Opis:
The paper presents the issue of conservation of species diversity of the Białowieża Forest in the context of both natural and human−related disturbances. These disturbances, in the authors’ opinion, were the main factor that shaped the unique species diversity of this area. Examples of natural disturbances occurring in the Białowieża Forest include the impact of wind, insect outbreaks and, to a lesser extent, fires. On the other hand anthropogenic disturbances are related to various forms of forest use, which historically took place here, i.e. grazing by domestic animals, beekeeping, charcoal production, and recently also forest management. Currently, in the situation of rarity and unpredictability of natural disturbances, as well as due to a significant decrease in human impact on forests of the Białowieża Forest, there is a risk of decrease of biodiversity, which is related to the process of natural succession, homogenization of the forest and the decline of favourable habitats for the development of some organisms. This particularly applies to the so−called ‘open forest’ species that are dependent on sunny places in forests. Historically these species found favourable conditions in the Białowieża Forest in many sites, where traditional forms of forest use took place, but also in areas used for traditional forest management. At present, it is necessary to adapt forest management on the one hand and nature conservation on the other, in order to meet the requirements of diverse groups of organisms, both requiring passive as well as active methods of conservation. The authors postulate the necessity of introducing a diverse conservation strategy in the Białowieża Forest.

The future capercaillie protection programmes should concentrate on the improvement of the capercaillie habitat structure, creation of ecological corridors between isolated habitats and reduction of predation pressure. International cooperation are an indispensable elements of efficient protection of capercaillie. Scientific research on capercaillie with special emphasis put on genetics, development of monitoring programmes, improvement of forest management methods are of the highest importance. It is essential to develop a comprehensive programme for reintroduction protection in accordance with IUCN directives.

Opis:
The paper presents the project of a crevice box designed especially for Western barbastelle Barbastelle barbastellus bats. Barbastelle is endangered species of bat protected throughout the Europe and included in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive. In many forest areas of Natura 2000 Barbastelle is official subject to protection, which imposes certain obligations on the area’s administrator or landowner. Western Barbastelle in forests uses atypical roosts (comparing to most other bats), which are cracks of trunks and crevices under the bark of trees, especially deciduous trees. For this reason, it is most often found in old deciduous forests abounding in such potential shelters. As an endangered species, it often requires active protection, and bat−boxes used so far are not settled by Barbastelles because they do not correspond to their ecological preferences. For this reason, it was necessary to develop a project of boxes that would correspond to the pref− erences of this species and will be settled by these bats. Typical bat−boxes are the equivalent of tree hollows carved by woodpeckers, while crevice boxes to a greater extent than previous solutions imitate natural cracks in tree trunks. Similar boxes were successfully introduced in the United Kingdom by Greenaway and Hill [2004], and then tested on a larger scale in forests in Poland by Rachwald i in. [2018]. Boxes were successfully occupied by individual bats and by breeding colonies, which does not happen in bat boxes with a traditional construction. The paper contains a concise description of the obtained so−far results of colonization bat−boxes by Barbastelle and a sketch of the newly redesigned box with detailed dimensions (fig. 2). Based on the positive results of experiments with the colonization of this type of boxes, it is proposed to use these boxes as an at least temporary solution for the active protection of Barbastelles in forests wherever there is a shortage of natural shelters.

Opis:
The number of capercaillie in its entire range of distribution is declining. Its population n Europe (without Russia) amounts to about 580 thousand individuals including 500 thousand in Scandinavia. In Poland, 480−600 capercaillies live in 4 isolated populations. The major reason of the declining abundances of capercaillie can be seen in altered forest biotopes and their isolated distribution, widespread predation, noisy behaviour of people, disturbances in population structure, or extinction of isolated populations. Protective measures in the European countries concentrate on active protection of natural populations, capercaillie restoration and research−based education, computer simulations of the survival of this species and a long−term monitoring system. The projects for restoration of domesticated birds developed in the Czech Republic and Germany appeared unsuccessful. The mortality of released individuals was greater than 90%. Poland lacks both an integrated research programme and a long−term monitoring of capercaillie. Legal regulations in force and national directives concerning the principles of capercaillie protection are not uniformly and efficiently implemented in practice. Currently, breeding of birds for reintroduction is held in the Leżajsk and Wisła Forest Districts.

Opis:
The Fomitopsis officinalis is the fungus remaining under strict protection since 1983. It is on the Red List of threatened fungi in Poland in the category of species endangered by extinction (E). It is also in the group of 33 threatened species proposed to be embraced by species protection at European level. All the existing localities of this species in Poland are in the area of its historical occurrence in the territory of the Świętokrzyskie and Mazowieckie provinces. In 2010, the presence of F. officinalis was detected in four seed trees in the managed larch forests in the neighbourhood of the ‘Ciechostowice’ Reserve (Skarżysko Forest District). Moreover, a new tree with fruiting bodies was found in each of the ‘Ciechostowice’ and ‘Modrzewina’ reserves. Recent data show that the fungus has infested 31 trees or parts of trees (trees with visible or just disappeared fruiting bodies). There is still a need to protect habitats and populations of F. officinalis using the passive and active protection methods.

Opis:
The paper presents the negative effects of passive nature protection and demonstrates that some groups of ecologists seem to still ignore these facts. The paper shows that, according to the new 'philosophy' of nature protection, there is neither a real climax biocoenosis nor the state of equilibrium in nature, and that natural succession is not in fact possible. Therefore the return to nature by creating national parks and nature reserves is not realistic. The sustainability of forests cannot be ensured by banning their access, or through their passive conservation, but by regulating the mutually interrelated biological processes, like regeneration, survival, and loss of trees and stands. The abandoning of exploiting non−renewable raw materials, like ore, sand, coal or stone deposits will undoubtedly contribute to their protection and preserve them for the generations to come. However at the same time forbidding the use of renewable forest resources will not support their protection, but will rather upset and interrupt their existence, until their final death. Only active, regulatory activity by man can save the endangered and rare species and natural ecosystems, including forests, from extinction. The common belief that sustainable existence and permanence of many plant and animal species is not possible without human support and regulation should prevail both in forestry and in modern nature protection.
