Opis:
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. It is a major public health problem and disease burden worldwide, and especially in Nigeria. This study determined the gender differential in the incidence of Diabetes mellitus among the patients in Udi L.G.A of Enugu State. Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was employed. A sample of 343 diabetes mellitus patients were randomly selected and used for the study. Researchers design data documentary profoma was used to collect the data from selected health facilities in respect to the patients’ gender and their fasting sugar level as contained in their folder or hospital record/register. Frequency and percentages was used to answer research question while the null hypothesis was tested using Chi- square at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the result revealed a high incidence of Diabetes Mellitus in 2012, females recorded a high incidence of DM from 2008-2012 and high percentage of fasting blood sugar level than male. The finding also revealed no difference in the fasting blood sugar based on gender. It is recommended among others that diagnostic investigation on human placental lactose is advocated to reduce or stop its opposition to insulin secretion during pregnancy.

Peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7; donor: hydrogen-peroxide oxidoreductase, POD) is one of the key enzymes controlling plant growth, differentiation and development. The enzyme participates in construction, rigidification and eventual lignification of cell walls, biosynthesis of ethylene from 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid and H2O2, regulation of auxin level through auxin catabolism, protection of tissue from damage and infection by pathogenic microorganisms, the oxidation of indoleacetic acid. For peroxidase activity in wild pears extract one pH optimum was observed at 6.5 that probably belong to atleast one isoenzyme. Activity of peroxidase in presence of guaiacol and H2O2 was optimum after incubation at 40 °C. Maximum activity of peroxidase is 300 % .Activity increased to 240 %, 300 %, 70 % and 10 % after 60 minute incubation at 30, 40, 45 and 60 °C for peroxidase. Incubation at high temperature (70 °C) was accompanied with decrease of activity to 10 % peroxidase activity.

Opis:
This paper deals with the effects of heat transfer on unsteady MHD boundary layer flow of a chemically reading fluid past a vertical plate in the presence of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation. The governing equations of the problem under investigation are systems of partial differential equations. These equations are namely: continuity equation, linear momentum equation and energy equation. These systems of equations were non-dimentionalized by introducing non-dimensional variables. We resulted to dimensionless systems of partial differential equations. The fluid considered in this paper are optically thick, however we employ the Roseland model. Simulations were done numerically on all controlling parameters and the results generated were displayed in graphs and tables. Results review that thermal Grashof number intensifies the velocity profile and increase in Prandtl number leads to decrease in both the velocity and temperature field. Increasing thermal radiation intensifies the velocity and temperature profile. Thermal radiation speeds up the convection flow and thermal boundary layer of the fluid. Increase in magnetic parameter reduces the velocity profile as a result of the applied transverse magnetic field.

Opis:
The need to improve project delivery process is one of the leading advocacies of relevant construction industry reports. Improved process is sine qua non for improve performance. Critical to the improvement process, is the need to assess construction process’ capability to meet design and production requirements. The present study examined process mapping of a cable-stayed bridge in the Nigeria’s east-west coastal highway project. Qualitative data was collected through a three phase process mapping protocol using mainly self-generate, one-on-one interview and focus group. Twenty non-related sub-processes were identified from four pre-construction stages: investigation; feasibility; design; and tender. Integrative definition (IDEFO) and Unified Language Modelling (UML) are used to map the feasibility, design and the design sub-processes. The mapping indicates the design sequence is iterative and factually flexible until such a point where functional design satisfies appropriate forcing test. The study provides medium for communicating complex construction functions thereby facilitating common understanding in the way projects are delivered with appropriate information about inputs, output and resources.

Opis:
As a result of an increasing cases of community protest and opposition to construction projects in the Niger Delta during the construction stages, the present study investigated factors influencing construction stakeholders‟ engagement outcome. The aim was to determine the severity of factors influencing construction stakeholders‟ engagement in the research environment. Due to the pluralist usage of the term stakeholder, the study examined community stakeholders. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using semi-structured interview and questionnaire survey administered on 186 respondents selected from two stakeholders groups using snowballing. 32 factors generated individually and collectively from literature, interview and practice were ranked and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Gap between regulatory requirements and public expectations, location of projects, effect of cumulative development effects, poverty, and lack of information disclosure are some of the high ranking factors influencing engagement performance. Further analysis involving Levene‟s Homogeneity test indicates no significant difference in the population ranking opinion of these factors. This heterogeneous distribution demonstrates strong similarity across the population studied. These factors must therefore be smoothened in future construction engagement process to enhance successful project delivery. The study unveils inherent lacunas in construction project management which strongly correlates project performance.

Opis:
Fuel cell is an alternative renewable energy source which potentially able to replace a fossil fuel. Nowadays, common fuel cell membrane generally used is Nafion. PVDF polymer is another synthetic polymer which has excellent physical and chemical properties. The purpose of this research is to synthesize an alternative fuel cell membrane, using sulfonated PVDF doped with TiO2 nanoparticles. Sol-gel method was performed to synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles, with TiCl4 as precursor. PVDF membranes with variation of TiO2 composition (0, 1, 1.5, and 2%) were prepared with ultrasonic method. The composite membranes then were sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid. The composite membranes were characterized with FTIR for functional group analysis, SEM-EDX for morphology analysis, acid-base titration for degree of sulfonation, weight difference for degree of water uptake, and four point lines for conductivity. FTIR spectra of the sulfonated membrane show the existence of sulfonic group at wavenumber of 601, 1400, and 1454 cm-1. The result of SEM-EDX analysis shows that the nanoparticles of TiO2 were not distributed homogenously. Degree of sulfonation of the PVDF-TiO2 2% composite membrane is 19.54%, and its water uptake is 23.34%. The highest conductivity is about 3.17 × 10-3 S cm-1 for the PVDF-TiO2 2% composite membrane that is very close to Nafion’s conductivity, 6.08 × 10-3 S cm-1.

Opis:
The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of sediments samples collected along the Mahim Creek of Mumbai. The annual average pH value of the creek sediments was recorded as 9.22. It is feared that such conditions may increase the alkalinity of Creek water which according to USEPA will increase the physiological stress of many aquatic species resulting in decreased reproduction, decreased growth, disease, or death thereby reducing the biological diversity of the Creek. The total organic matter in the creek sediments was found to be maximum of 10.30 % with an annual average concentration of 6.29 %. Although organic matter is a primary source of food for benthic organisms and is important in maintaining a viable ecosystem, too much of organic matter deposited in the sediments will be responsible for depletion in dissolved oxygen content of the creek water causing unpleasant odours and may also increase the rate of eutrophication. From the results it appears that as India moves towards stricter regulation of industrial effluents to control water pollution, greater efforts are required to control the discharge of pollutants into the ecosystems.

Opis:
The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the level of toxic heavy metals in the water of Mahim Creek near Mumbai. It was observed that the annual average concentration of heavy metals like Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Zn, Cu and Ni and Hg was found to be 0.68, 0.28, 0.15, 0.04, 2.93, 0.64, 1.29 and 0.31 ppm respectively. The average concentrations of Hg and Pb were found to be above the maximum permissible limit of 0.01 ppm and 0.1 ppm respectively set for inland surface water by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India. The results suggest that there is a need to have such regular scientific monitoring for longer time period in order to understand the variation in level of these toxic heavy metals discharged in to the creek water. It is feared that the existing problem if ignored may increase the pollution problem of the creek due to the toxic heavy metals resulting in threat to the biological life of an aquatic ecosystem. From the results of the present investigation it seems that the time has come to move towards ecosystem specific discharge standards to maintain the health and productivity of natural resources on which the majority of human population is dependent.
