The thermodynamic approach was applied to predict the trend selectivity of industrial grade anion exchange resin Auchlite A-378 in chloride form towards iodide and bromide ions in the solution. The study was conducted by performing the Clˉ/Iˉ and Clˉ/Brˉ uni-univalent ion exchange reactions under gradually increasing temperature conditions. The thermodynamic equilibrium constants K values were used to calculate the enthalpies of the two uni-univalent ion exchange reactions. It was observed that the K values for Clˉ/Iˉ ion exchange reaction were higher than Clˉ/Brˉ exchange reaction under identical experimental conditions. Also the enthalpy values for the two uni-univalent ion exchange reactions were calculated as -39.51 and -18.38 kJ/mol respectively. The high K and low enthalpy values obtained for Clˉ/Iˉ ion exchange reaction is responsible for higher selectivity of the resin towards iodide ions as compared to that towards bromide ions, when both the ions are present in the same solution.

The selectivity behaviour of nuclear grade anion exchange resin Auchlite ARA-9366 in chloride form towards iodide and bromide ions in the solution was studied. The trend in selectivity of the resin was predicted on the basis of thermodynamics of Clˉ/Iˉ and Clˉ/Brˉ uni-univalent ion exchange reactions. It was observed that the equilibrium constants K values for Clˉ/Iˉ ion exchange reaction were higher than that calculated for Clˉ/Brˉ exchange under identical experimental conditions. Also the enthalpy values for the two uni-univalent ion exchange reactions were calculated as -47.87 and -36.14 kJ/mol respectively. The high K and low enthalpy values obtained for Clˉ/Iˉ ion exchange reaction as compared to that obtained during Clˉ/Brˉ exchange supports higher selectivity of the resin towards iodide ions as compared to that towards bromide ions, when both the ions are present in the same solution.

Opis:
In the present investigation, attempts were made to understand the difference in bromide ion selectivity of the two closely related anion exchange resins Auchlite ARA-9366 and Auchlite A-378 in chloride form. The selectivity difference was predicted based on the thermodynamic equilibrium constants and enthalpy values of Clˉ/Brˉ ion exchange reactions performed by using the two resins. During Clˉ/Brˉ exchange reactions, with rise in temperature from 30.0 °C to 45.0 °C, the equilibrium constant (K) values were observed to decreases from 8.15x10-2 to 6.06x10-2 for Auchlite ARA-9366 resins and from 2.16x10-2 to 1.10x10-2 for Auchlite A-378 resins. The decrease in K values with rise in temperature, indicate exothermic ion exchange reactions having enthalpy values of -36.14 and -18.38 kJ/mol respectively. The high K and low enthalpy values obtained for Auchlite ARA-9366 resins indicate their greater selectivity for the bromide ions in the solution as compared to Auchlite A-378 resins.

Opis:
Man’s activities on the environment often results in pollution and degradation of water bodies. Water bodies must therefore be jealously guided and protected from being polluted, which will affect water quality and availability for desired usage. Causes of water quality impairment are urban and rural storm water runoff, inadequate waste water treatment, nutrient entrophication, atmospheric deposition and acid rain, pollutant in sediments and fish, and nuisance aquatic weed growth and invasive species. Other factors include unhygienic disposal and inadequate treatment of human and livestock wastes, indecent management and treatment of industrial residues, inappropriate agricultural practices and unsafe solid waste discharge. Suggested strategies to combat water quality problems which should form the basis of policy solution for improving water quality include: (i) prevention of pollution; (ii) treatment of polluted water; (iii) safe use of waste water; and (iv) restoration and protection of ecosystem. It is recommended that our water bodies and the environment in general should be protected through appropriate legislation guidelines and public literacy campaign and mass education to sensitize, educate and make the people a fully environmentally literate society. Taking these steps internationally, nationally and locally will mean better water quality for our present society and future generation.

Crop raiding activities of primates around Kainji Lake National Park (Borgu Sector), Nigeria was investigated with the use of questionnaires, complemented with field survey focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. One hundred (100) questionnaires were administered to representatives of households in four selected support zone villages. Group discussions were then conducted in the villages. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of percentages, frequencies and charts. We found that crop raiding and animal depredation were sources of conflict in Kainji Lake National Park (Borgu Sector). The primates raiding farmlands identified by the farmers were Olive Baboon (Papio anubis), Patas monkey (Erthrocebus patas), green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops) and other primates that could not be identified by the farmers. The largest percentage of raiding (40%) was perpetrated by Papio anubis, followed by Patas monkey (35%) and the least by Green Monkey (2%). The result showed that maize was the most commonly ranked crop of seasonal harvest that was lost. Moreover, an estimated 3-5 50 kg bags of seed were being destroyed in the planting season. The most effective strategy the local communities used in preventing crop damage was watch guarding (70%). Other methods were fencing (60%), hunting (45%), scare crow (36%) and toxic chemical (5%). The mitigation measure advocated by nearly all respondents (57%) was the killing of destructive wildlife species, irrespective of conservation significance. Measures must put in place to educate these communities about wildlife conservation and to prevent wanton killing. The communities should also be compensated for their loss, as this will lead to positive attitudes to wildlife conservation.

Opis:
An approximate extension of the slender body theory was used to determine the static shape of a conically ended dielectric fluid drop in an electric field. Using induced surface charge density, hydrostatic pressure and the surface tension of the liquid with interfacial tension stresses and Maxwell electric stresses, a governing equation was obtained for Spender geometries for the equilibrium configuration and numerically solved for 3D. For an applied electric field, the electric energy on a spherical drop can be maximized in a weak dielectric by increasing the applied electric field. The minimum dielectric constant ratio needed to produce a conical end is 14.5 corresponding to a cone angle 31.25° .There is a sharp increment of the aspect ratio after reaching the threshold value of the applied field strength and the deformation of the fluid drop increases with the increase in dielectric constant of the fluid drop. For a particular dielectric constant ratio, the threshold electric field producing conical interface increases with the increased surface tension of the liquid. The threshold electric field for a water drop is 1.0854×104 units and the corresponding aspect ratio is 15. For the minimum dielectric ratio the cone angle of the drop decreases with applied field making the drop more stable at higher fields.
