    Opis:
    The study analyses accident rate in the Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Szczecinek (NW Poland) in the years 1990−2009. 1042 accidents occurred in the analyzed period. The frequency rate equalled to 14.75, i.e. almost 15 accidents per 1000 employees. The severity rate amounted 48.65. The analysis showed that privatization of forest works did not have significant impact on accident rates.

    Opis:
    Nowadays private forests in Poland cover about 17% of all forested areas, and their share increases steadily. The average area of private forest in Poland is about 1 hectare. It is owned by a farmer, who works in it for at most several days a year, mainly performing timber harvesting. The aim of the study was to show the real state of work safety at the process of timber harvesting in the private forests. The study involved formal entitlements (licenses), equipment of the lumberjacks and technique of their work. The study analyses 14 forest workers on three sites: Ryki and Garwolin (central Poland) and Nowogród (eastern Poland). The results show a sad picture, far different from that prevailing in the State Forests. None of the investigated persons had any formal entitlements to operate the chainsaw. Only one employee had a helmet and trousers with cut protection pads. The lumberjacks were generally equipped with petrol chainsaws and axes. In most cases, they did not have any other auxiliary equipment. Operation technique used to perform tree felling, delimbing and crosscutting in many cases was only the result of observations of other (equally incorrectly trained) workers. The risk of an accident in such cases was very large. The reason for this is mainly the high cost of training and the lack of 'climate of work safety' in the media that are available free of charge. It is necessary to take immediate and effective action to limit such a risk.

    Opis:
    The work of woodcutter is considered to be hard and dangerous. This job requires not only knowledge, but also skills. Experience is considered one of the most important factors affecting the safety of the chain saw operations. The objective of the study was to analyse the effect of experience on the performance of woodcutters. The research was carried out in Chojnów Forest District (central Poland) and included three woodcutters with different level of experience: A – inexperienced person (1.5 years of work), B – average experience (15 years of work), C – extensive experience (22 years of work). We analyzed the quality of the felling operations carried out in a Scots pine stand studying the following parameters: width of the hinge, height of the safety threshold and height of the stump. Woodcutter A made a lot of mistakes and his work was characterized by the high risk of an accident. Woodcutters B and C seem to have worked safer, but woodcutter C in most cases did not leave the safety threshold of the required height. The decisive factor in safety has been and will remain the quality of the lumberjacks training and enforcing it during professional examinations. High quality of trainings is of crucial importance, especially for less experienced woodcutters.

    The article presents the assessment of occupational safety in Polish forestry in the period of 2009−2016. The basic criteria for analysis of accident rate were based on the form of the statistical card of accident at work. The research analysed the data about accidents at work published by the Central Statistical Office in Poland. The aim of the research was: (i) to determine the variability of the number of people injured in total accidents, in serious accidents, and in fatal accidents, number of people employed, and number of days of incapacity to work caused by accidents; (ii) to check the relationships between the cause of the accident and the year of its occurrence, between the age of the injured and the number of accidents, between the work seniority of the injured and the number of accidents, and finally (iii) to determine the value and volatility of total accident rate per 1,000 employees, the rate of serious accidents per 100,000 employed, the rate of fatalities per 100,000 employed, accident severity rate per 1 injured as well as accident risk indicator per 1 employee. The most important cause of accidents at work in forestry was incorrect employee behavior (57.9%). The dominant events causing injury in forestry were impact by the object in motion and collision with/impact on a stationary object (26.7 and 22.6%, respectively). The most common accidents at work in forestry concern employees with work seniority in the field of over 16 years and less than a year (30.6 and 23.23%, respectively), people aged 30−39 and 40−49 (24.55 and 24.52%, respectively). The value of total accident rate in forestry shows a decreasing trend in 2011−2016 (–20.5%). The rate of serious and fatal accidents alternately increases and decreases. Similarly to the value of the severity of accidents, no trends were found. For the accident risk indicator a declining trend was observed in 2012−2016 (–19.3%).
