Opis:
The aim of the study was to demonstrate how the trophy quality of antlers of the red deer stags living in two large forest complexes in the Mazowsze region (central Poland) differs from those inhabiting other regions of the country. The study used the data describing the body and antlers weight of 272 stags shot in 2005−2014 in two large, separated from each other, forest complexes of Spała and Gostynin. The stags from both forest complexes do not differ from each other in body weight and antler forms. The average body weight of the stags at the age of 12 is approximately 120−140 kg. The characteristics of antler forms of the stags harvested by hunters may not reflect the actual state because of the use, in practice, of the selection criteria instead of random killing. The most frequently harvested antler forms of the selection stags in the age classes of 3−5 years and 6−8 years are regular eight−pointers and irregular twelve−pointers, respectively. However, the small sample size used and the specific rules of harvesting the older stags do not allow to characterize the antler forms of the stags older than 9 years. In the autumn−winter period, a decrease in the body weight of the rutting stags at the age of over 6 years, as well as of the young, 2−5−year−old, stags is observed. The loss in body weight in young stags is approximately 20%, while in older stags – 35%. The decrease in body weight in the autumn−winter period is not stable. The largest, representing nearly 50% of the total weight loss, was recorded after the rut. In the period between November and December even a slight increase in body weight was noted followed again by a decline by the end of the winter.

Opis:
Timber hauling from the forest, either directly to the consumer or to the place of transshipment for a rail transport, is carried out by vehicles adapted to the transport of long or short logs and medium−sized wood. In Poland, regulations restrict the total weight of a vehicle traveling on roads, which consists of the weight of the empty vehicle and the weight of the load. When transporting the wood, the variability of the species, assortments, and wood moisture content does not allow for the unambiguous determination of the weight of transported timber, which often contributes to the excessive gross vehicle weight (GVW). In the conducted study, we analyzed Scots pine wood shipments (mainly short logs of length of 3.7−5.0 m) in different seasons of the year: in January (652 shipments), in March/April (1586), in July/August (1324), and in October/November (1914). GVW was calculated, based on the weight of an empty set and a weight of the load. The weight of the load was determined in two ways. In the first one it was calculated as a difference between loaded and unloaded truck. Measurements were carried out on the stationary scales. In the other method the volume of transported wood was taken from a delivery note and multiplied by the conversion rate for Scots pine, which equals 0.74 Mg/m³. The difference between both calculation methods reached 17%. It was found that in 2016 timber loads varied greatly, ranging from 41.3 to 66.9 Mg. The average GVW for the year 2016 was 50.64 Mg and it was on the similar level as in 2009 – 51.12 Mg on average, ranging from 40.06 to 64.20 Mg.

Studies upon the individual quality of roe deer males originating from Lublin Upland and obtained during two hunting seasons (2008/2009 and 2010/2011) with diverse climatic conditions of winter revealed different weights of carcass and antlers as well as various morphometric traits of antlers (length of tines, length of front and back branches). Data from bi−factorial variance analysis taking into account the interaction between animal’s age and the obtaining date indicate that body and antlers weight variability as well as the length of the front branches are determined mainly by animal’s age and the obtaining date, while the tine length and length of the back branches are greatly affected by animal’s age.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to analyse the size and efficiency of assimilation apparatus of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestis L.) using the site index model for unthinned pine stands (Model Pinus). The size of the assimilation apparatus was regarded in terms of mass of the twigs covered with needles (Ugc) and mass of needles (Ic). It reaches maximum values at the age of 20−25 years, then dynamically decreases to the age of 50 years, stabilizes between 50 and 80 years and from the age of 85 to 120 years again shows a mild increasing trend. The maximum mass of twigs covered with needles is from 40 (BON34) to 20 (BON26) t/ha, while mass of needles – from 25 (BON34) to 13 (BON26) t/ha. The minimum weight is from 18 (BON34) to 16 (BON26) t/ha and from 13 (BON34) to 11 (BON26) t/ha, respectively. The efficiency of the assimilation apparatus determined as the dependence of the current volume increment on in the dependence on mass of twigs covered with needles (WUgc) or mass of needles (WIc) is dynamically increasing and at the age of 45 years it reaches the maximum and then shows a downward trend to the age of 120 years. At the culminating point of these features, they are similar for all site indices and range from 0.83 to 0.88 m3/t (WUgc) and from 1.23 to 1.31 m3/t (WIc).

Opis:
The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that the quality of male roe deer hunted in the Kielce region depends on the selected characteristics of the place of their earlier habitat (forest cover, soil) and the age of the individuals. As a criteria to verify that hypothesis we chose carcass weight, weight and height of the antlers and skull dimensions. Material consisted of carcasses and antlers of 1349 bucks harvested in 169 hunting districts in the Kielce region (central Poland). We found that the individual quality of male roe deer was diverse. Significant impact was found for the forest cover, diversity of soil types and age of the individuals. Roe deer with the smallest carcass weight, having significantly lighter antlers occurred in areas with the forest cover of over 40% (tab. 1). In turn, in the filed−type circuits, where the forest cover does not exceed 20%, bucks were much heavier and imposed massive antlers (fig. 1). There was also evidence that in areas where the fertile soil dominated (rendzina and chernozems) individual quality of deer was significantly better than in districts where poor fawn and rust soils predominated (fig. 2). The examined environmental factors had the greatest impact on carcass or antlers weight, as well as the dimensions of deer skulls in case of the youngest bucks and their impact decreased with age. Optimum of the individual's development in terms of carcass weight and antler falls at the age of seven. Bucks harvested in the Kielce region, in comparison to the other populations in Poland, were characterized by good individual quality and slightly subsided only to individuals from the Lublin Upland (tab. 2).

The aim of the study was to examine individual quality of red deer males occurring in the Dulowa Forest (S Poland). Carcass weight as well as form and weight of antlers were the main criteria. Analysed deer characterized with good quality of the inter−individual, as shown by the higher (or similar) average carcass and antlers weight compared to the individuals hunted in other regions. In addition high quality of the inter−individual demonstrated by the fact that 17,4% deer had antlers with a medal. The maximum average weight of antlers (7.29 kg) was observed for thirteen−years−old animals, while the culmination of carcass weight (159.8 kg) occurred for twelve−years−old individuals. Weight of the antlers was significantly correlated with age (r=0.88), carcass weight (r=0.84) and form of antlers (r=0.79).

It was found that the average carcass weight in the group of stags, does and fawns harvested during the hunting seasons of 1993/1994 to 2003/2004 was 46.46 kg, 33.66 kg and 21.22 kg, respectively. Zoometric measurements provided the basis for developing a sika deer profile. In the case of the average stag they were as follows: carcass weight – 47.37 kg, carcass length – 108.77 cm, height at sacrum – 87.05 cm, height at withers – 81.18, chest girth – 91.95 cm, while in that of the average doe: 34.46 cm, 134.96 cm, 71.83 cm, 79.13 cm and 85.09 cm, respectively. During the last ten hunting seasons the average weight of antlers was about 1.2 kg, and eight−point stags dominated in the population analyzed (approx. 50%).

Opis:
The analysis of population density indicators and hunting exploitation of brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in the Lublin Upland (eastern Poland) hunting club indicates that these parameters reached low and very low level resulting in the reduction or suspension of hunting acquisition. Analysis of body weight of obtained hares indicates that despite the low density of the species, it does not differ significantly from the value of this parameter in other regions of the country at different levels of population density. Thus, achieved results are confirmation that the population density index does not determine hare body weight. Statistically significant differences in body weight in the group of juveniles and adults regardless of gender were found, and there were no clear and statistically significant differences between males and females, both in the group of juveniles and adults (tab.). Analysis of the age and gender structure among obtained hares (fig. 2 and 3) shows a clear dominance of adult animals, both males and females. These results confirm that in spite of the low population density, the estimated possibilities of the reproductive potential are high, and the cause of a population decline and continued low density are the factors from the outside of the population.

Opis:
Wood obtained from freshly cut trees has a high moisture content and therefore its mass per volume unit is higher than the mass of dry wood. The natural drying is a simple and effective method of weight (moisture content) reduction, making a better use of the vehicle's payload, and thus reducing costs, including environmental costs. The conclusion is based on simulations and analyzes attempting to evaluate different solutions. As evidenced, the drying process of logs depends on numerous factors, which entails attempts at development of an optimal logging method, especially concerning energy wood, allowing for maximum value growth in as little time as possible. The suggestions cover various forms of logging (of whole trees, long timber), arranging (in piles, bundles), storing (in stands, by the roadside near cutting areas), and protection. Combined methods such as storing under canvas for winter only or storing in cutting areas and later in piles at the exit road also work in practice, but require more funds because their cost is determined by the number of stages composing the whole process. In case of wood, development of an optimal and simultaneously universal method used to prepare the lumber for transport and its delivery with consideration of as little environmental impact as possible is complicated. The numerous variables, some of which cannot be controlled or affected, create a considerable scientific problem as well. The authors covered in the presented literature review often stress the role of specific weather conditions accompanying an experiment or its location, the storage method, or lumber dimensions in the drying process. Storage time is perceived as equally important, but it is a derivative more or less determined by the previous variables. Previous studies of drying at the cutting area have been focused mainly on energy wood and less on industrial wood. They analysed the results of long−term storage and did not stress the potential advantages of short−term drying. Furthermore, we do not have sufficient information on species, including forest trees, which have a lower share in the volume of the logged wood. Advanced research can help establish the minimum mass (moisture content) with considerable impact on supply chain effectiveness improvement or evaluated various storing and drying methods. We reviewed reports explaining the impact of various factors on natural drying of wood, models and storage effects, and analyzing potential economic and environmental benefits.

The genetic structure of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst] of the Istebna race was studied in two populations from the Carpathian seed stands in the Malinka and Czarne Forestries. The recent provenance test results have shown a high quality of both populations. The results were compared with the genetic variation parameters calculated for the selected seed stand from the Bukowiec Forestry (compartment 149h), whose genetic structure in the progeny test for this species is considered a national standard. Five enzyme systems were analysed. The results show that the mean number of alleles per locus and the heterozygosity observed in the analysed populations are greater than those reported in the literature for other natural Norway spruce populations from the Carpathians. The heterozygosity level of the studied seed stands was higher than of the selective population of the Istebna spruce plus trees and the level of genetic diversity was similar to that of the Bukowiec seed stands. Thus, it can be concluded that the analysed seed stands from Czarne and Malinka, compartment 91h can be used as a supplementary seed base. However, at the individual partial population level, the Bukowiec spruce population, compartment 149h is considered to be of the highest value.
