Opis:
The steeplebush is a shrub growing naturally in North America. In Europe this species has been cultivated as an ornamental plant since the 18th century. It has been observed in spontaneously developing secondary localities in such countries as Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany. In Poland there are three regions in which Spiraea tomentosa is known to be a permanently established anthropophyte: Puszcza Drawska, Bory Niemodlińskie and Bory Dolnośląskie forests. The greatest number of localities of this shrub can be found in the extensive area of the latter, where its expansion has caused significant changes in the natural environment and problems in woodland management. Therefore a research was carried out to find what conditions made the steeplebush ready for invasion and what types of plant communities were especially susceptible to it. The information about the distribution of S. tomentosa in the Bory Dolnośląskie Forest (SW Poland) was collected during field observations in the years 2011−2014. We also verified and used the results of a survey made in 2011 in three forest districts located in the study area: Ruszów, Węgliniec and Wymiarki. The analysis concerned the frequency of the steeplebush in the forest environment in terms of the forest habitat type, species composition, and stand growth stage as well as in non−forest environments like meadows, peatland, margins of drainage ditches, etc. Phytocoenoses in the habitats of humid mixed coniferous forests and humid coniferous forests with mature tree stands dominated by birches or alders were found to be forest communities the most susceptible to colonisation by S. tomentosa. Especially susceptible to steeplebush invasion were also forest cultures on those habitats. Much fewer steeplebush localities were recorded on fresh and mixed coniferous forests as well as fresh broadleaved forests. In a non−forest environments the steeplebush was mostly noted on margins of drainage ditches. The extensive system of such man−made environmental structures in the Bory Dolnośląskie Forest was found to be the most important factor favouring the expansion of S. tomentosa. Thus, the invasion of the discussed species is primarily determined by a large proportion of humid habitats in a single compact woodland complex connected by a dense network of drainage ditches.

Opis:
The American mink (Neovison vison) is a species that experienced unprecedented ecological success in the 20 th century, which can be seen in both the dynamic increase in its zoogeographical range, and in its effective adaptation to ecological niches in new areas. The driving forces of this phenomenon include intensification and globalization of mink farming, which is accompanied by introduction and rapid spread of the species outside its natural range. The first observations of mink in the wild in Poland took place in the middle of the last century. Within 60 years, American mink colonized almost entire country and the process of invasion and colonization is still ongoing. The high rate of invasion and ecological success achieved by the populations from the introduction is possible due to the high ecological plasticity of American mink, its high reproductive potential, the availability of free ecological niche left by European mink (Mustela lutreola), extinct in many areas, and the frequent lack of natural enemies on the occupied territories. Dynamic geographical spread of allochthonous American mink is associated with a number of very serious ecological problems, primarily through predation, competition and aggression against indigenous fauna, as well as transmission of Aleutian mink disease virus. This results in fact that American mink is regarded as one of most dangerous invasive species in the world. In the absence of practical possibilities of its permanent eradication from Poland, local eradication programs on vulnerable areas (e.g. waterbirds breeding sites), as well as large−scale population size control, promotion of natural enemies and competitors, and improvement of living conditions of its prey−species are most recommended. The most important in monitoring and control programs of alien populations is limitation of farm−animals escapes and recognition of methods for their simple and unambiguous identification. Indisputable determination of the free−ranging animals origin would allow for taking the appropriate actions against owners of the unsafe farms. At the same time, implementation of a holistic and systemic approach to solve the problem of the presence of American mink in the natural environment would help to fulfil Polish obligations resulting from ratified international conventions and EU law.

Opis:
Since its initial discovery in 1945, pitch canker caused by Gibberella circinata (anamorph Fusarium circinatum) has become one of the most important pine diseases in the world. It infests 57 pine species (including Pinus sylvestris) and Douglas−fir. F. circinatum has been reported in both nurseries and forests on all continents except Australia and Oceania. Both vegetative and reproductive parts of the host plant (i.e. stem, branches, roots, flowers, cones and seeds) can be infected by F. circinatum. For mature trees, the main symptoms include bleeding resinous cankers on the stem and branches as well as tree death. In nurseries, F. circinatum causes pre− and post−emergence damping off as well as mortality of older seedlings. Dispersal of fungal spores occurs through air, water splash, soil, insect vectors and translocation of the infected plant material. Currently there are no effective means of controlling pitch canker, although there is ongoing research into using chemical, physical and biological methods, quarantine and breeding for resistance to control this disease. The occurrence of the disease depends mainly on the presence and density of the host species, favorable climatic conditions (especially high humidity), presence of suitable vectoring and wounding agents and various stress factors. Taking into account the above−mentioned factors, threat to Scots pine in Poland should be considered marginal, but it cannot be ruled out completely. KEY WORDS

Opis:
Invasive tree species are one of the most important threats to the riparian ecosystems. We aimed to check (1) whether invasive tree species have wider annual radial increments than native species and (2) which climatic factors (describing annual variability of air temperature and precipitations) influence radial growth of the investigated species. The study was conducted in the Warta river valley in Poznań (W Poland). Detrended chronologies were built using 28 cores bored from Acer negundo and 20 from Fraxinus pennsylvanica. Mean annual radial increment of A. negundo was of 3.91 ±0.19 mm and of F. pennsylvanica – 2.76 ±0.08 mm. Radial growth of A. negundo was significantly correlated to precipitation in June of the increment year and temperature in November of the year before the increment. In turn, radial growth of F. pennsylvanica was significantly correlated to precipitation in April and temperature in May and June of the increment year. These factors explained 44 and 55% of variance in radial increments widths of A. negundo and F. pennsylvanica, respectively. Annual radial growth of the alien species studied were higher than in case of native riparian species. Thus, studied invasive species constitute a serious threat for the analysed riparian ecosystems. Obtained results may be helpful for predicting their spread under projected climate change scenarios.

The secondary invasion of Prunus serotina in the forest ecosystems is currently a serious problem, both in ecological and economical terms. The article presents how the intensity of the regeneration of this kenophyte depends on the type of coniferous forest community, in which it takes place. The effect of the herb and moss layers and of their attributes on the abundance of black cherry saplings is discussed.

Opis:
Managed forests are likely to be exposed to uncontrolled, spontaneous spread of alien/invasive species as a result of a frequently conscious introduction of alien species to forests in order to achieve economic gains. Unfortunately, we still lack data on the intensity of such invasions to forests on a larger scale. The aim of the paper is to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of the existing regeneration of tree species, particularly the alien ones, and to determine the impact of selected factors on the regeneration of introduced species. The research was carried out in a mixed coniferous forest habitat in the "Uroczysko Główne". Particular focus was on the regeneration of alien species. Eight tree species were found to be regenerating naturally on the examined plots of which two were alien species. The scale of occurrence of alien species in comparison with native ones, particularly the black cherry, may now become a problem. Alien species accounted for nearly 25% of all tree species regeneration in the examined area and were noted in over half of the plots. It can therefore be said that the conditions occurring in the southern complex of the Niepołomice Forest have a great impact on tree regeneration and may favour spontaneous spread of alien species. The research helped to quantified and qualified the intensity of forest colonisation by the two most frequently occurring alien species.

Paper analyses relationships between radial growth and seven crown−related parameters (crown length, relative length, width, slenderness, projection area and volume as well as single tree space) for ten alien and native tree species growing in 'common garden' conditions in the WULS−SGGW Forest Experimental Station in Rogów (central Poland). Significant correlation was found between 10− and 15−years mean tree−ring width and all analysed crown parameters as well as single tree space for Abies grandis, Abies nordmanniana and, except for crown length and its relative length, for Pinus sylvestris. No relationship was observed between radial increment of Larix decidua, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Quercus rubra and any of analysed crown parameters.
