The total number of examined sheatfishes derived from Biebrza river was 151, the over-all infestation amounted to 69.3%. Among the 14 species of detected intestinal parasites (table) three: Silirotaenia siluri (Batsch, 1786), Rhabdochona denudata (Dujardin, 1845) and Orientocreadium siluri (Bychowsky et Dubinina, 1954) were new ones for Poland. The examination was also concerned with the correlation between the parasitic fauna of sheatfish and its victim - burbot (Lota lota). The incidence of Ergasilus sie boldi Nordm. and Piscicola geometra (L.) in sheatffsh was an additional finding.

The experiments were made on 180 hens aged from 1 day to 10 weeks. The animals were infected peroral, subcutaneously or intraperitoneally. The material for infection (RH strain) was used as exudate of mice (trophozoite) or as organs of rats or rabbits infected a year ago (cysts). Investigated was also the possibility of infection in healthy hens through direct contact with diseased ones. The items taken in consideration were as follows: (1) clinical picture, (2) hematologic examinations includimg number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, white cell count, (3) serologic studies using complement fixation and dye tests, (4) effect of food on the mechanism by which hens get infected per os (alkaline, neutral or acid reaction), (5) anatomo-pathologic, microscopic studies and isolation of strain. The results obtained prompt the following conclusions: (1) experimental toxoplasmosis of hens is difficult to induce and the moment of infection food seems to play a major role in the mechanism of infection. The mortality of hens is lower than in other animals infected in the same way and conditions, and even spontaneous cure may occasionally take place; (2) in peroral infection food seems to play a major role in the mechanism of infection. The administration of alkaline food increases the chance of infection; (3) in experimental conditions healthy hens may contract infection from diseased ones through direct contact; (4) hematologic studies do not seem to be of important diagnostic value, whereas the reduction in the number of erythrocytes may indieate an evolution of pathologic process; (5) Serologically (CFT and DT) the presence of antibodies is not an invariable finding, the positive reactions showing comparatively low titres.

Opis:
A total of 2398 fish specimens (1091 Percidae and 1307 Cyprinidae) belonging to 16 species (3 Percidae and 13 Cyprinidae), caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined within December 1994-March 1997. The parasites found were identified as belonging to 63 taxa (61 species as well as Diplostomum spp. flukes and glochidia Unionidae gen. sp. which could not be identified to species) of the Microsporea (1), Protozoa (1), Myxozoa (2), Monogenea (10), Digenea (15), Cestoda (11), Nematoda (11), Acanthocephala (5), Hirudinea (1), Mollusca (1), Copepoda (4), and Branchiura (1). The percids and cyprinids were found to support 37 and 40 parasitic taxa, respectively, the taxon-richest parasite fauna occurring in zander, Sander lucioperca (26 taxa), followed by carp bream, Abramis brama, (24), European perch, Perca fluviatilis (24), roach, Rutilus rutilus (19), ruffe, Gymnocelphlus cernuus (15), and Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio (11). The remaining fish species hosted less than 10 parasitic species each. Metacercariae of the genus Diplostomum, found in about 37% of the fish examined, and Tylodelphys clavata, recorded in about 24% of the fish, proved the commonest parasites. The study showed the Vistula Lagoon cyprinid and percid parasite fauna to be dominated by freshwater species, frequencies of their occurrence in the brackishwater lagoon being lower than those in freshwater reservoirs. Frequencies of the 6 marine parasitic species found in the lagoon were, too, lower than those in the sea. It is suggested that some of the parasites (Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Diplozoon paradoxum of the Monogenea, Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata of the Digenea, and Achtheres percarum of the Copepoda) prefer brackishwater habitats.

In May 1958 an unkmown parasite was received for investigation by the Eye-Department of the Hospital at Bydgoszcz. The paraisite had been found in the front eyeball ventricle of 3-year old boy. Closer, investigations revealed that it was Hypoderma lineatum (de Villers) larva Tesponsible for the ophthalmomyasis the boy was suffering from. This is the first written report of an ophthalmomyasis caused by the larva of H. lineatum in this country.

Opis:
A histochemical assay was elaborated to study lactate dehydrogenase activity in the tissues of Fasciola hepatica and in the liver of mice during the course of fasciolosis. LDH activity was determined in the tegument, muscles, parenchyma, oral sucker and the caecum of juvenile and adult liver flukes inhabiting the host liver parenchyma and bile ducts. The most substantial changes in LDH activity were recorded in the tegument outer surface layer. White mice of CFW strain were infected with 10, 30 and 50 doses of F. hepatica metacerkariae administered per os. A dramatic decrease in LDH activity in the experimental mice liver during the course of infection, particularly in the acute fasciolosis was observed.

The statokinetic organ was examined using the thermal, rotary and galvanic tests in 28 patients suffering from dizziness in the course of infection with intestinal parasites of the alimentary tract (13 cases of lambliosis, 8 cases of taeniasis, 7 cases of infection with Trichuris trichiura and Enterobius vermicularis). The patients complained of dizziness but without accompanying ear noises and defect hearing. All patients were examined internistically, otolaryngologically, audiometrically and in case of need neurologically and oculistically. The age of the patients was from 18 to 50 years, the highest number constituted persons between 30 and 40 years. Dizziness was most marked in the course of lambliosis. Out of the total number of 28 patients, in 24 were found abnormal labyrinth reactions, in 2 of them lack of excitability, diminished excitability in 21 persons, directional prevalence of nystagmus in one case. Control examinations conducted on 12 patients during the period from 6 months to 3 years following the cure (1 or more treatments) revealed normal excitability of the labyrinths, general feeling of wellbeing and receding or digestive disturbances in 10 persons, in 2 persons the excitability of the labyrinths remained abnormal, dizziness persisted and there were complaints of ailments of the alimentary organ. The results of these studies are in accordance with the data of Dix and Hallpike and other authors and the pathological picture corresponds to the unit described and named by Dix and Hallpike neuronitis vestibularis. In the cases described by me the injury to the I vestibular neuron could becaused by the action of toxins on the vestibular organ on a toxic-allergic way with the participation of vestibular - vegetative reflexes. This is confirmed by the fact that in the majority of the cases following the anti-parasitic treatment dizziness receded and the labyrinth reactions became normal.
