Opis:
Staphylococcus aureus is a very important human pathogen that generates a number of human infections. Isolation of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) was carried out from wound samples of patients attending University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. A total of 45 wound samples from 15 patients were collected aseptically in triplicate, using sterile cotton swabs moistened in sterile normal saline. Microbiological analysis and susceptibility to vancomycin, including minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MIC and MBC), were carried out using standard methodologies. A total of 15 isolates were obtained and these showed varying MIC and MBC patterns. Out of the 15 S. aureus isolated, only one isolate had an MIC of approximately 4 µg/ml, while twelve isolates gave MIC values that ranged from 15.62 µg/ml to 250 µg/ml. The remaining 2 isolates gave MIC values that were ≥ 500 µg/ml. These 2 isolates exhibited alpha haemolysis on blood agar, unlike the others that were beta haemolytic. The results of the MBC also showed variations amongst the isolates. A total of 10 isolates gave MBC values that ranged from 62.5 µg/ml to 500 µg/ml, while the remaining 5 isolates gave MBC values that were ≥ 500 µg/ml. The high MIC and MBC values obtained showed that vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is increasing at an alarming rate, and this accounts for the gradual decline in the effectiveness associated with the use of vancomycin. Given the widespread prevalence of VRSA, there is a need for newer therapeutics that can reverse this surge.

With advances in next generation sequencing and microscopy, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge about the predatory properties of Bdellovibrio and like organisms (BALOs). BALOs are Gram negative microorganisms which are natural predators of other Gram-negative microorganisms, especially those associated with diseases in humans and animals. One of the limitations of BALOs is their inability to prey upon Gram-positive organisms that cause the bulk of human diseases. The global spread of antibiotics resistance to almost every group of antibiotics, and the paucity of newer antibiotics since 1970s is very worrisome. The ability of BALOs to decimate pathogen populations principally those carrying multidrug résistance genes coupled with the increasing rate of antibiotics resistance, has made them an attractive option as biocontrol agents. With the absence of resistance to BALOs, these much anticipated “magic bullets” will certainly find more and more applications in health, agriculture, medicine and environment in the nearest future.

In recent years, insilico approaches have been predicting novel drug targets. The present day development in pharmaceutics mainly ponders on target based drugs and this has been aided by structure based drug designing and subtractive genomics. In the present study, the computational genome subtraction methodology was applied for identification of novel, potential drug target against Bacillus anthracis, cause of deadly anthrax. The potential drug target identified through subtractive genomics approach was considered as polysaccharide deacetylase. By virtual screening against NCI database and Drugbank chemical libraries, two potential lead molecules were predicted. Further the potential lead molecules and target protein were subjected for docking studies using Autodock.

Dermatophytic infection is a common infection that constitutes public health problem among children. Anti dermatophytic activity of aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic extracts of garlic (Allium sativum) was investigated against isolates of dermatophytic fungi obtained from sixty primary school children in Aba. The well in agar diffusion technique was used to determine the sensitivity patterns of the test organisms. The results were compared with the activity of a known antifungal drug nystatin. The isolates included Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton verrucosum and Epidermophyton floccosum. The result of the antifungal activity of garlic showed high but varied levels of antifungal effectiveness on the different species of the dermatophytes at four different concentrations of 12.5 %, 25 %, 50 % and 100 % used. T. rubrum was the most susceptible followed by M. gypseum, T. mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum and E. floccosum respectivey. The diameter zones of inhibition exhibited by the extracts against test fungal species ranged between 4.50 mm and 30.67 mm. Further purification and extraction of active principle of garlic would give an antidermatophytic activity comparable to standard antifungal drugs.

To explore the boundary between quantum and classical physics in the context of quantum entanglement, the particle localization via measurement induced entanglement on photons incident onto a distinguishable, massive non-interacting two-particle system was studied. The specific case of how particles acquire well defined spatial localization when light is scattered off and detected was considered. The localization process studied both qualitatively and quantitatively was observed to be valid for particles which were initially localized as well as initially completely delocalized. The localization scheme was also observed to be extremely sensitive to its initial conditions. Furthermore, a difference in the localization scheme in terms of the number of scattering events was observed between monochromatic photons and photons with variable frequencies. From all these results it was apparent that we can interpret the uniquely quantum features of entanglement in terms of classicality.

The position of the phase transition in the two dimensional Ising model were determined by using Monte Carlo simulation in a quadratic for area of variable length with external magnetic field switched off (B = 0). The magnetization per site , magnetic susceptibility of a ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials were calculated as a function of temperature for , spin lattice interactions. Nearest neighbor interaction is assumed (i.e. each spin has 4 neighbors); uses periodic boundary conditions. The Curie temperature is determined by measuring the magnetic susceptibility at which the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic undergoes a phase change from order to disorder. There is thus a phase transition defined by the Curie temperature. The Monte Carlo method were used to check these results and to confirm the phase transition. The data are analyzed using the Curie-Weiss law which contains the Curie temperature as a parameter.

Treating the laser medium quantum mechanically and the laser electric field classically, a mathematical model was developed to study a laser field inside a single mode optical cavity by numerical and analytical techniques. The simulations for threshold population, population inversion and average population with electric field frequency for 500 kHz resonance frequency of the atom are presented. The gain coefficient and the pump parameter with the frequency of the cavity electric field for 1000 kHz resonance frequency of the atom were simulated. The threshold population is a minimum when the frequency of electric field is equal to the resonance frequency of the atom. The population inversion varies sinusoidal with time and the frequency of the electric field and is a maximum at the threshold frequency of the atom. The saturated laser intensity at steady state increases linearly with the pump parameter and for larger values of the pump parameter, a smaller time is needed to reach the saturation of the laser field.

The London and GL solution were exactly the same at the classical limit for NbN. Considering a Cooper pair as a complete classical particle, the momentum probability density was derived by using the Maxwell velocity distribution and the quantum mechanical momentum probability density was derived by using the radial wave function of the cooper pairs for Zn. The quantum mechanical and classical momentum probability densities overlap at zero momentum.

Opis:
The present work discusses the conceptual and technical issues encountered in formulating a quantized theory of gravity, via the reconciliation of quantum mechanics and general relativity. Quantum effects arising in a classically defined space-time derived through a semi classical approximation are studied at length and the significance of the particle interpretation in quantum field theory in the origin of such effects is established. The contradicting nature of the quantum effects against classically established principles is studied by considering the Hawking effect in a Schwarzschild black hole space-time. Further, the limits of prominent manifestation of the quantum effects with regards to the black hole mass is calculated taking into consideration the cosmic microwave background and the lifetime of the universe. Quantum effects are established as essential in incorporating thermal physics and black hole mechanics in a consistent formulation. Finally, the validity of the semi classical approximation is studied in terms of Planck scale black holes, transplanckian problem and the information loss paradox and the requirement for a fully quantized theory of gravity is realized.

A theoretical model was developed using GreenˇŚs function with an anisotropic elastic tensor to study the strain distribution in and around three dimensional semiconductor pyramidal quantum dots formed from group IV and III-V material systems namely, Ge on Si, InAs on GaAs and InP on AlP. A larger positive strain in normal direction which tends to zero beyond 6nm was observed for all three types while the strains parallel to the substrate were negative. For all the three types of quantum dots hydrostatic strain and biaxial strain along x and z directions were not linear but described a curve with a maximum positive value near the base of the quantum dot. The hydrostatic strain in x-direction is mostly confined within the quantum dot and practically goes to zero outside the edges of the quantum dot. For all the three types, the maximum hydrostatic and biaxial strains occur in x-direction around {1nm and around 2nm in z-direction. The negative strain in x-direction although realtively weak penetrate more deeper to the substrate than hydrostatic strain. The group IV substrate gave larger hydrostatic and biaxial strains than the group III-V semiconductor combinations and InAs /GaAs was the most stable. The results indicated that the movements of atoms due to the lattice mismatch were strong for group III-V.

We have shown that the Schrödinger wave equation can be explained and derived from fundamental postulates that are based on the conservation of probability, significance of measurements at infinity and nature’s tendency of maintaining a system as unbiased as possible. As a reasonable measure for the local randomness, Fisher information is considered. The presented approach provides an axiomatic derivation for the Schrödinger wave equation, avoiding imperfect models borrowed from classical mechanics such as direct application of the energy conservation, statistical mechanics or vibrating string models.
