Opis:
The article is a comparative study of the forests of the city of Poznań and the State Forests in Poland concerning functions of forests and forestry management (recreational development, economic division, harvest cutting, fellings, renewals, afforestation and the type of the forest management plan). The study objective is to demonstrate and analyse the basic differences in the function and management method between urban and state forests. In Poland 77.3% of forests are administrated by the State Forests National Forest Holding, while the urban forests constitute only by 0.2% of all Polish forests. They differ not only in terms of ownership and participation, but also in the species and age structure of the stands, their functions and principles of forest management. There is no appropriate instructions concerning the principles of the management in urban forests, whereas this problem does not appear in the State Forests. However, irrespective to the owner, a common definition of 'forest' is included in the Forest Act. Regulations relating to forest management in the forests of the city of Poznań are a reflection of the expectations of society that urban forests are for residents of the city, primarily a place to satisfy their needs of rest and recreation. It was the reason for adapting the principles of forest management. In contrast, forests managed by the State Forests are governed by completely different rules and perspective on forest. It results in a different structure of forest functions, the occupied area and legal requirements concerning this group of Polish forests. Foresters from the State Forests conducting forest management have clearly defined rules that are missing for other Polish urban forests. Excluding city of Poznań that is a very good example that one can meet the expectations of the foresters of urban forests and offer guidance on forest management, taking into consideration the specificities of urban forests and the expectations of society.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the soils from the Old Town in Szczecin (NW Poland) as a potential forest habitat using the Forest Soil Trophism Index (ITGL). For this purpose, six drillings were made, from which the samples of anthropogenic materials were taken. The method of soil material collection for the study did not allow the determination of bulk density required to calculate Soil Trophic Index – the indicator currently used in forest science. The methods commonly used in the soil sciences were used to determine the following properties of the soil samples: texture, pH in H2O, pH in KCl, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon content, total nitrogen content, base capacity (BC) and total content of Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Cu and Hg. It was found that the soils from the Old Town in Szczecin were alkaline and contained higher amounts of salts and heavy metals (especially Pb and Zn) than natural soils. The degradation degree of these soils was not significantly enough to prevent the succession of vegetation when anthropic pressure ceased. The ITGL values were high, in the range of 38.9−44.5, because of the presence of organic carbon in whole soil profile, which was also rich in nitrogen, high values of pH in H2O and base capacity. The ITGL values indicated the hypertrophic character of soil materials and potential habitat of the fresh broadleaved forest. After the colonization of tested area by pioneer species of trees, one expects the dominance of beech, oak, maple and linden, i.e. species frequently occurring in the immediate vicinity and at the same time the species constituting of potential vegetation for the Baltic Natural−Forest Province.

Opis:
Urban river valleys are exposed to strong anthropogenic pressure, but despite these distortions they provide important habitats in urban areas. Not embanked forests are particularly valuable in urban river valleys as they represent fragments of natural vegetation in a highly changed environment. The study assesses the flora and structure of forest communities in a riparian urban forest complex that is under the direct influence of river water. Las Pilczycki Forest in Wrocław (SW Poland) is such a riparian forest island. We analysed the species richness and composition in terms of the phytocoenoses variability and their syntaxonomic classification. We also investigated if the vegetation can indicate a spatial differentiation in habitat conditions. Floristic and phytosociological data were collected from 70 circular plots (100 m&suo2; each) located in a grid. A total of 81 species were recorded, with a mean of 21 species per plot. Most frequent were: Acer campestre, Acer platanoides, Anemone nemorosa, Ficaria verna, Fraxinus excelsior, Galium aparine, Geum urbanum, Impatiens parviflora and Sambucus nigra. In biological spectrum the most numerous were hemicryptophytes, megaphanerophytes and geophytes. The number of alien species was minor (9% of the flora). The most frequent anthropophyte was Impatiens parviflora. Soil moisture, acidity and fertility indices exhibited spatial correlations and they were higher in the western part of the forest. The moisture index was also higher in the northern part. Species richness ranged from 13 to 32 (with a mean of 21 species). Two forms of Ficario−Ulmetum minoris were identified: with Galanthus nivalis and with Tilia cordata. The first was a well−structured riparian community, while the latter one represented the drained floodplain forest. Vegetation units are spatially separated, in the western part of the forest prevails form with Galanthus nivalis, while in the east – with Tilia cordata. In isolated alluvial forests of urban area local site conditions are crucial for the vegetation patches, because of the distortion of river valleys. The absence of flood embankments is not a sufficient condition for maintaining proper structure of riparian forests.
