The aim of the experiment was to compare the rehabilitating effect of three factors that may improve the degraded and very poor soils formed from loose sands: dolomite liming, use of a multi−component fertilizer with delayed action (Silvamix W) and temporary introduction of an admixture Alnus incana into the Pinus sylvestris plantation. The results of the factorial experiment after 9 years indicate that the soils on which the experiment was established cannot be afforested without prior rehabilitation treatments. The activity of dolomite was most effective while of Silvamix − weaker. Alder survived in the plantation composition only when used in combination with dolomite fertilization, then its rehabilitating effect was apparent. Rehabilitation relying on the use of dolomite at a rate of 2 t/ha in combination with a 50% admixture of alder in the pine plantation is recommended to be used in practice.

The main purpose of the study was to compare carabid beetles assemblages from recultivated and spontaneously regenerated forest of post−industrial areas. The survey was conducted in southern part of Poland in three environmental types: recultivated (afforested) dumping grounds, spontaneously re−vegetated dumping grounds and reference forests. In total, 2036 specimen belonging to 36 Carabidae species were collected. GLM analysis indicated that carabids assemblages structures (abundance, species richness, Fisher alpha index, general biomass and mean individual biomass) decreased on recultivated dumping grounds in comparison to areas with spontaneous succession and reference forest. Analysis of redundancy showed a wide variety of species composition and life traits parameters in respect to environmental types. SIMPER analysis showed that species characteristic for recultivated dumping grounds included e.g. Harpalus rufipes and Calathus erratus (small body size and herbivore strategy of feeding). C. erratus was the most dominant on spontaneously regenerated dumping grounds, while species typical for forest ecosystems included representatives of Carabus and Pterostichus sp. (brachypterous large or medium size predators).

The aim of the study is to present – in the perspective of up to 2030 – plans about deforestation in the area administered by the State Forests, formulated at the level of communes and judged on the level of provinces (voivodeships), as well as plans for land reclamation into forests, formulated at the level of counties. The data was collected in 2013−2014 in a survey, which included the following groups of respondents: mayors of all rural and urban−rural communes, heads of all rural counties and marshals of provinces. According to information provided by 34.4% of communes, it is planned to cease the production on at least 517.1 hectares of forests, located in 64 forest districts. In relation to requests for deforestation, marshals of provinces presented various approach to their assessment, but always within the limits of applicable law. On the other hand, according to the data provided by 57.3% of counties, land reclamation into forests is planned to reach at least 498 hectares in 57 forest districts. Deforestation and forest reclamation affect both the landscape and the level of forest cover of the country. The results show a greater concern of commune heads about deforestation than it is in the case of heads of counties about land reclamation into forests. The balance in these activities proportion would be at least a positive natural, economic and social achievement. The processes of deforestation, afforestation, forest management and land restoration into forests – directly affecting the quality of the landscape – are important for assessing the implementation of the European Landscape Convention in Poland. Taking into account the current level of afforestation in Poland, it is unlikely to achieve the forest cover of 33% by 2050. Therefore, it is important to control the size of deforestation and to increase the scope and pace of land reclamation into forests.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine quality of wood of 40−year old poplar cultivars introduced onto the external spoil dump of the Bełchatów Field and subjected to various reclamation systems. The research was carried out on the 1/78 trial plot located on the northern slope of the external spoil dump of the Bełchatów Field (central Poland). The dump was the result of the rock (predominantly sand) overlay storage accompanying lignite deposit. On the trial plot two blocks were established: one called ‘Humus’ where sandy sediments were covered with approximately 20−centimeter layer of fertile soil, and the other named ‘Piasek’ (sand) with only sandy sediments. To set up the experiment 9 poplar varieties were used (I−214, Robusta, Gerlica, H−194, Grandis, Oxford, Androscoggin, Geneva, H−275). Their wood quality was assessed in 2017, 40 years after their introduction on the spoil dump. The results indicate that poplars growing in the ‘Humus’ variant were characterised by higher volume in comparison to wood of poplars from the ‘Piasek’ variant. The latter however had a larger share of better wood quality classes (WB, WC). The results also showed that wood classification of all investigated varieties were significantly influenced by curvature in the case of the ‘Humus’ variant and knots in the ‘Piasek’ one. The influence of other wood defects such as galls, grain slope, multiple pith and knobs was insignificant. In order to obtain the higher volume of poplar raw material the reclamation treatments should be carried out on afforested areas with fertile outer layer whereas the better quality raw material can be obtained on less fertile sediments.

The research was conducted on the external spoil heap of the 'Piaseczno' Sulphur Mine (southern Poland). This paper aimed to determine the quality of wood in 40−year−old Scots pine trees planted onto the external spoil heap of the mine, in the scope of forest reclamation, depending on the soil substrate and employed reclamation treatments. The investigations were carried out at one−are circular trial plots. A total number of 17 study plots was established, located on: Quaternary loose sands (PL), mixed Quaternary sands and Tertiary Krakowieckie clays (PI), and mixed Quaternary sands and Tertiary clays after an intense initial fertilisation (PIN). Measurements performed at the study plots included determination of diameter at breast height of every tree with a diameter ≥7 cm and height of every tree. We classified the wood of standing trees, including a specification of class or quality and dimension group of the butt−end part of the trunk, identifying types and variants of defects that determined the results of quality classification of raw wood. We found significant differences in trees dimensions between soil substrates. No significant difference was found for fertilised substrates, therefore it may be assumed that fertilising of more fertile soils was an unnecessary treatment. The quality of pine wood was mostly affected by knots and curvatures. An impact of knots on the results of wood classification increased with fertility of soil substrate. With regard to curvatures, the opposite trend was recorded. The frequency of occurrence of the above−mentioned defects was determined not only by the habitat type, but also by the manner of forest management. To reduce the frequency of occurrence of the defects in question in the reclaimed areas, an appropriate closure of stands should be maintained and adequate tending treatments should be performed competently and skilfully, as this is done in commercial stands.

The paper presents fractional composition and optical properties of the soil organic matter (SOM) developed on afforested dumping ground of the sulphur strip mine in Piaseczno near Tarnobrzeg (southern Poland). Research was designed for different soil−substrates and trees species. Soil−substrate type has the major impact on SOM characteristics at current stage of soil development. Black alder characterized with the strongest influence on SOM quality among species introduced on the dumping ground.

Paper presents the results of research concerning the influence of properties of initial post−mine soils on the growth of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) at a former sand excavation pit of the ‘Szczakowa’ Sand Mine (southern Poland) reclaimed 30 years ago. The growth parameters (d.b.h and mean height) depended on the properties of the initial soils at the reclaimed site, particularly on the grain size. The results obtained confirm the usefulness of this tree species for the afforestation of reclaimed former sand excavation sites in their parts built of sand deposits with larger admixtures of silt.

The paper presents the results of the research on tree diameter structure in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands growing on mine dumps and pits reclaimed for forestry. The diameter structure of stands was characterised using statistical concentration and dispersion measures and compared with five theoretical distributions: beta, gamma, logarithmic−normal, normal and Weibull's. The studies were conducted in eight pine stands in age classes I (below 20) and II (21−40) age classes growing on the rehabilitated areas of the Bełchatów, Piaseczno, Szczakowa and Smolnica mines.

Opis:
The paper presents the assessment of growth parameters and the impact of pure stands of Scots pine, European larch, common birch and black alder on the reaction and chemical properties of the initial soils developed on the reclaimed sand pit ‘Szczakowa’ (southern Poland). Pine, larch and birch stands were characterized by good growth parameters, which confirms high adaptability of these species to post−mining sites. The black alder was characterized by worse growth parameters. The organic horizon (Olf) under conifers (pine and larch) were characterized by higher mass and lower pH than under deciduous species (birch and larch). The alder litter contained more N, K and Mg compared to other tree species. In the Ain initial horizon, the modifying effect of tree species was only detected in the case of black alder by higher exchange acidity and cation exchange capacity (CEC), higher content of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total N, and a lower C:N ratio, compared to soils under influence of other species. The research confirms that the selection of species composition for afforestation is an important factor affecting the soil−forming processes on reclaimed sand pit. In particular, the alder was characterized by beneficial effects on soil properties, which confirms its usefulness as a phytomeliorative species.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the abundance of soil microbiome and enzymatic activity in a control soil sample and in samples with post−mining sediment containing high concentrations of arsenic and some trace elements. The samples were collected under two−year−old seedlings of Norway maple (Acer plantanoides L.) and small−leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.), which came from the Pniewy Forest District (western Poland). Optical emission spectrometry with excitation in plasma induced by the Agilent 5110 ICP−OES spectrometer was applied to analyse the concentration of arsenic and other heavy metals in the substrates and plant material. Before analysis the samples were mineralised with concentrated (65%) nitric acid (V). The count of selected groups of soil microorganisms was measured with the serial dilution method by Koch. The microbiome was measured on selective media. The activity of dehydrogenases as well as acid and alkaline phosphatase was measured spectrophotometrically. The soil and sediment on which the seedlings grew were characterised by the following physicochemical parameters: soil texture (control – loamy sand, sediment – silt), pH (control – 5.85−5.92, sediment – 7.13−7.43), the content of phosphorus (control – 117−121 mg/kg, sediment – 38−46 mg/kg), potassium (control – 6.97−7.03 mg/kg, sediment – 57−61 mg/kg), nitrogen (control – 0.53−0.65 mg/kg, sediment – 1.7−2.1 mg/kg) and total carbon (control – 9.4−10.2 g/kg, sediment – 54.2−57.2 g/kg). The samples contained: control – 0.24 mg/kg, sediment – 282 mg/kg of Astotal, control – below the detection limit, sediment – 1,766 and 16,220 mg/kg of As(III) and (V) respectively. The counts of the microorganisms were lower (103−105) than in typical arable soils (105−109). The counts of bacteria and actinobacteria under the lime seedlings in the control were greater than in the sediment, whereas the counts of moulds were roughly identical. The counts of bacteria and moulds in the sediments under the maple seedlings were greater than in the control, whereas the counts of actinobacteria were roughly identical. The sediments under both species exhibited higher alkaline and acid phosphatase activity than the control soil sample. Only dehydrogenases exhibited higher activity in the control soil under both tree seedlings.
