Opis:
In this paper, a numerical study on free convection flow and heat transfer of Casson nanofluids over a vertical plate under the influence of thermal radiation is carried out. The governing systems of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of the flow and heat transfer processes are converted to a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations through suitable similarity variables. The obtained ordinary differential equations are solved using finite difference method. The results of the numerical solutions are compared with the results of past works as presented in literature and good agreement was established. Also, the effects of thermal radiation; Prandtl number, nanoparticles volume-fraction, shape and type on the flow and heat transfer behaviour of various nanofluids over the flat plate are investigated. The results show that the magnitude of velocity near the plate for the Casson nanofluid parameter decreases for increasing value of the Casson parameter, while temperature increases for increase in Casson fluid parameter. Also, the thermal radiation and volume-fraction of the nanoparticles in the base fluid increase, the velocity, temperature, viscous and thermal boundary layers of the nanofluid increase. However, the velocity of the nanofluid decreases as the Prandtl number increases while the temperature of the nanofluid increases as the Prandtl number increases. The velocity of the nanofluid decreases as the volume-fraction or concentration of the nanoparticle in the base fluid increases. The study can benefit the design engineers enhancing their understanding of the phenomenon for various industrial and engineering applications.

Opis:
The advective property of an aquifer in the Eastern Niger Delta was evaluated using a conservative tracer. Tracer migration was monitored in observation boreholes at various radial distances simultaneously. Particle size distribution analysis for the sand samples collected from the boreholes in the study site revealed aquifer composition to be predominantly fine sand (silt =13.42%, fine sand = 41.76%, medium sand = 36.71% and coarse sand = 8.09%) for the 8m depth sampled. This field tracer test thus, provides a definitive data on the simultaneous transport of a soluble contaminant and allows a quantitative appraisal of the advective property of the study site. The mean velocity determined 1.212×10-3 ms-1, represents the advective velocity of groundwater carrying the dissolved tracer substance. This is an indication of how soluble components of hydrocarbon will be transported in the study area. Modeling tracer migration by advection process to estimate where and when a soluble contaminant problem can first be noticed in an environmental matrix and its application in hydrological studies is an effective tool to address problems such as sustainability and uncertainty in groundwater resource system.

Opis:
The complex nature of flow dynamic of water at the subsurface makes it difficult to characterize directly the processes taking place in a porous medium. As a result, carrying out studies on the characteristics of contaminants at the subsurface often relies on indirect measurements of the parameters of the system. To overcome these difficulties and provide information on the subsurface, the continuous use of tracers in simulation studies to model hydrological characteristics at the subsurface has provided an important tool for understanding the flow and mixing dynamics of water resource systems. Results obtained from this radial flow tracer test shows coefficient of longitudinal and transverse dispersion of 2.104×10-3 m2s-1 and 1.54×10-3 m2s-1 respectively, longitudinal and transverse dispersivity of 1.73m and 1.27m respectively. Multidimensional transport in an aquifer involves both longitudinal and transverse dispersion in addition to advection process. Transverse dispersion in an aquifer spreads dissolved contaminant by molecular diffusion when flow velocity of groundwater is highly low. Initial concentration of dissolved contaminants at the point of release can produce an upstream spreading in a longitudinal transverse direction by molecular dispersion which is a diffusion-like process in an aquifer. Results obtained from tracer test can be used to characterize a site and for groundwater monitoring. Having basic knowledge of some physical processes taking place at the subsurface such as that produced from tracer test can also help in the design of environmental network to evaluate possible accidental migration of contaminants once it occur in aquifers and plan suitable mitigation actions to safeguard our water resource.

Opis:
The study was carried out to ascertain seasonal variation in heavy metal distribution in sediments from Dams located in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Sediment samples were collected twice each at two different seasons for two years from May to September, 2014 and November-December, 2014 to March, 2015 for wet and dry seasons, respectively. Similarly, sediment samples were collected from May to September, 2015 and November-December, 2015 to March, 2016 for wet and dry seasons, respectively. The samples were then assessed for heavy metal properties, using atomic absorption spectrophotography (AAS). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was then applied. The mean results of the heavy metal levels showed high values in dry seasons and low values in wet seasons in the two years of the study. Herein, the results of ANOVA revealed significant difference in the heavy metal concentrations between the seasons, dams and years. Our study also indicated that for heavy metals, the levels determined in sediments were within the WHO acceptable standards, except for Pb and Mn. These exceeded the WHO acceptable standards for drinking water. Based on these results, the dam waters are, therefore, polluted and unsuitable for human consumption, except after treatment.

Opis:
This study explores factors affecting facilities’ compliance to environmental regulations. The objectives were to: examine operator’s knowledge of environmental legal requirement of the facility, identify factors affecting environmental compliance and determine relationship between facility and environmental regulators. Systematic random sampling was used in selecting facilities, while purposive random sampling was adopted in selecting respondents from each facility. Simple random sampling was employed in selecting respondents from the regulatory agencies. The instrument for data collection from the respondents is a semi-structured set of questionnaires each for facility and regulators respectively. The questionnaire was administered to one hundred and twenty (120) respondents drawn from eight (8) facilities in different sectoral groups, while one hundred and sixteen (116) were administered to the regulatory agencies (NESREA and NISEPA). Findings shows that challenges militating against compliance to environmental regulations in the area include: the relationship between the regulatory agencies and the facility operators as reported by 22.9% of respondents who upheld that there is fairly relationship between the facility operators and the regulatory agencies. More so, the singled most influential factor is lack of awareness of the regulations (52.5%). Consultation between the environmental regulators and the facility operators prior to the introduction of any environmental regulation is a factor in environmental compliance as reported by 37.6% of the respondents (facility operators) who maintained that they are not consulted before introducing any environmental regulation. It is recommended among others that every facility operator should be considered as a stakeholder in drafting environmental regulations. Exclusion of them is tantamount to low level of compliance as they will claim not to be aware of the regulations. Also, there is need to consistently create environmental awareness among the facility operators and the general public in order to become environment conscious and uphold environmental sustainability.

Quantitative analysis/interpretation was undetaken on an aeromagnetic data covering latitude 6°00’-6°30’N and longitude 7°00’-7°30’E of Mmaku area, South Eastern, Nigeria by means of spectral depth analysis and Euler Deconvolution. To determine the sedimentary thickness or the depth to basement peculiar within the area, regional-residual separation was applied on the total aeromagnetic data. The resulting residual was divided into overlapping sixteen (16) spectral grids using Ms Excel. This was saved in Comma Separated Variable (CSV) format and thus imported into Origin Pro software where Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) or spectral analysis was performed on the windowed or gridded residual. The residual data was also imported into Oasis Montaj software for Standard 3D Euler Deconvolution. The result of the spectral analysis shows that the depth to various causative sources vary from 3.472 km to 6.972 km for the deeper sources, with average thickness of 5.010 km and 1.177 km to 1.834 km for the shallower sources, with average value of 1.047 km. From the Euler depth solutions, depth values ranging from 1525.74 km to 2919.21 km was revealed using structural index (SI) of 1 while depth values of 2290.49 km to 4447.62 km and 925. 93 km to 5790.49 km was observed when SI of 2 and 3 respectively were chosen. This study presents, therefore, suitable sedimentary thickness for hydrocarbon exploration to exist within the area.

Garcina kola leaves were collected, washed, dried and powdered. The ethanol extracts were first prepared by the simple method of cold extraction. The extracts were then characterized by the Phytochemical analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) to identify the fatty acids and heterocyclic compounds present in the leaf extracts. The FTIR analysis shows a variation of the peaks that indicate there is synergy among the functional groups of the extract. Moreover, the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenol, saponins, tannins and steroids. The study reveals that the chemical constituents of Garcina kola leaf may be behind their medicinal values in phytomedicine.
