Opis:
In the paper, the vision-based method of static in-plane deflection measurement of a structure is presented. Displacements of measurement points of the structure under the load are computed by means of the normalized digital image correlation coefficient. The application of the homography transformation enables the deflection field to be computed from two images of the structure acquired from distinct points in space. The scale coefficient calculation and marker matching algorithms have been introduced in order to increase the level of automation of the method. The paper presents the results of numerical investigations of the uncertainty propagation in the proposed algorithms. The qualitative comparison of the numerical data and the results of the experiment have been shown.
W pracy przedstawiono wizyjną metodę pomiaru statycznego ugięcia konstrukcji. Przemieszczenia punktów pomiarowych wyznaczane są z wykorzystaniem znormalizowanego współczynnika korelacji wzajemnej. Zastosowanie przekształcenia homograficznego umożliwiło pomiar pola przemieszczeń na podstawie fotografii konstrukcji wykonanej z dowolnego punktu przestrzeni. W celu zwiększenia stopnia automatyzacji metody wprowadzono algorytmy wyznaczania współczynnika skali oraz dopasowania znaczników. W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki symulacji numerycznych propagacji niepewności w proponowanym algorytmie. Pokazano wyniki jakościowego porównania danych symulacyjnych i wyników eksperymentalnych.

Opis:
Different kind of foams, usually made from polymers, metals, ceramics, glass, etc. have been widely used in various branches of civil engineering since the 80s. The most common are polyurethane foams. Since their role in construction nowadays is not only to act as a thermal barrier but also to take some of loads, the engineers need to know also their mechanical properties. This implies that manufacturers or designers must perform a number of laboratory tests in order to find a set of substantial parameters of this particular material. Due to noticeable orthotropic behavior of foams, one needs to carry out several laboratory tests to identify elastic properties only. Here, an enhanced testing methodology is proposed to reduce the number of tests required for characterization of elastic orthotropic properties of foams. By combining the advanced measurement techniques, non-traditional experimental setup, numerical modeling and inverse analysis one can capture all nine elastic properties from just two or three tests. In the paper, full experimental and numerical procedures are presented and validated by noisy pseudo-experimental data.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is to analyze the stress concentration factor (SCF) in the corner of a rectangular plate opening with small radii of curvature and various methods for its derivation. Besides the finite element method, as the most used approach today, there are some analytical and experimental procedures that can obtain stress concentration results in such spots. An analytical approach can deliver prediction of the SCF around the corner but cannot illustrate the stress field opposite to the finite element method. On the other hand, finite element analysis needs much computation time to deal with very sensitive and fine mesh generation around concentration zones. Experimental devices, such as strain gauges are not able to perform measurements on areas where high gradient of stress occurs due to their lack of sensitiveness and larger dimensions compared to the measured part of a structure. The paper presents Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique that obtains not only stress concentration, where other devices fail, but also provides full displacement, strain and stress field’s even where a high gradient of stress exists. These three methods are discussed, compared and illustrated on the model of a plate with rectangular opening subjected to tension.

Opis:
The challenge for researchers is to develop measurement techniques that can deal with biological specimens (e.g. the human Achilles tendon) characterized by high deformation during examination. The relevant quantity which has to be investigated in laboratory experiments is the deformation or strain field of the specimen subjected to a given load. In experimental mechanics, the most remarkable technique used for strain field computation is the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. In the paper, the DIC method is employed to study biomaterial parameters of human Achilles tendons (AT) subjected to tensile uniaxial loadings. The application of DIC allows the heterogeneity of tendon deformation to be taken into consideration. Young’s modulus of AT based on the strain field obtained from a vision-based measurement is estimated and the results are discussed. A map of Young’s modulus (YM) is demonstrated as well.

Opis:
An experimental protocol, including the combined application of both innovative and traditional sensing techniques, is described aiming to explore the mechanical response of marble and also to check the possibilities of detecting precursor phenomena designating upcoming catastrophic fracture. The protocol consisted of three-point bending tests with notched prismatic beams made of Dionysos marble, the material extensively used for restoration of the Acropolis of Athens monuments. The sensing system improvised included techniques relying on completely different physical foundations, which permit simultaneous detection and recording of the Pressure Stimulated Currents, Acoustic Emissions, three dimensional displacement fields and Notch Mouth Opening Displacements. Analysis of the results revealed interesting features of the mechanical response of Dionysos marble and indicated, also, that classical Continuum Fracture Mechanics fails to describe accurately the response of marble, at least in the presence of notches. In addition, strong correlations between the Pressure Stimulated Currents, the rate of acoustic hits and the rate of change of the opening of the pre-existing notch have been enlightened. Moreover, the onset of catastrophic crack propagation appears following distinguishable changes of the Pressure Stimulated Currents recorded. Therefore (and taking into account the very small size of the respective sensors as well as the simple complementary equipment needed), it is concluded that the specific technique could be considered as a simple and reliable tool for an alternative approach to the in-situ Structural Health Monitoring of classical stone monuments.
