Opis:
This study investigated those factors which influenced the adoption of Moringa olefera as water purifier by the farmers in Kaduna state. Data were collected with the aid of structured questionnaire from 30 respondents. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logit regression model. The results showed that the respondents had one form of education or the other. About 90 percent were married average household size of 10 persons per household. About 73 percent adopted Moringa oleifera water purification. Socio-economic factors influencing adoption of Moringa oleifera water purification were age, education, extension contact and membership of cooperative. The study therefore recommends that farmers should form themselves into association because such association will aid in collective soliciting for government assistance, NGOs and other funding agencies. Also, more awareness should be created by the extension agents on the importance of Moringa oleifera seed powder in rural development.

Opis:
A ten-week experiment using twenty four (24) weaner rabbits (Chinchila x New Zealand White) aged 8 to 9 weeks with an average initial body weight of 431.20+0.74g were randomly allocated to four treatment diets of T1(control), T2(5% NLM), T3(10% NLM) and T4(15% NLM) in a completely randomized design. They were fed for 10 weeks during which data on growth and haematology were collected and analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the average total body weight gains were 739.60g (T1), 717.85g (T2), 740.18g (T3) and 729.45g (T4).There was no significant difference (p>0.05) when T1 and T3 as well as T2 and T4 were compared but significant (p<0.05) when T1 and T2 as well as T3 and T4 were compared. Also the average weekly feed intake showed that T1, T2, T3 and T4 consumed 313.91g, 313.24g, 312.48g and 314.69g respectively. However, there was significant difference (p<0.05) when all the treatments were compared in this respect. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) showed that T3 (4.22) was the best followed by T1 (4.24), T4 (4.31) and T2(4.36) with significant differences (p<0.05) among them except (p>0.05) between T1 and T3. The haematological indices showed that though all the parameters fell within the normal physiologic ranges, the PCV was 37.62% (T1), 38.42% (T2), 39.60% (T3) and 39.03% (T4) and when compared, were all significantly different (p<0.05) except (P>0.05) for T3 and T4 while the haemoglobin concentration showed that T1(13.47g/dl) was significantly different (p<0.05) from T2(14.18g/dl), T3(14.34g/dl), and T4(13.97g/dl). The white blood cell count showed that T3 (10.62 x109/L) had the highest value followed by T1 (10.12 x109/L), T4 (9.34 x109/L) and T2 (9.18 x109/L) with a significant difference (p<0.05) occurring when T1 and T3 were compared to T2 and T4 while the red blood cell counts indicated that T1 had the highest value of 4.92 x106/L followed by T3(4.89 x106/L), T2(4.73 x106/L) and T4(4.65 x106/L) without any significant difference among the treatments. All the values fell within the normal range. It is therefore recommended that inclusion of neem leaf meal in the diets of rabbits up to 10% is not detrimental since it improved feed conversion ratio (FCR), growth performance and had no negative effect on haematological values.

A field study was carried out during the two cropping seasons of okra to investigate the efficacy of plant extracts and synthetic insecticides applied singly and synergistic effect of botanicals with the synthetic insecticide on some insect pests of okra. Plots were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), with three replications. Three insect pests of okra (Podagrica uniformis, Podagrica sjostedti and Zenocerous variegatus) were observed on the field. Cypermethrin applied singly and Cypermethrin combined with plant extracts effectively controlled observed insect pests, followed by lone application of plant extracts (L camara, T. vogelii and Z. officinales plant extracts at 1st and 2nd season. Okra yield revealed that both plant extract and Cypermethrin combined with plant extract were not significantly different from one another at first season and at second season Cypermethrin combined with plant extracts performed better than Cypermethrin applied singly. This study indicates that the studied plant extracts can be good synergist for Cypermethrin in controlling field pest of okra.

There exists an inadequate research on the propagation and nutrient needs of most tropical tree species. Hence, this work involves the developmental impact of soil amendments on the early growth of Streculia setigera Del. in the nursery. Different soil amendments; poultry waste (F1), goat manure (F2), cow manure (F3) and the control, normal soil (F4) were applied to several viable seeds of Streculia setigera in the nursery. The seeds were subjected to the same routine nursery practices. The experiment was laid in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and lasted for ninety (90) days. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used in the data analysis. The findings revealed that the entire growth response of Streculia setigera seedlings were only sparely affected by the soil amendments (P<0.05). F3 was found to be the most preferred soil amendment for this species, followed by F2 and F4 consecutively. The result obtained from F1 was very poor and thus it is not ideal for this species.

Opis:
The most important area of a producing reservoir is the near wellbore which is within 5fts into the formation. All fluids have to flow through it, usually at high flow rates. Problems associated with formation damage near wellbore occur frequently, resulting in permeability impairments and increased pressure losses. During drilling, emulsion formation affects reservoir deliverability and ultimate recovery. Most of the existing methods to aid mitigation near oil well damages involve the use of empirical models. Conducting experiments, frequent shut down of wells for proper well test analysis and pressure maintenance are highly expensive and time consuming. Therefore, this paper aimed at optimizing reservoir pressure using cross section comparisons of mathematical tools and experimental for improved emulsion transport near wellbore. Formation damage mechanisms are highlighted for the purpose of reservoir engineers. The engineers must be vigilant about the potential formation damages near wellbore and then can mitigate the impact of damages by understanding its mechanisms how various types of damages might impact production, Assessment, control and remediation. The transient hydraulic diffusivity partial differential equations (THDPDE) models developed. The model equations were resolved using finite difference method and implemented by writing codes in MATLAB language. The solutions obtained were validated using field data and experimental work. The results indicated pressure depletion over time without injection but increases under the influence of increased injection rates enhancing the oil recovery. Experiments were also carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the emulsions as displacing fluid for enhanced oil reservoir. In this paper, a new modeling scheme is proposed and is based entirely on cross section comparisons involving modification of Darcy’s equation with experimental work in an attempt to optimize reservoir pressure and improved oil-in-water emulsions near wellbore. The knowledge that oil-in-water emulsion type exists and that a new scheme to uniquely characterize the near wellbore damage is developed. The present authors suggest cross section comparisons of both modeling and experimental section for predictions of the data in the study area. Numerical simulation has proved to be effective in simulating emulsions near wellbore. The formulated models indicate pressure depletion over time, but increased thereafter, resulting to increased oil recovery and significant improvement in emulsions transport near wellbore.

Surveys were carried out in five local government areas of Ogbomoso Agricultural Zone Nigeria during planting season in 2010 to investigate rural farmers perceptions and management practices of insect pests of fruit vegetables. The survey involved 150 randomly selected farmers who were interviewed using structured questionnaire. Fruit vegetables planted by the farmers were okra, tomatoes, pepper and garden egg. Reasons given by farmers for cultivating fruit vegetables were significantly favored by age category, educational qualification, and secondary occupation of farmers (x2 = 4.757, P = 0.029). Field insect pests were perceived as the major production constraint to fruit vegetables in this zone. Majority of the farmer estimated 78.4 % rated insect pest as the most serious pest infesting fruit vegetables, the insect pests were grasshopper (Orthoptera), beetles (Coleoptera) and caterpillar (Lepidoptera). Integrated pest management module consisted basically of chemical and cultural control strategies, with weeding, shifting cultivation and crop rotation as main cultural control methods. More than 76.7 % of the farmers make use of cultural control because of unavailability and cost of chemical insecticides. Only 23.3 % had access to chemical insecticides in controlling insect pest of fruit vegetables.

This paper examined the numerical simulation of mud filtrate invasion process quantitatively with finite difference scheme that includes the effects of mudcake growth in oil well damage. Most of the existing models are empirical, experimental or rather complex. Efforts have been made to develop the linear flow model involving the modification of Darcy’s equation for determination of mudcake porosity-permeability and thickness through formation pressure near wellbore. The results show the effects of pressure transient on cake buildup over a considerable time intervals. Results also characterized cake parameters and time into low and high permeability zones that are strictly linear with pressure change and supercharging observed during the sensitive formation testing.
