Opis:
Primitive and tribal religions were not ideologically consistent. There was no concept of the only true faith and apostasy. The article is devoted to religious exclusivism in its veiled forms. In Indo-European tradition, religious differences emerged from a social organization. According to G. Dumézil's theory, each caste had its gods and its own variety of religion. Also, some tribes, e.g. Goths, shaped their ethnic identity on the basis of myth, rituals and taboo. In totem groups, religion was defined by the clan. Each member of a given family had to follow their own customs and reject foreign religions. The price was the life of the whole community. Indo-European mythology, literary and archaeological data suggest the religious authority of the clan. Studies on the specificity of religious exclusivity in ancient traditions are possible, but they must be implemented with methodological caution.

prophetism

germanic mythology and rituals
Opis:
The article discusses Germanic ideas and terminology about fate and predicting the future. The problem of prophetism in the history of the Germans is defined by two stages. The first is the “axial age” according to K. Jaspers. This is the time when the prophets known from the Old Testament begin their activity, when philosophy is born in Greece, and the question of fate and destiny matures among the “barbarian” peoples. The Germanic tribes used the achievements of the Celts in this regard. The ancient texts concerning the Germans speak mainly of divination, divinatory techniques. They are a typical interpretatio romana. The Germans did not know the beliefs related to the prophetic message or Providence. The second stage is Christian inspiration. Medieval records contain data on the relics of old epochs in the beliefs of the Germans. They talk about the gradual orientation of their divination interests towards the recognition of the judgments of Providence. This information is initially steeped in pagan heritage. Separating aspects of spirituality that knows prophetic institutions from pre-literate faith that trusts in divination is very complicated. In order to avoid the error of interpretatio christiana, one must carefully analyze the messages from the period of pagan conversion. Medieval information can then be useful to develop a model of providia specific to the ancient Germans.

Germanic religion
the problem of transcendence and immanence of germanic
Opis:
The article attempts to define the scope of the transcendence of the main gods in the religion of ancient Germans. Testimony of G.J. Caesar and P.C. Tacitus differ on this point. Caesar describes the germanic gods as visible and material phenomena. Tacitus gives them the rank of mysterious, inaccessible creatures without a name or an image, giving signs read by means of fortune-telling. Various beings were denoted as gods in Germanic languages. Aesir are primordial images of ancestors or beings having a divine substance of life for the entire tribe. Ragina is a deity personifying decision and resolution. Like the Tīwaz, which came from the Indo-European era, it was related to judgments at war meetings. Odin and Thor, as gods of war, marginalized Tyr / Tīwaz. Their functions show the process of the god’s immanence, their indispensable presence for groups of warriors. This tendency is confirmed by the historic replacement of the old name of the heavenly supreme god deiwos with a new – guda. Guda is a being that is called upon, whose presence is experienced. In the history of the religious life of the ancient Germans, there is a tendency to define gods as creatures who have a clear influence on the everyday problems of people engaged in war.
