Opis:: A new subfamily Vereoxiinae among Canestriniidae is created for the new genus Vereoxia with one species V. bogeri n. sp. Four new canestriniid species are described: Gasuthiana melillae n. sp. from undetermined Tenebrionidae, Brazil, Afrocanestrinia rufinae n. sp. from Smaragdesthes oertzeni, Tanzania, A. samsoni n. sp. from S. africana, Senegal, Canestriniella phoebinae n. sp. from Batocera albofasciata octomaculata, Java. New diagnosis of the genera Gasuthiana, Afrocanestrinia and Canestriniella are given.

Opis:: In July 1988, arthropods from 6 Castor fiber were collected at Popielno near Ruciane. Schizocarpus numerosus Dub., S.fedjushini Dub., S. brachyurus Dub. are new to the fauna of Poland. Ixodes hexagonus Leach (larvae, nymphs, females) is especially numerous. Underdevelopment of the coxa and trochanter of the third left leg was noted in one female. Moreover, Acarus farris (Oud.), Cunaxoides kielczewskii Mich. and unidentified female of the Phytoseiidae were obtained. Cunaxid mites have not been collected hitherto from mammals. At the present time in Poland, 8 species (including Platypsyllus castoris Rit.) of arthropods are found on C. fiber.

Opis:: The paper deals with the histological structure of the brain in the specimens of the Tabanidae family including Tabanus, Chrysops and Chrysosona genera. Measurements of the brain volume and of the brain cen tres were made and the ratio of the size of the centres to that of the brain was given on the example of the female of Tabanus bromius. Lobi olfactorii are the best developed brain centres in Tabanidae. They take up 88.53% of the whole brain in the female of Tabanus bromius. Corpora pedunculata are poorly developed (0.14%) and built up of single, small calyces and thin stalks. The central body is well developed and consists of three parts. The central body takes up 0.15% of the size of the brain in the female of Tabanus bromius. Although lobi olfactorii are small when compared with the size of the brain (0.29%), the size of the antennal glomerules and thick fibres of the antenno-globular tracts are an evidence of a well developed sense of smell in those parasites.

Three new genera are created: Rudaemannia n. gen., Bursaustium n. gen. and Yucothrombium n. gen. Erythraeus kresnensis, Charletonia cardinalis, Podothrombium proti, Allothrombium fuliginosum and A. triticium are new to the fauna of Turkey; Hauptmannia wratislaviensis is new to the fauna of Scotland. New localities in Poland are given for H. stanislavae and H. silesiacus and in Turkey for Rudaemannia rudeansis. Charletonia tamarae is synonymous to C. bucephalia; Hauptmannia victicola is synonymons to R. rudaensis.

Opis:: Toxocarosis is still an important and actual problem in human medicine. It can manifest as visceral (VLM), ocular (OLM) or covert (CT) larva migrans syndroms. Complicated life cycle of Toxocara, lack of easy and practical methods of species differentiation of the adult nematode and embarrassing in recognition of the infection in definitive hosts create difficulties in fighting with the infection. Although studies on human toxocarosis have been continued for over 50 years there is no conclusive answer, which of species - T. canis or T. cati constitutes a greater risk of transmission of the nematode to man. Neither blood serological examinations nor microscopic observations of the morphological features of the nematode give the satisfied answer on the question. Since the 90-ths molecular methods were developed for species identification and became useful tools being widely applied in parasitological diagnosis. This paper cover the survey of methods of DNA analyses used for identification of Toxocara species. The review may be helpful for researchers focused on Toxocara and toxocarosis as well as on detection of new species. The following techniques are described: PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism), RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) and SSCP (Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism).

Opis:: Onychomycosis is a public health concern because of its high world wide prevalence and its potential for spread of fungal elements to others. About one half of all patients presenting to dermatologists' offices for nail disorders have onychomycosis. This kind of infection may impact upon physical, functional and emotional aspects of life. Onychomycosis can be treated with the new generation of oral antifungals. Efficacy rates for fingernail onychomycosis are high; however, for toenail onychomycosis, efficacy rates may range from 60% to 80%. Relapse rates have been estimated to be 15% to 20% measured at 2 years following therapy initiation. Because many factors may be associated with a suboptimal clinical response, consideration to measures that retlect the most appropriate pharmacologic and supportive regimens must be made in order to meet the challenge of onychomycosis cure. In some situations supplemcntal therapy consisting of extra antifungal or adjunctive (topical/surgical) therapy may be beneficial.
