    Opis:
    The conditions of using concentric sample plots in a successive inventory were researched. New definitions of ‘ingrowth' and ‘overgrowth' were introduced. As there is a possibility that sample plots could be located at stand edges, a new method POW_K of converting data from concentric plots was developed. The calculation results using this method were compared with the results obtained by the traditional method WSP. Two variants of obtaining inventory results for the whole forest district were taken into consideration – with and without stratification. Due to the value of mean errors of assessment of significant characteristics – volume and current periodic volume increment – the WSP method turned to be better – particularly in the variant with stratification. However, this method cannot be applied for utilizing the results of measurements of edge plots.

    The paper presents general assumptions for and preliminary results (after two years of measurements and observations) of the large−scale forest inventory performed in the country for all ownership categories since 2005. The results of the large−scale forest inventory in Poland should be the basis for a bank of data on forest resources and forest condition that will be an important module in a planning and forecasting system in Polish forestry.

    Opis:
    This paper addresses the question of whether or not and to which extent two common tree species mixtures (Norway spruce – European beech; sessile and pedunculate oak – European beech) vary in volume growth from their monocultures. To this end, the results from selected long−term experimental plots located in Germany, Poland and Switzerland, with many of them under survey since the 1890's, were employed. We found than on average both type of mixtures exceeded volume growth in pure stands by almost 30%. The analysis at the species level showed than only a Norway spruce response to mixture was neutral on average, while other tree species were benefitted by mixture. An empirical derived model for mixed stand of oak and European beech disclosed that the interaction can range from facilitation and overyielding on poor sites, through the neutral response under mesotrophic conditions, up to underyielding on fertile sites triggered by competition.

    Opis:
    In the paper, an assessment of tree population dynamics in the old−growth stands of the managed part of the Białowieża Forest is presented. Data from five permanent sample plots with a total size of 9.3 ha and six inventories that cover the period 1949−2006, were used. Depending on the dynamic status, determined on the basis of changes in a number of individuals per hectare, basal area and quadratic mean diameter, three major groups of tree species were distinguished: 1) an increasing group, containing only hornbeam and lime; 2) a stable group, involving alder and spruce and 3) a declining group consisting of oak, ash, maple, pine, birch, elm and aspen.

    An assessment of the current dynamic status of tree species occurring in the Strict Reserve of the Białowieża National Park is presented. On the basis of long−term trends and analysis of large−scale inventory data, the three major groups of trees are distinguished: 1) ‘safe’ group, containing hornbeam and lime, 2) ‘presently safe, but declining in a long−term run’ group, involving spruce, birch and alder, and 3) ‘threatened and highly threatened’ group, consisting of oak, pine, ash, maple, elm and aspen.

    Opis:
    Major results of the 45−year−long study on the dynamics of strictly protected forest stands, using 3 permanent study plots, 25×100 m each, located on a former narrow strip clear cut established in the beginning of the 20th century on the northern slopes of the Mt. Łysica (the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, Central Poland) are presented. The general development of forest stands is analysed, including change of overall density, tree mortality rate (general and by species), dynamics of basal area and average tree diameter, competitive ability as well as changing role of particular species (mainly European beech, silver fir, sycamore and Norway spruce) in formation of the general stand structure. The results of the study are compared with other investigations of similar type.
