Opis:
The experiment analysed magnitude and structure of invertebrate fauna caught in different empty bottles and cans left by tourists in the four different forest ecosystems. Empty boxes that previously had contained several types of beverage (mineral water, apple juice, bread derived dark brown beverage, coke and beer) were installed. Each bottle was repeated three times. They were subsequently examined on three occasions for invertebrates every two weeks. A total of 1069 specimens belonging to 27 species or taxa were captured. The highest catchability was recorded in fresh mixed coniferous forest. The presence of saprophagous and predatory species in the emptied beverage boxes suggests the establishment of detritus trophic chains. The species composition similarity of invertebrates captured in the empty bottles depended on the site fertility and, only to a minor degree, on the type of beverage. The PCA showed that another factor influential in the species composition of captured fauna was the degree of transparency of the box. The dominant species was A. sterocorosus; this beetle was most frequently captured in the mixed coniferous forest type. The experiment showed very high danger for the forest invertebrate fauna from the side of empty bottles left by tourists.

Opis:
Modernization of railways in Poland should ensure not only safety of passengers, but also limit their negative impact on the environment, especially possibility of train collisions with animals. The aim of the study conducted in the years 2007−2013 on the E20 railway Mińsk Mazowiecki−Siedlce were (1) to record places where animals cross the railway most often, both on the stretches secured and unsecured with sonic deterring devices (UOZ−1), and (2) to specify the number and locations of collisions of trains with mammals. Winter tracking along the railways identified 12 mammal species that crossed the railways. These included four ungulates (moose, red deer, roe deer, wild boar) and eight smaller mammals (red fox, marten, domestic dog, domestic cat, polecat, stoat, brown hare, red squirrel). The average number of tracks of all mammals was higher on the stretches with UOZ−1 than on the stretches over 100 meters away from UOZ−1 (1.52 and 1.01/100 m, respectively, p<0.0001). For ungulates it was higher on the stretches with UOZ−1 (0.66 and 0.38/100 m respectively, p<0.0005) as well. During the study 26 cases of animals kills as result of collisions with trains were recorded: 9 mooses, 2 red deer, 7 roe deer, 15 wild boars, 1 fox, 1 stone marten, 4 dogs. Most of these collisions took place out of the range of UOZ−1.

Opis:
A study was carried out on faeces samples from red deer and roe deer in the area of Forestry Tuchola and determined that these animals were infected with three species of lung nematodes: red deer – Elaphostrongylus cervi and Varestrongylus sagittatus, and roe deer – Varestrongylus capreoli. A high level of infection can cause death to red deer and roe deer calves.

Opis:
The study focuses on capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and other Galliformes birds reintroduction projects carried out in Europe since the 1950s. In Germany alone, there have been eleven projects involving the release of a total of ca. 5,000 caprcaillies, mainly obtained from the closed breeding centres. The majority of birds died shortly after release. The high mortality was caused by great pressure from predators and the poor adaptation of the birds bred in captivity to the wild−life conditions. The high mortality among the birds from artificial breeding is associated with changed morphology (e.g. shorter digestive tract, less−developed pectoral muscles), physiology, and behaviour (insufficiently developed social and anti−predatory behavioural mechanisms). Survival rates among the birds released into the wild were primarily affected by the method of breeding and release, quality of habitat, and pressure from predators. The survival rates of translocated birds were higher than those obtained from traditional breeding in aviaries. Better results were also obtained with the 'born to be free' method of breeding and release based on social contact between the mother and chicks. The following actions are obligatory in reintroduction projects: predators reduction, evaluation and improvement in the quality of environment, as well as long−term monitoring of birds. The factors crucial for the effectiveness are: the total number of birds released, the number of released birds in subsequent years, and the overall duration of the project.
