Opis:
The aim of this study was to present a method for assessing the connectivity of forest areas and the rules for generalisation of forest patches as the spatial planning units. The analyses were carried out for the entire area of Poland. Topographic maps (vector data) as well as software for spatial analysis (QGiS) and database analyses were used. Method of generalisation of forest patches involved two stages. The first one included separation of continuous forest areas consisting in the identification of patches located at a maximum distance of 50 m from each other. Patches generalised into continues forest areas were distributed among eight area classes: over 50 000 ha, 25 000,1−50 000 ha, 500,1−25 000 ha, 200,1−500 ha, 25,1−200 ha, 5,1−25 ha, 0,6−5,0 ha and up to 0,5 ha. The other step included separation of isolated continuous forest patches, which means patches that were out of the range of continuous forest areas in higher area classes. Ranges of continuous forest areas were calculated using 500 m buffer. Results of this study shows that forest patches cover 33,9% of Polish land area. Methods used in this study allowed to reduce input number of patches (764,850) by over 50% up to 338,682 ones. Generalisation of data caused changes in the landscape metrics: mean patch size more than doubled, patch density decreased by more than half, and the largest patch index increased very strongly (forty five times). Based on the literature review and results obtained in this research, it was found that in Poland afforestation intended to conservation of specialized forest species should focus on creating ecological corridors between distinguished forest patches (continuous forest areas). With the current forest cover and forest spatial structure in Poland, afforestation intended to conservation of specialized forest species by reducing edge effect in existing forest patches remains also important, but rather is a secondary need.

Opis:
The Polish forest gap trials report oaks height in the middle of a gap or average height of all oaks in the gap. To decide when the shelter of surrounding old trees in no longer needed and old trees between gaps can be cut, a forester should have knowledge how oaks grow in the peripheral part of gaps. In the experiment height of planted oaks in the age from 5 to 11 years growing in 15 are gaps on fresh mixed broad−leaved forest site was measured. The smallest difference in height of oaks growing in the middle and in the peripheral part of gaps was observed for 5−year−old oaks. The difference became bigger as oaks became older. For oaks older than 8 years, saplings in the peripheral parts are on average 40% lower than those in the central part. The height of older oaks in the middle and in the southern periphery of gap was less differentiated than of oaks growing in northern, eastern and western peripheral parts. Large differences in height can provoke oaks to develop bad stem forms (e.g. forked, thick branched). Special care should be taken during pre−commercial thinning to eliminate oaks with bad stems in the peripheral parts of gaps.

Opis:
Optimisation of patch selective cutting, especially the interaction between size and shape of artificial gaps and biotic factors influencing tree regeneration, is rather sparsely documented in Polish silvicultural textbooks. The removal of trees can increase availability of nutrients in artificial gaps. Establishment of root gaps and vigorous development of vegetative cover (weeds) is another consequence. This paper presents review of investigations that describe interactions between mentioned factors influencing regeneration growth and parameters of gaps. The special attention is paid to potential application of cited results in practical silviculture.

Opis:
The study presents spatial variation in the height of a 12−year−old oak regeneration in the north−south and east−west gradients in the cut patches with a similar width (28 m) but differing in length (33−70 m), with the longer side facing east−west direction. A comparison of the cut patches with an area of 7, 11 and 16 ares showed that oaks in large patches were on average 25% higher than in small patches and the diversity of trees in the WE and NS gradients depended on the size of the patch. In each case, the lowest trees occurred in the zone of strong root competition of shelterwood, whose influence decreased with the enlargement of the cut patches. The results of the study show that the establishment of large (15−20 ares) elliptical or rectangular patches whose area can be expanded by lengthening the axis in the east−west direction is the recommended method of pedunculate oak renewal in forest practice.

Opis:
The influence of artificial elliptical gaps (size 15 and 20 are) on height of young (6 and 10 year old) planted pedunculate oaks was investigated on fresh mixed−coniferous and fresh mixed−broadleaved forest site types. For each combination of age, site type and gap size four gaps were sampled. In each gap, 3 circular sampling plots of 3 m radius were placed in northern, central and southern part of gap. The analysis were carried out separately for 6− and 10−year−old oaks and proved that gap size did not have an influence on height of younger and older oaks. In both cases, site type influence had statistical importance, but the practical silvicultural importance of this difference was only for older oaks. The position within gap was not important for growth of younger oaks, but had an influence on the height of older ones in different manner in different site conditions. The mean height of older oaks growing in more fertile conditions had maximum value in the centre of artificial gaps and diminished towards the periphery. On less fertile site types older oaks were the lowest in the northern position and their height in southern and central part of gaps was comparable.

Opis:
The paper presents the study on the height of 10−12−year−old pedunculate oak regeneration in clear−cut gaps in three fertility variants: mezotrophic of poorer productivity (fresh mixed coniferous forest – BMśw), mezotrophic of higher productivity (fresh mixed deciduous forest – LMśw) and eutrophic (fresh deciduous forest – Lśw). BMśw and LMśw were represented by two locations: Gostynin (G) and Parczew (P), while Lśw – by one: Czarna Białostocka (CzB). We analysed the variation of oak height in the patches along the north−south (N−S) and east−west (E−W) gap axes. In each location 3−5 gaps were selected and measurements taken on three transects along the N−S axis located in the western (W), central (C) and eastern (E) part. Significant differences in oak height were found along the N−S axis. Oaks in the BMśw and LMśw habitats in the south−central part, and those in the Lśw habitat in the centre−northern part of the patch were the highest. The height growth of oaks on sandy soils (BMśw, LMśw) was found to be limited by moisture deficit, while on loamy soils (Lśw) – by light deficiency. The differences in oak height along the E−W axis were smaller and less apparent, indicating a tendency towards the reduction of their height growth in the central part of the gap.

Opis:
The research was conducted in three old−growth forests consisted of silver fir Abies alba Mill., European beech Fagus sylvatica L., and Norway spruce Picea abies Karst. located in the southern part of Poland (Żarnówka and Oszast) and the south−eastern Bosnia and Hercegovina (Perućica). The aim of the study was to compare basic stand characteristics and spatial heterogeneity in terms of variation in stand basal area and vertical structure. In each research area, small sample plots (0.015 ha) were localised in a regular 20×20 m grid covering approximately 10 ha. In each sample plot the diameter at breast height (d1.37 cm) and species of all live trees were recorded. For each plot the basal area of live trees and an index of structural diversification were determined. As a measure of structural diversification, the simple variance in tree height was computed and scaled through comparison with a hypothetical variance of the uniform distribution. The spatial patterns of basal area and structural diversification were tested with paired−plot approach. In addition, simulation techniques were used to model variation in the basal area of live trees dependent on spatial scale. The Carpathian and Dinaric stands considerably differed in basal area (ranging from 36.1 to 65.2 m2/ha) and volume (varying from 522 to 1176 m3/ha), but all of them had diameter distributions proximate to a negative exponential model. The basal area recorded on the 0.015 ha plots had a very similar pattern of variation, which could be generalised as a truncated normal distribution. The distribution of the structural diversification index was different and resembled an uniform (Perućica) or a bimodal distribution with modal values at its extremes (Oszast and Żarnówka). However, in the spatial scales above 1,000 m2 the index distri− bution become similar to a normal (Oszast) or a truncated normal (Perućica and Żarnówka) ones with high mean values, indicating the predominance of complex vertical structures. In general, the spatial variability in basal area and structural diversification of live trees tended to be random. These results suggest that the patch−mosaic assumption being fundamental for the developmental cycle hypothesis is inapplicable to the studied primeval forests. Regardless of differences in geographic location and site conditions, the studied stands show a similar spatial pattern of structural heterogeneity, suggesting a close resemblance of disturbance regimes driving its dynamics.
