Opis:
The riparian forests develop in river valleys. Because of their soils fertility about 90% of the area occupied by forests of this type in the past has been transformed into farmlands. We studied hydrological characteristics conducive for development of riparian forests vegetation in small lowland river valley. Our study revealed limited role of the flooding phenomena in formation of these forests: average duration time of flooding amounted to 10 days per year. Frequent and long−lasting floods inhibit regeneration of the riparian forests on ex−meadows and prolong dominance of non−forest vegetation in the area adjacent to river channel.

Opis:
Las Osobowicki forest is a remnant riparian woodland of the Odra valley, although its site conditions have been anthropogenically disturbed. To assess species richness of the drained forest, floristic data were collected from circular plots with a radius of 5.64 m. Plots were systematically distributed in forest communities. In total, 87 species were identified in the study area, with a mean of 14 species per plot. The share of alien species was minor. Flood prevention caused site drying and, as a result, decrease in species richness of the riparian forest. However, spatial distribution of species number values proves the sustained influence of the moisture factor on the vegetation. Connection of species richness and hydrological conditions is supported by positive correlation between species richness and Ellenberg moisture index.

Opis:
Urban river valleys are exposed to strong anthropogenic pressure, but despite these distortions they provide important habitats in urban areas. Not embanked forests are particularly valuable in urban river valleys as they represent fragments of natural vegetation in a highly changed environment. The study assesses the flora and structure of forest communities in a riparian urban forest complex that is under the direct influence of river water. Las Pilczycki Forest in Wrocław (SW Poland) is such a riparian forest island. We analysed the species richness and composition in terms of the phytocoenoses variability and their syntaxonomic classification. We also investigated if the vegetation can indicate a spatial differentiation in habitat conditions. Floristic and phytosociological data were collected from 70 circular plots (100 m&suo2; each) located in a grid. A total of 81 species were recorded, with a mean of 21 species per plot. Most frequent were: Acer campestre, Acer platanoides, Anemone nemorosa, Ficaria verna, Fraxinus excelsior, Galium aparine, Geum urbanum, Impatiens parviflora and Sambucus nigra. In biological spectrum the most numerous were hemicryptophytes, megaphanerophytes and geophytes. The number of alien species was minor (9% of the flora). The most frequent anthropophyte was Impatiens parviflora. Soil moisture, acidity and fertility indices exhibited spatial correlations and they were higher in the western part of the forest. The moisture index was also higher in the northern part. Species richness ranged from 13 to 32 (with a mean of 21 species). Two forms of Ficario−Ulmetum minoris were identified: with Galanthus nivalis and with Tilia cordata. The first was a well−structured riparian community, while the latter one represented the drained floodplain forest. Vegetation units are spatially separated, in the western part of the forest prevails form with Galanthus nivalis, while in the east – with Tilia cordata. In isolated alluvial forests of urban area local site conditions are crucial for the vegetation patches, because of the distortion of river valleys. The absence of flood embankments is not a sufficient condition for maintaining proper structure of riparian forests.

Opis:
The study embraced 159 nest boxes placed in three different study plots in the Wielkopolski National Park in western Poland. In the first season, 64% of nest boxes were occupied by four species: great tit Parus major, blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, Eurasian nuthatch Sitta europaea and European pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca. The dominant species were great and blue tits. Over 80% of broods of great tits and blue tits were reared successfully. Birds preferred nest boxes located in plots with domination of oaks and Scots pine and with rich underbrush. Woodpeckers damaged entrances of 70% of the nest boxes, but did not cause any brood losses. In 13% of the boxes nests of hornets, bumblebees and wasps were found. Bumblebees chose boxes with a bird nest material, whereas wasps and hornets avoided sites occupied by the birds. In general, the insects had a small impact on breeding success of birds and caused failure of only 3% of all broods. Obtained results show that nest boxes in forests may increase density of the most common cavity nesters and secure their high breeding success.

Opis:
We studied the use of 299 nest boxes placed as the biological compensation for forest removal during construction of A4 motorway in south−east Poland. Four types of nest boxes were placed in Scots pine stands: standard box type I (n=73), standard box type II (n=80), an open box (n=73) and a box for treecreepers Certhia sp. (n=73). During the first breeding season 78% of standard boxes I and 16% of standard boxes II were occupied. Standard boxes I were used mainly by the Great Tit Parus major and Blue Tit Cyanistes careuleus. Standard boxes II were used only by the European Starling Sturnus vulgaris. Neither open boxes, nor boxes for the treecreepers were occupied by any species. In the second breeding season similar number of standard boxes type I were used by tits, while starlings occupied significantly more boxes of type II than a year before. Boxes for treecreepers as well as open ones remained unoccupied. We emphasize the need of monitoring of the effects of any compensation as it allows to adjust proper methods for different species.

Opis:
We analysed 7 territories of the nightjar located in the Puławy Forest District (eastern Poland). Density of the breeding population on the studied area was 0.88 territory/km². The smallest territory covered 4.5 ha, while the biggest one – 18.7 ha (average 13 ha). Birds were found in a loose birch and pine forest, in the plantation and nearby the working railway. Significant differences in open area contribution and in share of undergrowth and brushwood were found between analysed territories and random patches. Greater biodiversity was found in places chosen by birds.
