Opis:
The effects of pine and oak forest litter on mycorrhizal status of 2−year−old Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings grown in a bare−root nursery was investigated. The research was carried out in the nursery of Vilnius University Botanical Garden in Lithuania. Ectomycorrhizal communities were assessed by a combination of morphological and molecular techniques. Statistical analysis revealed significant effect of litter treatment on some growth parameters of seedlings: seedling height, needle dry weight and total seedling weight. The survival rate of seedlings was significantly highest for oak litter, intermediate for pine litter, and lowest for control soil. Pine seedlings were colonized by indigenous ecto− and ectendomycorrhizal symbionts. Seven mycorrhizal species (Suillus luteus, S. variegatus, Wilcoxina mikolae, Tuber sp., Tomentella sp., Cenococcum geophilum, Amphinema byssoides) were distinguished on the roots of pine seedlings as well as one ectomycorrhizal symbiont not identified to species level. In total, 6 mycorrhizal types were found in control soil, 5 in pine litter, and 8 in oak litter. Suilloid (S. luteus and S. variegatus) and Wilcoxina mycorrhizae were dominant on tested seedlings, irrespective of litter addition. Seedlings grown in untreated nursery soil were 34% colonized by W. mikolae, while suilloid mycorrhizae were dominant after litter treatment (81% in pine litter and 63% in oak litter). We may conclude that suilloid mycorrhizae are better adapted to the conditions related to litter addition than W. mikolae.

Forest bed layer developing in a tree stand plays a very important part in functioning of forest ecosystem and is of key importance in soil carbon accumulation. In two different study objects (Niedźwiady and Tuczno), 351 forest bed thickness measurements were taken in 117 pine stands of different age classes, separating them into those growing on forest lands (28 tree stands – 84 measurements) and those on post−agricultural ones (89 tree stands – 27 measurements). The above relationships were analysed, what showed a relation between the thickness of forest bed and the age of tree stand. Forest bed thickness increases together with tree stand age, both on forest and post−agricultural soils.

Opis:
Comparative studies concerning litter fall decomposition were carried out on two inpeatland dunes located in the Narew River Valley. These dunes differ from each other in plant communities growing on their areas. The aim of the studies was determination of the litter decomposition rate and the changes in its chemical composition during study period. As a result, higher content of the nitrogen and plant available forms of the phosphorus, calcium and magnesium and smaller content of the carbon and smaller C/N ratio in leaf material were found. During its decomposition, examined material has increased in carbon and nitrogen content, but the content of the plant available forms of the P, Ca and Mg and C/N ratio has reduced. In most cases, this change has proceeded faster in the deciduous stand.

Opis:
During winter time, beetle individuals were collected from soil samples taken from a Scots pine culture, an old−growth Scots pine forest, and a European larch culture and old−growth. The following research questions were put forward: (1) Does an admixture of larch in the forest stand contribute to increase in species diversity as well as the numbers of beetle individuals hibernating in the forest litter? (2) Does an admixture of larch in the forest stand result in an increased proportion of beetle species – potentially pests for the forest trees, in the carabid communities? We analyzed data with use PCA, Ward method. The first question should be answered positively. The second question should be answered negatively. The analyses of beetle fauna overwintering in the forest litter as carried out in this paper confirmed the purposefulness of larch introduction as an admixture in pine stands in Lithuania.

Opis:
The assemblages of Coleoptera have been examined in the managed and reserved mature pine forests of Lithuania since 1997. Beetles have been sampled from the forest litter using sieves. The present study is based on the data of 20 litter samples (10 samples per each stand) taken in the period from October 2013 to February 2014. Each sample was compiled of 5 smaller ones taking all litter (up to mineral layer of the soil) from 0.04 m2 plot. During the study a total 450 adults representing 69 species of beetles was discovered. Both the average number of species and the number of individuals were found to be higher in the samples taken in reserved forest and made 10.7±1.4 and 27.2±4.9, whereas in managed forest they made 9.7±1.1 and 17.8±3.4, but the differences were not statistically significant. The proportions of phytophagous, mecetobionts and saprophagous were also bigger in reserved forest: 9.5±2.0, 7.8±2.2, 3.1±1.0 than those in the managed forest, where these groups consisted of 8.0±1.8, 4.9±1.7 and 2.8±1.6 percent of the total number of individuals in the sample, respectively. The opposite proportions were detected for zoophages, which were more ambiguous in the managed forest and were by 76.0±2.5 higher than those in the reserved forest 72.8±3.2. These differences were not statistically significant. A non−metric multidimensional scale (NMDS) using Bray−Curtis similarity matrix indicated low differences of the Coleoptera assemblages between investigated sites (final stress=0.22). The analysis using RDA showed some differences between Coleoptera assemblages inhabiting reserved forest (R) and managed forest (D), which were correlated with proportions of humified mortmass (+0.88) and biomass of moss (–0.63 and –0.71). The dissimilarity index calculated using the algorithm SIMPER, was quite high (71%), but the obtained results showed a relatively low diversity of beetle assemblages in both forests. It means that the process of transformation of the managed forest into reserve is very slow, most likely due to the fact that restoration of the microhabitats is particularly slow. Low differentiation of Coleoptera assemblages dwelling in litter is associated with low dispersal power of most coleopteran species. Thus, the establishment of new reserves in old growth pine forests can not stimulate fast increase of specific beetle diversity mainly because the regenerative processes of microhabitats seem to be extremely slow. The specific diversity of beetle assemblages was slightly higher in the reserved forests, but it was not confirmed statistically. In comparison with the managed old growth pine forest the period of fifteen years of reservation of old growth pine forest has only a very low effect on specific diversity and ecological specialization of the beetles.

Opis:
The resilience of forest ecosystems to climate changes such as elevated temperature and frequent drought episodes, strongly depends on how the soil subsystems and its inhabitants responds to these perturbation. The epigeic soil Collembola communities of mature mixed deciduous forest and adjacent young plantation on moderately humid soil were compared in two consecutive years, out of which the second one was marked by significant deficiency of precipitation in growing− −season. The study plots were established on the area of experimental forests of Warsaw University of Life Science−SGGW in Rogów (central Poland). The objectives of the study was to assess the sensitivity of forest Collembola communities to drought stress and to check if the reaction depends on stand age. We also aimed to test if an indicator species of climate changes can be appointed. The results showed that three months drought episode had negative impact on forest Collembola communities of mature stands, while communities of young plantation were not affected. The reduction of total abundance of Collembola and clear changes in communities structure in mature stand was detected in the year of lower precipitation. The Collembola communities of young plantation were also significantly transformed, but in result of clear cutting and soil preparation. Therefore, the successional changes were the most evident process in these communities and there were no signs of drought influence. Among the most numerous species in Collembola communities of mature forest Isotomiella minor was appointed as an indicator of drought, because its abundance was drastically reduced in the year of lower precipitation. The small number of specimen of this species in young plantation may also prove its sensitivity to deficiency of humidity in soil. The significantly negative response to drought episode was documented also for Psuedosinella horaki, Micraphorura absoloni and Megalothorax minimus. Our study provided strong evidence that the drought, which lasted only three months, had a detrimental effect on forest Collembola commu− nities.

Opis:
Effect of a weak defoliation by the larvae of the lappet moth and nun moth on chemical composition of needles, litter and soil in the 33−years old Scots pine stands was studied. The four variants were tested: I – larvae feeding, litterfall with frass and damaged needles, II – larvae feeding, but litterfall excluded (collected), III – no larvae, litterfall from the variant II spilled around trees, IV (untreated) – no larvae, litterfall without frass and damaged needles. No changes in chemical composition of litter and soil after two years of weak spring defoliation were found. However, there was a significant decrease of soluble carbohydrates and 5 sesquiterpenes as well as an increase of total monoterpenes in needles of trees in the variant II in comparison to other variants. All of those compounds are carbon−based, thus trees probably only relocated this element to a higher production of monoterpenes to make needles less attractive as a food source.
