Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the enzymatic activity and chemical properties of soil in selected stands of different age classes on two forest site types: fresh mixed coniferous forest (BMśw) and fresh mixed deciduous forest (LMśw). The investigations were carried out in Nowe Ramuki Forest District in 2013−2015 located in the central part of Warmińsko−Mazurskie administration district Poland. In organic and humus horizons following parameters were described: acidity in 1M KCL, content of nitrogen, carbon and exchangeable alkaline cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+) as well as hydrolytic acidity. Enzymatic investigation included the measurements of urease, asparaginase, acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase activity. Content of C and N, sum of base cations (S), hydrolytic acidity (Hh), cation exchange capacity (PWK), base saturation percentage were significantly higher in organic than humus horizon. Enzymatic activity was connected with the content of organic matter, what resulted in higher activity in organic than humus horizon independently of site type and stand age. The concentration of organic carbon (C), nitrogen, C/N ratio, hydrolytic acidity and cation exchange capacity was higher on BMśw than LMśw site type. Activity of urease, acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase was lower in soils of LMśw than BMśw site type. Lower enzymatic activity may suggest lower intensity of decaying process of organic matter in these soils. Significant correlations between enzymes and chemical soil parameters were found. Significant correlation between enzymatic activity and soil chemical properties shows that biochemical parameters can be used as indexes of their productivity. Investigation of biochemical reaction intensity can be complement to soil chemical studies usually used in forestry.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of different management treatments of Norway spruce post−harvest logging residues on soil properties. The study compared the impact of residues chipping and arrangement into the stacks. The investigation was carried out in the Nowy Targ Forest District (southern Poland). 15 research plots were selected for the analysis (5 plots with wood chips, 5 with stacks and 5 control ones). In May 2018, on each research plot soil samples for laboratory analysis were collected from the surface horizon (0−10 cm depth). Basic properties (pH, carbon and nitrogen content, base cations content) and enzyme activity (dehydrogenase, urease and−glucosidase) were determined. The obtained results confirm the influence of post−harvest logging residues management on soil properties. The significant differences in soil carbon content between soils of different plots variants were noted. Soils of research plots with wood chips and stacks were characterized by higher content of carbon compared to the control research plots. At the same time soils with post−harvest logging residues had a higher biochemical activity expressed by enzymatic activity. The nutrients released from decaying post−harvest logging residues stimulated the microbiological activity of the soils.

Opis:
Vertical distribution of enzymatic activity in the soil profile was studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and oak (Quercus robur) stands located in southwestern Poland. The enzymatic activity for the most part is accumulative in upper layers of soil: on coniferous site type in Ofh and mineral (0−10 cm) layer, and on broadleaved site type in the mineral (0−10 cm) layer.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the abundance of soil microbiome and enzymatic activity in a control soil sample and in samples with post−mining sediment containing high concentrations of arsenic and some trace elements. The samples were collected under two−year−old seedlings of Norway maple (Acer plantanoides L.) and small−leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.), which came from the Pniewy Forest District (western Poland). Optical emission spectrometry with excitation in plasma induced by the Agilent 5110 ICP−OES spectrometer was applied to analyse the concentration of arsenic and other heavy metals in the substrates and plant material. Before analysis the samples were mineralised with concentrated (65%) nitric acid (V). The count of selected groups of soil microorganisms was measured with the serial dilution method by Koch. The microbiome was measured on selective media. The activity of dehydrogenases as well as acid and alkaline phosphatase was measured spectrophotometrically. The soil and sediment on which the seedlings grew were characterised by the following physicochemical parameters: soil texture (control – loamy sand, sediment – silt), pH (control – 5.85−5.92, sediment – 7.13−7.43), the content of phosphorus (control – 117−121 mg/kg, sediment – 38−46 mg/kg), potassium (control – 6.97−7.03 mg/kg, sediment – 57−61 mg/kg), nitrogen (control – 0.53−0.65 mg/kg, sediment – 1.7−2.1 mg/kg) and total carbon (control – 9.4−10.2 g/kg, sediment – 54.2−57.2 g/kg). The samples contained: control – 0.24 mg/kg, sediment – 282 mg/kg of Astotal, control – below the detection limit, sediment – 1,766 and 16,220 mg/kg of As(III) and (V) respectively. The counts of the microorganisms were lower (103−105) than in typical arable soils (105−109). The counts of bacteria and actinobacteria under the lime seedlings in the control were greater than in the sediment, whereas the counts of moulds were roughly identical. The counts of bacteria and moulds in the sediments under the maple seedlings were greater than in the control, whereas the counts of actinobacteria were roughly identical. The sediments under both species exhibited higher alkaline and acid phosphatase activity than the control soil sample. Only dehydrogenases exhibited higher activity in the control soil under both tree seedlings.

Opis:
The presented research aimed to assess the influence of illegal dumping sites on changes in the phosphorus, nickel and lead content and the phosphatases activity in 0−20 cm top soil−layer. The samples were taken in the Bydgoska Forest (northern Poland) from four points. At plots W1 (debris and ceramic waste, glass, plastics, metals, textiles and used electrotechnical equipment), W2 (electrotechnical equipment, tyres and textiles) and W3 (wastes of organic origin from households as well as cut grass and residue from garden) samples were collected directly under illegally deposited landfill sites. The control plot (K) was located far from the determined waste landfill sites and beyond the range of their effect. We determined: organic carbon (Corg), total and available phosphorus as well as the content of total and available lead and nickel and the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatase. Uncontrolled landfill sites significantly influenced soil properties, which may lead to changes in the phosphomonoesterases activity of soil and the nutrient content. The study concluded that the composition of waste at W3 site had a less negative impact on the soils than at W1 and W2 sites. In the soil from landfills W3 we observed high phosphorus availability (AF 14.9%). The lowest resistance (RS) for alkaline and acid phosphatases was found in soils from the area of dumping sites W1 and W2, while the highest RS was determined for W3. The content of nickel and lead in the soil samples qualifies them into the category of soils with natural content of these compounds. Simple correlation showed clearly that organic matter was particularly implicated in the activity of phosphomonoesterases and the content of lead or nickel. Based on the clustering with Ward's method it was stated that cluster 2 includes two soil samples (W1 and W2) due to its lower phosphatase activity and organic carbon, available phosphorus and total lead content. A high variation in the activity phosphatase under study in soil W2 confirms a high coefficient of variation (>36%).
