) at Agoi-Ibami in Central Cross River State, Nigeria. For study purposes, soil samples were collected from the morphogenetic horizons for the analysis of physical and chemical properties. Results showed that the surface horizon textures were mostly sandy loams with little sandy clay loam, while subsurface textures were mostly sandy clay loams with few silt clay loams and clays. The bulk densities were below the ranges of 1.46 to 1.63 g cm-3 for silts and clays and 1.75 g cm-3 for sands. This imposes stresses such as mechanical resistance to root penetration, decrease in cultivation and organic matter. The surface and subsurface pH values vary from 4.9–4.5 in FS, 4.9-4.6 in RS and 4.9 in AS, indicating that the soils are very strongly acidic. The Organic carbon contents was low with mean values of 4.33 and 0.6 % in surface and subsurface for FS, 2.10 and 0.50 % for surface and subsurface for RS, while surface and subsurface values proved to be 0.57 and 0.31 % for AS. The nitrogen contents was also low, mean values of 0.16 and 0.06 % for surface and subsurface for FS, 0.23 and 0.08 % for surface and subsurface for RS, and 0.19 and 0.10 % for surface and subsurface for AS. The content and available phosphorus are equally low, except for AS, with surface mean values ranging from 11.52 mg kg-1 to 13.87 mg kg-1. The exchangeable cations, Ca, Mg, K, and Na were very low, while exchangeable H+ and Al3+ were high. Base saturation was also low in FS and AS (< 50%) in surface soils, but higher in AS in the surface and in RS in the subsurface soils. The mean values of organic matter were 4.33 and 0.16 %. The land use should, therefore, be adjusted by application of recommended inorganic fertilizers and organic matter so as to support growth of crops such as maize, yams, cassava etc.

Five composite samples of waste water were collected from waste water tank of a vegetable oil refining company and were analyzed for physiochemical characteristics, heavy metal and organic pollutants. Physicochemical determinations were done according to standard methods; heavy metals were determined by use of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer method while organic pollutants were determined by Gas chromatography system HP 6890 series. Sulphate was determined by vanadomolybdophosphoric acid method while phosphates and chlorides were determined by argentometric method. Results reveal that effluent pH (4.67 ±0.015), salinity (125 ±4.50 %) and BOD5 (17.83 ±1.70 mg/l) were bellow WHO standard whereas TDS (127.7 ±5.77 mg/l), TSS (563.6 ±3.15 mg/l) and COD (3959 ±3.8 mg/l) were above WHO standards. Heavy metal pollution index (0.31) showed no multi-element contamination arising from effluent. The degree of contamination (1.84) showed that the effluent has a moderate polluting potential. Lower molecular weight PAHs showed a significant difference even though most of the organic compounds in vegetable oil refinery wastewater showed good biodegradability that varied weekly. Therefore there is either no treatment or an in effective treatment of the effluents. This could result to serious environmental problems in the near future.

Concentration of seven (7) metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Mu, Ni, Cr, and Cd) in the samples of soil and some plant species collected from Kachia military shooting range were determined. The mineral ions were assayed using the acid digestion method and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Physicochemical parameters (pH, EC, Bulk density, water holding capacity and Total Nitrogen) of the soil samples were also determined. Of the 7 metals determined in the soils samples, the concentration of Pb (14.85 ± 6.78 mg/kg-1) was the highest compared to the concentrations of other metals. Physicochemical parameters were within the range that allows effective phytoremediation. Cu showed the lowest concentration (0.55 ± 1.68 mg/kg-1). Ni was below the detectable limit in most of the samples. Similarly, concentrations of Pb (12.30 mg/kg-1) in the shoot of Albizia zygia among other metals were higher than those of the other metals in the plant tissues. Concentration of Cd (0.07 mg/kg-1) in the root of Eragotis tremula was the lowest. Generally, metal ion concentration in the soil and plant samples of the shooting range (polluted site) significantly) differed from those of the non-polluted site (P<0.05). Combretum hispidium among the plant species had the highest translocation factor (TF = 2.91). Although the TF was higher in the plant of the polluted site TF >1), reasonable amount of them were retained within the underground tissues (roots).

Water Quality index indicating the water quality in terms of index number, offers a useful representation of overall quality of water for public or for any intended use, as well as in pollution abatement programmes and in water quality management. The present study was carried out to determine the Water Quality Index (WQI) of selected rivers in Warri, Delta State, using fourteen physicochemical parameters and on the basis of weighted Arithmetic Index in order to access the suitability of this water for consumption, recreation and other purposes. The parameters were measured monthly for one year at the six selected water bodies. In this study, WQI was determined by the analysis-on the basis of various physicochemical parameters such as pH, chlorides, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solid, total suspended solids, chlorides, sulphates, chemical oxygen demand, oil/grease. Result obtained for the different sampling sites were found to fall within the WQI classifications - poor water (100-200) to unsuitable water or unfit (>300). There is, therefore, the need to periodically assess these water bodies to ensure the quality is suitable for the intended purpose.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of acid whey as a starter culture on selected physicochemical properties of fermented pork sausage after ripening (21 days). Four variants of the product have been produced. The first variant (PKS) - cured sausage (2.8%) with starter cultures. Second variant (SSK) – salted sausage (2.8%) with acid whey (5%). Third variant (SKS) – salted sausage (2.8%) with starter cultures. In the fourth variant (PSK), sea salt (2.8%) and acid whey (5%) were used. The research included determination of pH value, water activity, TBARS indicator, analysis of total content of haem pigments and heme iron, determination of color parameters by CIE L * a * b * system and analysis of sausage texture parameters (TPA). The pH values of sausages with acid whey were significantly lower compared to fermented sausages with starter cultures. The highest TBARS index was observed in the SSK (0.612 mg MDA / kg), and the lowest in the PKS sample (0.118 mg MDA / kg). The highest overall content of heme dyes and heme iron was recorded in the PSK test. A higher share of redness was observed in the general tone of color in cured sausages (PKS, PSK) by about 1-2 units compared to salted samples (SSK, SKS). In case of texture, significantly higher values of the hardness parameter were observed in the PSK test as compared to the remaining test samples. Based on the tests, it has been found that it is possible to use acid whey as a starter culture in fermented pork sausage. However, the best results were obtained in the curing sample with acid whey (PSK).

The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of sediments samples collected along the Mahim Creek of Mumbai. The annual average pH value of the creek sediments was recorded as 9.22. It is feared that such conditions may increase the alkalinity of Creek water which according to USEPA will increase the physiological stress of many aquatic species resulting in decreased reproduction, decreased growth, disease, or death thereby reducing the biological diversity of the Creek. The total organic matter in the creek sediments was found to be maximum of 10.30 % with an annual average concentration of 6.29 %. Although organic matter is a primary source of food for benthic organisms and is important in maintaining a viable ecosystem, too much of organic matter deposited in the sediments will be responsible for depletion in dissolved oxygen content of the creek water causing unpleasant odours and may also increase the rate of eutrophication. From the results it appears that as India moves towards stricter regulation of industrial effluents to control water pollution, greater efforts are required to control the discharge of pollutants into the ecosystems.

The present study was performed for the period of one year from January 2013 to December 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of sediments samples collected along the Mahul Creek of Mumbai. The annual average pH value of the creek sediments was recorded as 5.38. It is feared that such low pH value of sediment might increase the acidity of creek water thereby triggering the heavy metal toxicity which will further reduced survivorship in fish through chronic stress and affect the reproductive partner. The annual average salinity content of the sediment was recorded as 4601.17 ppm. It is important here to note that the high salinity of the sediment may increase the salinity level of creek water which is considered as a major stress factor for most freshwater organisms including crustaceans. The average annual concentration of phosphate in the creek sediment was found to 480.39 ppm. Such high concentration of phosphate in the creek sediments might accelerate the process of eutrophication. From the results it appears that as India moves towards stricter regulation of industrial effluents to control water pollution, greater efforts are required to reduce the risk due to the toxic pollutants which are released into the ecosystems.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of Citrullus lanatus seeds (a natural coagulant) also known as Watermelon seeds in treating Yamuna River Water. The problem of water scarcity in developing nations requires an economical and feasible water treatment process like coagulation. The watermelon seeds were analyzed on different physicochemical water treatment parameters. To understand the efficiency of the coagulant; a jar test was conducted by varying dosage, mixing speed, pH, and temperature. At an optimum coagulant dosage of 250 mg/L, pH of 7, stirring speed of 100 rpm, and temperature of 30 °C, the maximum turbidity removal of 81% was observed. The study concludes that the Citrullus lanatus seeds can be used as an effective natural coagulant for water treatment in developing countries.
