Opis:
The paper provides research results concerning the relationship between age, absolute height and relative crown length of black alder. Analysis of the ratio of relative crown length to tree height of black alder trees allowed to develop a crown length model. Alder is capable of producing a secondary crown, which entails the shortening of the non−branched section of the trunk. A relationship has been found between the length of the primary crown and the length of the secondary crown depending on elongation of the secondary crown at the cost of shortening of the primary crown.

Opis:
The main aim of the research was to study trees growth responses to the changing environmental conditions and to assess the degree of damage to trees taking into consideration their secondary crown. Based the material from plots established in 12 silver fir stands (tab.), chronologies were developed for trees in various age classes (fig. 1). 1950 saw a downward trend in the radial growth that continued till 1985, to be followed by an upturn lasting till 2000, when the radial growth stabilised. No significant changes in tree−growth were observed in the group of the youngest trees. Three types of growth response to environmental changes (positive, neutral and negative) were distinguished in the last three 15−year−long periods. In years 1970−1984 the largest proportion of firs indicated negative growth responses, while firs with positive response dominated in the period 2000−2014 (fig. 2). The period 1970−2014 saw a steady increase in the mean value of growth responses. The assessment of the top−crown growth (feature B) showed that more than 50% of the trees showed inhibited growth (fig. 3). The assessment of tree vitality (feature C) confirmed the dominance of trees with moderate crown vitality. The vitality of the secondary crowns (Zw) situated below the primary crowns (Zp) of firs was assessed on the basis of crown density and its length (formula [1]). Incorporating Zw in the assessment of tree damage (formula [2]) resulted in an increase in the vitality of the whole crown (Z) (fig. 4). Based on the defoliation, 73% of trees were found to be within damage class 2 (fig. 5). Another method of damage to trees determination was adopted (formula [3]) to assess the damage to fir stands and showed that the largest proportion of trees was with moderate damage (fig. 6). The damage index values obtained with this method were lower compared to the method that considers the defoliation exclusively. Even lower index values were obtained while using the method based on both damage index W and tree−growth response. Of the three discussed damage assessment methods, the most accurate is the method based on damage index Wz, taking into account the growth response of the entire crown (Z).

The study was carried out in mixed stands in Jata reserve. All gaps over than 20 m2 were localized. The aim of the study was to describe the structure and vitality of silver fir regeneration in gaps and under stand canopy. Following hypothesis was tested: better condition for fir growth is in small gaps, in bigger gaps fir is decreased by the development of deciduous tree species. It was found that gap size did not influence on the quantity of fir regeneration. The hypothesis was rejected. In mixed stands of the Jata reserve fir was not the dominant tree species not only in gaps but also under the stand canopy. The vitality of fir trees has been improved in last years, what suggests the increment in tree crowns lenght.

Opis:
The main goal of the study was the determination of the relationship between selected crown parameters derived from automatically processed airborne laser scanning (ALS) data and tree diameter. It has been found that the best set of features for that purpose is crown projection area (CPA) as a predictor and tree basal area (BA) as dependent variable. Two algorithms of crown segmentation (‘growing’ and ‘pouring’) have been analysed. Weibull, exponential and hyperbole functions have been the best for description of the relationship between CPA and BA. The relationship between tree diameter and crown characteristics was significant, but relatively weak. This can be attributed to the fact, that the relationship can be modified by various stand characteristics. Including such variables as tree stocking and crown closure should improve the model significantly.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine whether differences exist between the selected characteristics of Norway spruce cones and seeds depending on their location in the crown. The study was performed in two spruce tree stands growing under mountainous conditions (the Beskidy Mountains, southern Poland). In winter 2015, the cones were collected from 60 standing trees located in the two selected seed stands – Ujsoły and Rycerka. From each tree, the cones were collected from three crown zones: top, central and bottom differing in terms of light conditions. Two characteristics of the cones and six characteristics of the seeds were analysed. To determine quantitative and qualitative traits of seeds standard methods for seed testing were applied. Significant differences between the populations were determined for cone weight and fraction of full seeds, weight of 1000 seeds and germination capacity. The crown zones differed significantly in terms of fraction of cones in the parts of the crown and mass of one cone as well as weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity. Moreover, a significant intra−population variation was observed for a majority of the analysed characteristics (fraction of full seeds, weight of one cone, weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy, and germination capacity). However, no statistically significant interaction between population and crown zone was observed. A significantly lower contribution of cones in the bottom zone of the crown may affect the economic viability of the commercial harvest. On the other hand some of the important seeds traits (e.g. weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity) were significantly better in the bottom and central part of the crown than in the top zone. There are no justified circumstances (both qualitative and quantitative) to perform the cone harvest only from the top zone of the crown.

Opis:
Scots pine stands in central Poland are now seen to be experiencing dynamic development of lower layers formed by oaks. The under−canopy natural renewal taking place in this way is sometimes characterised by good silvicultural quality, and could therefore be taken advantage of in the process of stand conversion. The study assess the quality of existing undergrowth layers of oak present in older stands of Scots pine, most especially from the point of view of their suitability for subjection to further silvicultural measures. The research material was collected in 10 objects where site type was classified as mesic mixed coniferous site type (BMśw) as well as in 11 ones with mesic mixed broadleaved forest (LMśw) site type. In each site type, 2 or 3 stands were selected to typify undergrowth layers aged 15, 20, 25 or 30 years. Assessment of oak undergrowth trees was made on the basis of 4−point scale in case of trunk or crown quality and vitality, and on a 3−point scale when vitality and the development trend were concerned. Next we selected the trees with future potential characterised by the highest quality from the point of view of all studied traits. A further determination concerned the influence on the traits in these best trees of the oak understorey that was exerted by biometric features of both the sheltering Scots pine stand and the under−growth itself. The studied undergrowth oaks are of either very good or good quality. Around 90% of these young trees could be assigned to 1st or 2nd quality class with the respect of all of analysed traits. Furthermore, fertility of the site type was found not to have any influence on the quality of the young oaks. However, where the number of trees identified as having future potential is concerned, influence was demonstrated for density of trees in both stand and the undergrowth layer, as well as their height, breast−height diameter and basal area. Oaks forming the lower layer beneath Scots pine stands are thus characterised by good quality and growth trends, to the extent that this suggests allowing further growth to take place, with inclusion within the main stand or next generation.
