Opis:
Al-Munāǧāt in its two extant versions belongs to the shortest writings of Šihāb ad-Dīn Yaḥyà as-Suhrawardī (1154-1191), the founder of Illuminationist school of Islamic philosophy. The article aims at analyzing the philosophical terminology that this prayer is composed of. It demonstrates how much the terminology agrees with that used in his other works and how the prayer combines some major elements of the thought of As-Suhrawardī in a very concise form. All it is done based on the critical edition of the text as well as Polish translation by the author.

Osmołowo (Bel. Asmolava) is a village located near the town of Kletsk (Pol.=Bel. Kleck) in the eastern territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (today south-west Belarus). Since the middle of the 16th century it had been the centre of the Tatar settlement in the Kletsk Duchy which was the property of the Radziwiłł noble family. The only Tatar cemetery that has been preserved in Osmołowo until today had been founded at the beginning of the 19th century. The oldest grave with an inscription dates back to 1805. We have discovered 27 inscriptions from the 1st half of the 19th century The epigraphical tradition in Osmołowo at that time represented similar trends as in other cemeteries of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatar gentry. The inscriptions had been composed of Arabic or Turkish confessional formulas (mainly shahada) and of the information about the deceased (name, date of death, military ranks, family affiliation) in Polish, written in Latin and/or Arabic script. In the next decades of the 19th century, the inscriptions developed in the same way as in other cemeteries of the small-town communities of the Tatars during this period which meant that the Arabic script was used both for the confessional section and informative section (in Polish or Belorussian), and introduction of more varied Arabic or Turkich eschatological formulas as ayat 3:182, and Turkish invocations Allāh raḥmet eylesin (Tur. “Let the God have mercy”), ey ğennet müyesser eyle (Tur. “O, paradise, be accessible”) which eventually transformed into Allāh raḥmet eyle ğennet firdeuse (Tur.-Per. “O, God, have mercy, heaven, paradise”).

Opis:
The article tackles the issue of conversion of Slavic Russians to Islam. The phenomenon is not new; it dates back to the 19th century and was connected with the Caucasian war. Nowadays, converts to Islam are usually young people, mainly students. The reasons for their conversion are diverse; thus, this is not a monolithic group. It consists of certain specific types that can be distinguished on the basis of the reasons for their conversion to Islam. This article categorises the new Russian Muslims under study, which are believed to be composed of four separate groups: people who married a Muslim, those attracted by the mysticism of religion (looking for God), people who consciously accept Islam as a religion with a tangible historical, ethnographic and cultural heritage, and finally those who are attracted by radical Islamic movements.

John Wansbrough has contributed to the development of new research tools in the field of Islamistics, especially in the earliest history of Islamic writings. His idea was to apply one of the methods of biblical criticism (form criticism) to the ample bibliographical source materials of the Islamic tradition. No wonder that the results of Wansbrough’s studies are quite different from what is commonly taught in the West and in the East about the genesis of Islam. Wansbrough represents the Western sceptical school of studies on the Islamic origins and has contemporary followers.

Opis:
Since 1948, Palestinian topics have been adopted by writers from different Arabic countries and have acted as a kind of political manifesto. By 1967 they were dominated by secularist views, primarily nationalist and socialist. The defeat of the Arab armies in the war with Israel in 1967 was followed by an ideological crisis that, in later years, resulted in the rise of fundamentalist sentiments. Religion marginalised the old socialist or pan-Arabic ideas and again became an important element of social discourse and the new Arab identity. The popularisation of the Islamic ideology changed the categorisation of the Palestinian conflict from secular into religious. The article examines – on the basis of the novel Umar yazharu fi al-Quds by Nagib al-Kilani – the role which literature played in the process of building a new historical consciousness through the dissemination of Muslim symbols, terms and arguments.

The aim of this article is to present views on the Arab-Islamic tradition (turas) of one of the most famous contemporary Arab thinkers Muhammad Abed al-Jabiri. This Moroccan scholar was an important promoter of democracy in the Arab World. He stood out from the rest of pro-democratic thinkers in his thorough analysis of the Arab-Islamic tradition, a good understanding of which, according to him, plays a great role in the future of the Islamic world. The article discusses his deliberations on the history of Islamic philosophy. By concentrating on this subject, Al-Jabiri wanted to find evidence that rational forces had been present in Islamic legacy for a long time and should be resurrected today in order to shape public opinion towards more sceptical reading of tradition. The result of this would be the desired nahda – Arabic Renaissance and modernity. In this task he recalls the medieval philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes) whom he considers an example to be followed in matters such as the relation between religion and science, the attitude towards non-Muslim concepts and the struggle against harmful mysticism.

This article shows the level of patriotic awareness of citizens at the beginning of 1918 and two years later following the programme of educating the society. It also compares the level of armaments and financial status of the conscripts at the beginning of the army’s formation and at the moment when the Red Army occupied the country in 1920.

The article is an attempt to present and analyze main dimensions of contemporary Iranian dispute concerning the so called ezdevaj-e sefid (“white marriage”) that is a relation of two unmarried people living under one roof. A study of the public domain that involves discussions of academics, journalists, state institutions and religious circles, as well as ordinary Iranians, allows its two main dimensions to be distinguished. The first is focused on describing this phenomenon and assessing its social, demographical, moral and psychological consequences and the second one concerns the legal status of “white marriages” in the Iranian legal system and discusses its possible analogies in Shi’a legal doctrine.

Opis:
The discussion on reforms in Islam has been ongoing in the Islamic world for many decades. This trend was also present in Iran, where it gained particular intensity after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It was religious intellectuals who took the main debate upon themselves. Their activity and efforts concentrated around the problem of the adaptation of Islamic rules to the modern world. One of their proposals was to change the classical method of theological reflection. Although Islamic theology (kalam) during the first centuries of Islam become the queen of all Islamic sciences, contemporary Iranian thinkers are calling for the development of a new paradigm of religious reflection – a new kalam, kalam-e jadid, which would be characterized by rationality, openness to interpretation and criticism and would remain in constant dialogue with the non-religious sciences. The paper is an attempt to reconstruct the main assumptions of Iranian kalam-e jadid based on the views of its most important advocates.

Islam is the main religion of the Egyptian state and the basics of Sharia law are the main source of its legislation. According to the constitution, religion is one of the most important subjects in pre-university education. The role of religion is not only legislative. While talking about society, it should be mentioned that religion also plays an important role among Egyptians. Teaching religion is therefore a sensitive issue and should be significant for the government. The way they teach it and the topics they consider crucial for children to learn may later have a great impact not only on the spiritual life of believers, but also their vision of the country, the world, their way of thinking and their relationships with others – fellow citizens and tourists visiting their country. The author of the article presents the relation of ‘authorities-teaching Islam’ in governmental primary schools on the basis of examples of the content of Egyptian textbooks concerning Islam – called Islamic Upbringing – which are connected with selected topics considered important for the country. The range of the research stretches from 2013 to 2016. Topics approached in the article concern the fight against terrorism and extremist ideas, the meaning of ‘Egyptian’ and the co-existence of all citizens of Egypt – Muslims and Christians – and patriotic education. The presented content of the textbooks for Islamic Upbringing takes into account the activities of President ʿAbd al-Fattāh as-Sīsī and the government to identify whether the textbooks are compatible with public life and the current situation in the country.

The paper is an attempt to sum up efforts being made in the field of Quranic Studies to come up with a critical edition of the text of the Quran – the holy book of Islam – basing on oldest, extant Quranic manuscripts and secondary literature, and this in order to enable text criticism based on source texts. The quest for authographic / interpretative text-forms of the Qur’anic revelations is an attempt to reach back as far as possible into the earliest history of Islam. The reconstruction of a critical text of the Qur’an, i.e. a (single or multiple) original version(s) of the text from which all subsequent manuscript versions and readings stem, is an ongoing quest for scholars of Quranic studies, in the Western and Eastern hemisphere. And that is because merely the process of studying the manuscripts delivers us unique insight into Quranic history – historical insight, dogmatic insight and literary insight.

Opis:
The Polish-Lithuanian Tatars began to form their own literature in the Polish and Old Byelorussian languages from the end of the 16th century. All Tatar texts were handwritten exclusively in Arabic script, irrespective of their own language. Tatar writings were characterized by the anonymity of the author but we know the author of the most important literary achievement of this community – the complete translation of the Qur’an dated 1686: the imam of Minsk, Urjasz b. Ism‚‘īl Szlamowicz. Most of the Tatar texts were translated from the Islamic popular religious literature spread in the land of the Golden Horde and Ottoman Empire. The appearance of this sort of Tatar oeuvre resulted from the fact that the Tatars had lost their native tongue sometime within the 16th and 17th c. This made the translation of the popular Islamic literature necessary to preserve the Tatars’ own religion. The Tatar manuscripts also contain an important component adopted from the Old Polish Christian literature including the Polish translation of the Bible by Szymon Budny (1572) created for the Arians – the most radical protestant movement in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Tatars integrated a significant amount of motifs and ideas of their Christian social environment into their religious Islamic traditions. Therefore we can assume that another factor that contributed to the rise of the Tatar literature was the religious and cultural revival which encompassed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th c. during the Renaissance and Reformation era. Apparently it played an important role in the cultural integration of this Turkic-Islamic community with local Christian society and culture.
