Opis:
Mountain pine (Pinus mugo) is the most important component of the sub−alpine and alpine zone in the Tatras, and other ranges of central Europe. In Poland, only population from the Karkonosze Mts. has been studied in terms of phytopathological threats so far. There is not much information on the diseases caused by fungi in the mountain pine from other regions either. The mycological analyses of infected mountain pine needles were conducted for years 2013 and 2014 in subalpine zone of the Tatra Mts (Morskie Oko, Hala Gąsienicowa, Hala Kondratowa). Pine needles rust Coleosporium tussilaginis and yellow spots Lophodermium conigenum were found. To a lesser extent the needles were spotted with symptoms caused by Mycosphaerella dearnessi. Infection symptoms and fraction of the infected needles on one shoot were determined. The isolation of fungi was conducted in end of July, when the intensity of disease symptoms on needles was the highest. The main species isolated from the infected needles was Lophodermium spp., while the dominant one was L. conigenum. Except for this pathogen, L. pinastri, Botrytis cinerea and Epicoccum niger were identified together with several saprotrophic species, e.g. Aspergillus niger. The most frequent disease of mountain pine needles in the Tatra Mts. is pine needles rust. Observations in the Karokonosze and the Tatra Mts. indicate that both populations suffer from similar diseases. The differences show that pathogens adapt to different environmental conditions. Therefore constant monitoring of the health status of mountain pine growing in nature seems to be necessary.

Opis:
Needle casts belong to the fungal diseases of the assimilation apparatus, which affect the success and quality of the renewal of pine stands. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of communities of fungi, which occurred on Scots pine needles. Samples were collected in autumn 2015 from Scots pine saplings from Przedborów Forest District (17°58'34'E 51°31'57'N). Material was sequenced for DNA using Ilumina system. The results were compared with the NCBI base sequences. The results show significant dominance of fungi from Ascomycota division. The taxa responsible for the occurrence of Scots pine needle cast disease were also found. In this group, a significant share characterized the following species: Lophodermium pinastri, Cyclaneusma minus, Lophodermium seditiosum, Sydowia polyspora, Cenangium ferruginosum and Beauveria bassiana. The presented research should enhance the knowledge about the diversity of fungi inhabiting pine needles and about the contribution of pathogenic taxa, which can be used in a more efficient use of protective measures in forest management practice.

Opis:
We studied Scots pine stands differing in age to determine the influence of tree age (6−20−year−old), needle age, and needle location in the crown and on the shoot on total soluble phenolic compounds (TPh) content in needles. These compounds are secondary metabolites, which largely determine the resistance of plants to unfavorable biotic factors such as herbivorous insects and pathogenic fungi. Examining the constitutive resistance of needles (without indications of damage), we found a statistically significant positive effect of needles age (1−3−year) and a negative effect of whorl age on TPh content, but only in older needles. We found that in spite of the large influence of the needle's age, the light conditions have a significant positive influence on the TPh content, as indicated by changes in the level of phenols with whorl age, comparing needles of different ages. The tree's age was important, but only when the cleaning was carried out changing the light conditions of needle growth. Moreover, we revealed that in the oldest needles (3−year), the position on the shoot also has a significant influence on TPh content in the needles. The level of phenols is lower in the needles growing on the bottom part of the shoot, which are shaded by needles growing on the upper side of the shoot.

The aim of the study was to determine the rate of mineralization of needles in a pine stand in relation to site and to microbiological conditions occurring on dune slopes of contrasting aspects. The research was conducted in the old−growth pine forest overgrowing a latitudinally located dune in the Bydgoska Forest (N Poland). On contrasting dune slopes (northern and southern) rate of mineralization of pine needles was investigated in the 2−years experiment (2012−2014) with the litterbag method. Besides, following investigations were conducted in the middle part of both slopes: 1. dynamics of soil moisture and soil temperature were measured at a depth of 3 cm for 18 days during the 2013 growing season (interval of 2 weeks was applied) and 2. populations of bacteria and fungi were determined for all subhorizons of organic soil horizon (Ol, Of, Oh) as well as for a mineral horizon (AEs) of both soils. Weight loss of needles was found to be higher on northern than on a southern slope what was consequently stated for all 4 terms of taking measurements (6, 12, 18 and 24 months after placement of litterbags). The discrepancy has increased with time and after 2 years it equaled 14.7% when the loss was 61.1% for northern and 46.4% for a southern slope. It could be surprising that such differences were found in spite a sunny slope was characterized by stated in a study higher soil temperature. It should have a stimulating effect on mineralization of organic material; however a soil located on a southern slope was also found as much drier. Thus, the periodic deficiency of soil moisture was indicated as a limiting factor for occurrence of both bacteria and fungi on a southern slope due to the numbers of both groups of microorganisms were much lower on the slope than on a northern aspect. Conditioned by more favourable site parameters, higher number of microbial population occurring on a shadow slope could explain higher rate of mineralization of needles stated for the slope aspect. The moisture factor can be of especially high significance for microbial occurrence and activity and thus for litter decomposition just in dry inland dune ecosystems. It was concluded that in relatively monotonous pine forests overgrowing dry and poor in nutrients soils of inland dunes the slope aspect is an agent significantly differentiating both site and soil microbial conditions.

Effect of a weak defoliation by the larvae of the lappet moth and nun moth on chemical composition of needles, litter and soil in the 33−years old Scots pine stands was studied. The four variants were tested: I – larvae feeding, litterfall with frass and damaged needles, II – larvae feeding, but litterfall excluded (collected), III – no larvae, litterfall from the variant II spilled around trees, IV (untreated) – no larvae, litterfall without frass and damaged needles. No changes in chemical composition of litter and soil after two years of weak spring defoliation were found. However, there was a significant decrease of soluble carbohydrates and 5 sesquiterpenes as well as an increase of total monoterpenes in needles of trees in the variant II in comparison to other variants. All of those compounds are carbon−based, thus trees probably only relocated this element to a higher production of monoterpenes to make needles less attractive as a food source.

Opis:
This study was carried out in the Słowiński National Park (SNP; northern Poland) in Scots pine forest stands. The aim of the research was to compare the accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese in needles of pines growing on in dry (Bs), fresh (Bw) and moist (Bw) habitats. The age of needles, soil moisture and the content of examined components in the soil were taken into account. Needles and soil samples were collected in September from 15 sites (Bs – 5, Bśw – 3, Bw – 7). The nitrogen was determined with Kiejdahl method, and the phosphorus by the molybdate method after digestion in the mixture of 98% H2SO4 and 30% H2O2. The content of K, Mg, Ca, Zn, Ni, Fe and Mn was assessed by atomic absorption spectrometry after digestion in the mixture of 65% HNO3 and 30% H2O2. The soils of SNP, developed from deep dune sands, were very poor in nutrients. The highest amounts of macro− and micronutrients were found in organic and humic levels. In mineral levels, the content of the ingredients decreased rapidly and in many cases was beyond the limit of determination. Extreme nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiency was found in analysed needles, together with adequate amounts of magnesium, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese as well as an excess of calcium. Differences in the nutritional state of Scots pine in investigated habitats were apparent primarily in the sum of the components accumulated in the needles. Needles accumulated in total from 736.5 to 850.7 mmolc/kg of nutrients, with macronutrients ranging from 98.6 to 99.1%. The accumulation of macro− and micronutrients in the examined needles decreased in the series Bśw>Bw>Bs. Mn and Fe showed the largest share in the micronutrient pool. Zn and Ni were significantly less common. The comparison of the accumulation of macro− and micronutrients in the needles indicated that stands on Bśw have slightly better conditions for development under unfavourable soil and climatic conditions prevailing in the Łeba Spit than those in Bs and Bw habitats.
