Opis:
A few reports are concerned with sime moulds biota of anthropogenic areas. Majority of areas in the Beskid Śląski lower montane forest belt is covered by monoculture of spruce, planted in the nineteenth century. Intensive field studies were carried out during two vegetative seasons of 2006 and 2007 on the thirty hectares area of planted spruce forest. Two hundred forty four specimens were collected – single sporangium and its groups. In the early spring in 2006 and 2007 five species associated with melting snow were recognized. A total of thirty four species were recorded, among them: Fuligo septica (L.) F. H. Wigg., and Lycogala epidendrum (L.) Fr. were the most common. Ten taxa were very rare. They were noticed only once. Lamproderma echinosporum Meyl. and Stemonitopsis gracilis (G. Lister) Nann.−Bremek. were recorded for the first time in Poland.

Opis:
The paper presents temporal relationships between the breakdown of tree stand in the subalpine spruce forest and the regeneration of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L) as well as the rate of height growth of rowan stems. Rowans growing in a large gap recruited mostly from the seedling and sapling bank established under the living spruce stand before its breakdown. The rate of stem height growth was five times higher after the gap formation than under spruce stand. In spite of considerable age differences of rowans the variability in their final height after over 20 years of rapid growth was small.

Opis:
This paper addresses problems associated with the silvicultural planning in the Norway spruce mire forests (Sphagno girgensohnii−Piceetum Polak. 1962) that are characterized by an uneven−aged structure and a high degree of irregularity at small scale. Based on detailed inventory using 30 permanent circular sample plots in two control units located in the Augustów Forest (NE Poland), the BDq method was employed for determining future silvicultural activities of the current forest management cycle. The equilibrium models are based on diameter distributions and have the following parameters, depending on site conditions: B=28 m²/ha; q−factor=1.32 and D=51 cm in the case of poorer forest site type (S.−P. typicum) and 55 cm more fertile one (S.−P. thelypteridetosum).

Field research was conducted in selected pine−spruce stands of the Oleśnica Śląska Forest District (SW Poland), where in 2004 intensive mortality of trees infested by I. typographus and I. duplicatus was observed. The results show that most I. typographus beetles hibernated under the bark of sample trees (71.2%). Most I. duplicatus beetles hibernated in forest litter and soil (90.5%). In the litter and soil samples, the largest number of hibernating beetles (of both species) were observed in the close neighborhood of tree stems, within the radius of up to l m (96.2% and 94.0% respectively). The estimated number of beetles hibernating in the forest litter and soil under the canopy of a single sample tree was 383 and 61, respectively. In bark samples I. typographus hibernated only as adult (imago).

The paper presents results of the research carried out between 2004 and 2008 on the effect of ownership category on the threat to spruce stands from cambiophagous insects. The share of dead trees in the stands under individual and community ownership has been determined. It has been shown that the existing threats to spruce stands from the European bark beetle and the need for their salvation require more attention to be given to the training of forest owners in prevention and protection.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the properties of soils and topography conditions of Norway spruce forests growing on the limestone (Polysticho−Piceetum) in the upper part of the lower montane zone. The study was conducted in the Tatra Mts. (southern Poland) on six study plots reflecting the living conditions of spruce forest on limestone. On each plot the topography conditions were described, soil pits were dug and samples for laboratory analysis were collected. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, the content of C and N, particle size, the content of Ca, Mg, Na and K, exchangeable acidity, aluminum content and hydrolityc acidity. For each study plot the stand characteristics were measured (diameter at breast height and height). The Soil Trophic Index for mountain areas (SIGg) was calculated on the basis of <0.02 mm fraction content, the sum of exchangeable base cations, soil acidity and the total content of N and C organic in the humus−mineral horizon. Polysticho−Piceetum stands in the upper part of the lower zone between 1000 and 1200 m above sea level developed in the unique geomorphological and geological conditions. They covered very shallow weathered fragments of limestone or steep slopes with fine−grained scree of carbonate rocks. Rendzic Hyperskeletic Leptosols (Humic) and Calcaric Lithic Leptosol are soils typical for analysed spruce stands. Character of site was reflected in the SIGg values that ranged between 15 and 20. The moder−mull and tangel−mor humus type was found on the majority of the investigated plots. Low fertility of soil was confirmed by the site index of analysed stands (IVth and Vth class).

The research presents changes (in the period of 1991−2002) in species composition, volume, dbh structure, height and storey structure, increment value, self−thinning rate and regeneration dynamics of the primeval−type spruce forests of the upper montane zone in the Pańszczyca Valley and the Stawy Gąsiennicowe Valley in the Tatra National Park on the example of three permanent experimental plots. The stands under study (as compared with other stands in the Polish Carpathians from the similar altitudinal zone, feature high productivity expressed by the current annual volume increment value of 4.1−4.5 cu.m./ha, diverse structure and composition depending on the represented stages and phases of stand development, as well as high stand stability.

Opis:
The Białowieża Forest (BF) is in many respects an exceptional object, of a great importance for nature protection and forest management, at the international scale. The BF plays also a key role from the point of view of regional development and welfare of local community. In the last period, a big threat for multiple values of the BF has arisen, as a result of enormous bark beetle infestation, which started in 2012 and has killed 1.4 million m3 of spruce trees. In the paper, first, a brief overview of the general history of the BF and an account of long−term human impacts on its functioning and structure is provided. Next, the history of bark beetle infestations in the BF is analysed. It is shown that, in the period 1992−2007, the average volume of spruces killed by bark beetle amounted on average to 20,000 m3 of wood annually. During that period practically all dead trees were removed from the forest by means of salvation cuttings. Starting from 2008, more and more trees infested by European spruce bark beetle were left in the forest, in a result of a pressure exerted by environmental groups. In 2012, Minister of Environment decided to reduce the allowable cut, determined in forest management plans elaborated for the managed part of the BF, from 107,000 to 48,500 m3/year. This decision, along with several other regulations and restrictions, made in practice impossible to stop the development of a current bark beetle infestation, which started in 2011 and intensified during the next 6 years (solely in 2016 bark beetles killed 480,000 m3 of spruce trees). In the paper, the most important implications and consequences of the current situation are briefly summarized and discussed. A special attention is given to the problems concerning: 1) protection of Natura 2000 species and sites (endangered by bark beetle outbreak), 2) a negative influence of large amounts of spruce deadwood on forest soils, 3) threats caused by pathogenic fungi, 4) question of public safety, 5) fire hazard, and 6) economical dimension. The legal and socio−economical foundations of the functioning of Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts comprising the managed part of the BF, as well as their most important environmental and social consequences are discussed too. Among others, it is indicated that, under current conditions of the BF, human intervention plays a key role in maintaining stable and compositionally diverse woodland communities. Finally, several suggestions and recommendations are provided, aimed at, in the short term, breaking off the current bark beetle outbreak, and, in the long term, at maintaining a multifunctional character of the BF and its ability to provide all important ecosystem services on a sustainable basis.
