Opis:
The research was conducted in the Człuchów Forest (NW Poland). Eight research plots representing early developmental stages (forest plantation and thicket stage) of Scots pine stands were established. Five traps baited with cow dung were set in each of the plots. In total, 24,811 specimens representing 34 species of dung beetles (coprophagous Scarabaeoidea) were collected. The structure of dung beetle communities inhabiting forest plantations and thicket stages of pine stands changes in the course of the vegetation season. The culmination of the process takes place in July, when a dramatic drop in the number of both individuals and species occurs. Dung beetle communities inhabiting forest plantations and thicket stages of pine stands are dominated by earth−boring dung beetles (Geotrupidae). The proportion of individuals representing Aphodiinae and Scarabaeinae dung beetles amounts to less than 40% of the total. Anoplotrupes stercorosus plays the role of the superdominant in those communities, and Trypocopris vernalis is a superdominant or dominant species. Two communities of dung beetle were differentiated, based on the season of adult activity: spring−autumn type (characterized by high species richness and the presence of Agrilinus ater, Calamasternus granarius, Chilothorax paykulli, Copris lunaris, Esymus merdarius, Heptaulacus testudinarius, Melinopterus sphacelatus, Nimbus contaminatus, Oxyomus sylvestris and Rhyssemus puncticollis) and spring−summer type (characterized by the lowest species richness and the presence of Bodilopsis rufa, B. sordida, Geotrupes spiniger, Limarus zenkeri, Othophorus haemorrhoidalis and Rhodaphodius foetens).

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a three−year research on ground beetle (Carabidae) assemblages conducted in the stands of the Piska Primeval Forest damaged by the 2002 hurricane and in control stands. Observations were carried out in the stands categorised into 5 age classes: class I (20−40 years), class II (40−50 years), class III (50−60 years), class IV (60−70 years) and class V (over 70 years). Beetles were caught using modified Barber's traps. The soil CO2 efflux rate and C:N ratio were measured. The Ward cluster analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) clearly distinguished between carabid assemblages in the stands damaged by the hurricane and control stands. In damaged stands there was an increase in the number of Carabidae species with the simultaneous decrease in their abundance. The proportion of forest and European species has been considerably reduced. A marked decline in abundance of hygrophilous species in favour of xerophylous ones was also noted. The observed reduction in the SPC (Sum of Progressive Characteristics) index may indicate the preservation of changes in carabid assemblages and that their regeneration has not yet started.

The treated logs were less (sometimes – significantly) infested by the most frequently occurring species, but the difference between two variants of treatment was not very high. The logs exposed in sunny place were less infested than those stocked under stand canopy. As this environmentally friendly treatment reduced the infestation of logs by bark beetles (including I. typographus), it can be recommended especially for mountain areas under protection regime.

During the period from 2003 to 2011 observations of carabid community regression and selected habitat indicators were conducted on 15 plots in stands that had been disturbed by a hurricane and on 15 plots in control stands. Regression of carabid communities delayed 3−4 years was observed, consisting in increases in the number of species and the proportion of xerophilous species and reductions in the percentage of forest fauna and in mean individual biomass. Only after 7 years did these indicators begin to show a tendency in the reverse direction, albeit not very strong, indicating that carabid communities had begun to regenerate.

During winter time, beetle individuals were collected from soil samples taken from a Scots pine culture, an old−growth Scots pine forest, and a European larch culture and old−growth. The following research questions were put forward: (1) Does an admixture of larch in the forest stand contribute to increase in species diversity as well as the numbers of beetle individuals hibernating in the forest litter? (2) Does an admixture of larch in the forest stand result in an increased proportion of beetle species – potentially pests for the forest trees, in the carabid communities? We analyzed data with use PCA, Ward method. The first question should be answered positively. The second question should be answered negatively. The analyses of beetle fauna overwintering in the forest litter as carried out in this paper confirmed the purposefulness of larch introduction as an admixture in pine stands in Lithuania.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of temperature and humidity on colonization of cambio−xylophagous insects on Norway spruce branches in relation to the place and method of slash utilization. Analyzed branches were infested by eight species of cambiophagous and two species of cambioxylophagous, whereas the material utilization method does not substantially influence the entomofauna species composition. The most numerous were: Pityogenes chalcographus, Ips amitinus, Dryocoetes autographus and Pityophthorus pityographus. The branches treatment was a factor contributing significantly to the infestation intensity by P. chalcographus and I. amitinus, reaching a higher density of galleries on the branches spreading disorderly on the forest floor than collected in the piles. Moreover, it was found that the location of branches inside the pile determines their attractiveness to hygrophilous species with a minor economic importance. Significant differences in temperature and relative humidity inside the piles and the surrounding branches scattered disorderly on the surface during the growing season indicate that this may be an important factor influencing logging residues left in the forest infestation intensity by bark beetles.

The paper discusses the species composition and structure of ground beetles (Col., Carabidae) assemblages inhabiting different areas in "Mszar" peat bog reserve. The discussion is followed by an evaluation of the natural condition of this habitat. The observations were carried out in 2006−2007 and comprised three different areas of "Mszar" peat bog reserve: birch forest on lowland peat bog, mixed forest on peat soils and spruce stand inside wet mixed forest. Carabid beetles were captured in modified pitfall (Barber) traps. An ecological analysis of carabids was worked out on the basis of their geographical distribution, foraging, habitat and moisture demands and type of development. It was found out that the assemblages of ground beetles living in the peat bog reserve, in terms of species diversity, were similar to those in other peat bogs in north−eastern Poland and north−western Belarus. The species composition, structure of dominance classes and lack of stenobiotic peat bog species, however, may indicate that the state of equilibrium in "Mszar" peat bog reserve has been distrubed. The reasons could involve increasing man−made pressure (roads, tourist trails and a wastewater treatment plant in close vicinity).

A survey on the structure and species composition of ground beetle assemblages inhabiting forest stands disturbed by the hurricane was carried out. During the first 6 years after the hurricane two distinct phases of carabids response to the disturbance could be observed. The first 3 years were characterised by relatively minor, although mostly statistically significant changes in carabids abundance, mean individual biomass and assemblages structure. In the 4th year after the hurricane, the second phase started comprising profound changes in all analysed parameters. The state of development of ground beetle assemblages inhabiting disturbed stands worsened considerably, however it did not reach the very low level recorded in assemblages inhabiting clear−cuts. The study revealed that the regression of carabid assemblages in post−hurricane stands occurred with a time lag of 3 years after the hurricane. Moreover, no symptoms of carabid assemblages regeneration could be observed.

Opis:
In the end of 2013 the Norway spruce stands in the Kościelska Valley in the Tatra National Park (S Poland) were severely damaged by the wind. In the next year about 22,000 m3 of timber from broken and fallen trees was processed and removed from the active protection zone, whilst in the strict protection zone those trees were left. In 2014, when the presented survey started, the infestation of lying and surrounding standing trees was very low, but starting from 2015 an intensive bark beetle Ips typographus outbreak affected the survived stands. No−intervention strategy was implemented by the national park in both zones, regardless their formal status at that time as well. In 2015 a set of 10 observation plots (200 trees in total) was established in both active and passive (strict) protection zones (5 plots in each zone). In 2017 a new set of 12 plots (240 trees in total) was installed (6 plots in each zone). On each plot the breast height diameter of all trees was measured and the relative mortality of trees (share of attacked spruces) was recorded each year. The infestation density and sex ratio were defined on the 25×25 cm bark samples taken from 138 trees in 2 trunk sections located 1.5−2.0 above the ground and in the midway between tree and crown bases. The bark beetle attack on living spruces in 2015 differed between the active and strict protection zones. The relative tree mortality was lower in active than in passive protection zone (20 and 39% respectively), but later it gradually came to be similar in both parts of the area (73.3 and 77.5%, respectively in 2017). In the initial outbreak phase, thinner (weaker) trees were attacked, and in the following years – stronger ones, although in the active protection zone the opposite pattern occurred initially. The attack density decreased in subsequent years, being higher in active protection zone, with gradually decreasing difference between zones. Thicker trees were attacked with lower intensity. The share of females, higher in active protection zone (68.2 vs. 63.9%), gradually decreased to (57.9 vs. 51.2%). The initial decrease of bark beetle attack intensity in the active protection zone gradually disappeared after the no−intervention strategy was applied. The resulting extended bark beetle infestation and its increasing intensity in both parts of the area, demonstrate the appropriateness and effectiveness of active protection measures applied in 2014.

Opis:
The lack of effective methods of forest protection against bark beetles in Norway spruce stands was the reason for undertaking the studies aimed at the assessment of efficacy of pheromone traps Trinet P that act as an ‘attract and kill' system to reduce the population of spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (Col.: Curculionidae: Scolytinae). The Trinet P trap consists of a triangular stand, on which the net containing alpha−cypermethrin is stretched. Each trap is baited by the synthetic pheromone attracting I. typographus beetles, which fly towards the trap and die due to the contact with the net coated with insecticide. The experiments were conducted in 2011−2012 on 6 experimental plots located in 26−82−years−old Norway spruce stands in Beskid Sądecki Mts. (southern Poland) that were threatened with the bark beetles. The experimental plot consisted of 100 m long stand edge exposed to bark beetle attack, with set of 5 traps installed in line. Similar stand edges without traps were used as control. The experiments were assumed before the I. typographus swarming, i.e. at the turn of April and May of each year. The treatment efficacy was estimated after 5 months by counting infested trees on plots with treatment and control variants. In the most cases the protective effect expressed by significantly lower number of infested trees on the edges with Trinet P traps. The symptoms of infestation by I. typographus were found up to 20% of trees in the stands protected with the Trinet P traps, while more than 80% of trees were attacked by the spruce bark beetle on the control plots. Despite these differences, the infestation density of trees in the stands protected and unprotected with traps was similar. No effect on non−target organisms was observed. The effectiveness of Trinet P traps is similar as of commonly used pheromone traps, thus this novel device can be used for the protection of Norway spruce stands against I. typographus.

Opis:
The paper presents results of the research carried out between 2004 and 2008 on the effect of ownership category on the threat to spruce stands from cambiophagous insects. The share of dead trees in the stands under individual and community ownership has been determined. It has been shown that the existing threats to spruce stands from the European bark beetle and the need for their salvation require more attention to be given to the training of forest owners in prevention and protection.
