Paper presents the methodological assumptions and evaluations of the attractiveness of forest landscape along selected sections of the A4 motorway. Evaluations were based on social preferences studies involving analysis of photo−questionnaires showing the different variants of the landscape along the road at various seasons of the year. Five hundred respondents were involved in this study. Research results have shown that respondents scored forest landscape along the motorway in the predominantly (60% of route length) as an attractive or very attractive.

Opis:
The article presents a comparative analysis of social preferences related to running in the forests of Poland and the Czech Republic. The preferences were determined on the basis of a questionnaire distributed in 2016 via social media among people interested in running in in both countries. The survey covered 346 people over 18 years of age in Poland and 294 people from Czech Republic. The questionnaire included questions such as: the frequency of running in the forest, the preferred season for running and average number of running kilometers in the week and the views on advantages and disadvantages of running in forest areas. The results show that there is quite a lot of differences between the preferences of respondents from both of the analyzed countries. Statistical analysis was carried out using the chi−square test. The observed differences relate mainly to the choice of season for running in forests, the frequency of running in the forests, average distance covered in a week and the views on advantages of running in forest areas. The most preferred season for running in Polish forests was summer, then spring, while in Czech ones it was exactly the opposite. Most respondents in Poland run in the forest several times a week, whereas in the Czech Republic – several times a month. The most frequently mentioned advantages of running in Polish forests were: contact with nature, clean air, landscape – pleasant environment. In Czech forests among the most frequently mentioned advantages of running were: contact with nature, good quality surface and clean air. Subsequently, the respondents pointed to the lack of traffic control infrastructure, and lack or a small number of other recreational people. Among the disadvantages of running in the forest, respondents in both counties mentioned mainly: the presence of tick and hunters. Other factors limiting the comfort of running in the forests included: uneven road surface or problems with phone connection. Only the views on the subject of the attractiveness of the forests for running and disadvantages of running in forest areas were not significantly important.

The objective of the article is to present different types of tourist routes and infrastructure elements preferred by the society basing on the results of the nationwide survey, which was conducted in 2013 on a representative sample of 1000 individuals over the age of 18. The sample was of random−amount character. Respondents evaluated the usability of several types of tourist objects (routes and paths) as well as different devices constituting their equipment. The survey also included the question which allowed the evaluation of usability of 10 infrastructure elements, which increase the quality of leisure in forests. Statistical analyses included General Line Model (GLM) or ANOVA and post−hoc comparisons with Tukey HSD test. In case of equivocal results of analyses, data was retested with PCA, which was selected upon checking the length of gradient with DCA. Data was analyzed with regard to the respondents' age, education and material status. The most desirable routes turned out to be walking trails and hiking routes (fig. 1). Results indicate that the most useful infrastructure objects include waste bins and information boards, while the least usable are playsets for children and fitness equipment (fig. 4). The most useful infrastructure elements are: signs and then ex aequo: car parks, places for animal observation, rest facilities and viewpoints, and the least needed: children's playgrounds, rope parks, and paintball sites.

Habitat preferences of capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in the Augustowska Forest (NE Poland) were evaluated using classification trees. Data were collected on 1033 circular sampling plots localized on leks and in their vicinity with 1 km radius. Gathered information described tree stands (site conditions, age, species composition, tree density, closure, vertical structure, lower strata coverage (saplings and shrubs) and blueberry coverage (Vaccinium myrtillus) as well signs of capercaillie presence. The analysis shows that for capercaillie of key importance are tree stands growing on fresh or wet coniferous sites, more than 100 years old, with density less than 446 trees/ha, with anthill and situated more than 150 from a road.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyse the preferences of jays in terms of oak acorn deposition in accordance to availability of some types of habitat. Investigations were carried out in forested areas of the Olsztyn Lakeland (NE Poland) with Scots pine forests domination. In autumn of 2014 and 2015 122 acorns of Quercus robur with concealed Telenax transmitters were served in four locations and then dispersed by jays Garrulus glandarius. Acorns with transmitters were radio tracked and localized after dispersion in different types of habitats. We distinguished three types of habitat: forest stands >40 years old, young forests <25 years old as well as clear−cuts and other open areas. The availability of habitats were estimated by 144 random points (36 per each location). Obtained availability/utilisation data were analyzed with chi square test ( =0.05). Results showed that majority (76.4%) of dispersed acorns were deposited under canopy of Scots pine stands, while only 8.2% were deposited on clear−cuts and other open areas. It seems that jays avoid to scatter its caches among clear−cuts and other open areas when availability of these types of environment is compared. Jays preferred to scatter the acorns under canopy of older (>40 years old) stands. It proves that the regeneration of oaks in clear−cuts is with low probability of success. The results suggest that density and high quality of regeneration that occurred on some of the clear−cuts seem to be a synchronization relic of oaks' mast crop and Scots pine fellings. In these circumstances the best solution to obtain oak regeneration is to synchronize the harvest with mast crops and carry it out immediately after acorn production to make an oak regeneration success guaranteed.

Opis:
Awareness of the importance of the presence of deadwood in forest ecosystems has increased in recent decades. Today, deadwood is not only recognized as a key element in carbon sequestration, nutrient supply and water retention, but is also known to be a reservoir of saproxylic species (species associated with the decay of wood on living and dead trees). The amount of deadwood in clear−cut forest is currently higher than 100 years ago. The issue of how much deadwood and of what quality (including size) there should be in order to promote the conservation of saproxylic biodiversity and sustainable forest management is still vivid. Mycological analyses to determine (i) structure of fungal communities in Scots pine wood debris, (ii) sources and reservoirs of fungi, (iii) nutritional preferences of fungi, and (iv) potential rate and dynamics of wood decomposition were carried out on an ‘old' and ‘fresh' wood (stumps, branches and boughs) from Jedwabno Forest District (north−eastern Poland). Fungi from 62 wood samples were isolated on two artificial media (PDA and SNA) and identified according to their morphology. Eleven species of Zygomycota, 79 of Ascomycota and 15 of Basidiomycota were detected. The majority of species (91%) colonized many samples. Only 9% of species colonized single samples only. The most common species, with high rates of colonization, included Acremonium spp., Alternaria sp., Aspergillus spp., Aureobasidium pullulans, Cladosporium spp., Epicoccum nigrum, Lecythophora spp., Mariannaea elegans, Ophiostoma + Sporothrix spp., Penicillium spp., Phialocephala spp., Phialophora spp., Phlebiopsis gigantea, Phoma spp., Sarocladium strictum, Scytalidium lignicola, Sydowia polyspora, Trichoderma spp. (mainly T. harzianum and T. viride) and Umbelopsis spp. A few species occurred only on stumps or only on branches. More species occurred on 'old' wood than on 'fresh' wood. The average level of sample colonization by a single fungal species was higher (non−significantly) on 'old' than on 'fresh' wood, and on branches than on stumps. The results show that deadwood is a habitat for many fungal species that occur in succession. The presence of deadwood in clear−cut forest and in its neighborhood is necessary for the conservation of saproxylic fungal diversity and ecological sustainability of forests.

The objective of the paper is to analyse the social preferences to the type of the forest stand and factors deciding about the tourist attractiveness of the forest. Data was collected during the nationwide surveys carried out in 2013 on the random representative sample of 1000 respondents above 18 years of age. The surveyed persons do not indicate strong preferences for deciduous or coniferous forest stands. The analysis of preferences for different types of forest stands with regard to respondents' sex did not confirm the importance of differences. Instead they suggest that respondents of different age tend to change their preferences with time – from broadleaved forest (the youngest respondents) to coniferous forest. Respondents in poor financial standing choose deciduous forest and mixed broadleaved forest, and people in good and very good financial standing – a coniferous forest stand, or rather a mixed one. What makes a forest stand attractive is mostly the forest's appearance and the nature along with the abundance of species, and the least, the presence of water or culture and historic sites. The older the respondents are, the more they appreciate silence and relaxation far from other people, as well as nature along with its abundance of fruits and fungi to be collected, while the least important is the diversity of land. Respondents with higher education (university degree) indicate the availability of land and the presence of waters as the most important features which decide of the attractiveness of forest, whereas people with the lowest education level – nature along with its abundance of species and the forest appearance. Respondents, who are in the best financial situation declare the appearance and the presence of lakes and rivers (features related to leisure), to be the most important factors which decide about tourist attractiveness of forest, and people in poor and very poor financial situation indicated: nature along with the abundance of species, availability of forest, places related to culture and religion, nature reserves, and tourist infrastructure.

Opis:
Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are regarded as food generalists and opportunists, whose great flexibility in food selection enables them to settle in various environments in a wide geographical area inhabited by them. Wild boars are perceived also as agricultural pests, since due to their dietary habits and a method of food seeking more crops are destroyed than consumed. In European habitat of wild boars, which undergoes long−term transformation, cultivated plants are an important ingredient of wild boars' summer and autumn diet. The issue of damage caused by wild boars has not been widely investigated in Poland so far. We analysed what is the crop damage caused by wild boars in summer and early autumn and whether the accessibility of crops (difference in crop acreage) determine the extent of this damage as well as we investigated if wild boars demonstrate preference to particular crops and how flexible they are while selecting food in the period of its oversupply. Research was based on 4215 reports on damage received by the Spała Forest District (C Poland) in 1999−2009 period. In analysed time wild boars caused damage in the wide range of crops. The greatest number of reports concerned damage in potato and in the fields seeded with cereals, while only a few – in beetroot, charlock, buckwheat and rape crops (tab. 1). Statistically significant and high correlation between the area of crops and the extent of damage was recorded. However, the damage was not serious enough to make the proportion of affected area grow bigger along with the area of crops (tab. 2). Although the analysed time span encompassed only 3 months, distinct differences in the extent of damage to cereal (excluding maize) and potato crops were marked. Crops affected the most in July included cereals. In August cereals were still the most affected crops, yet in September a radical change in wild boars' dietary preferences was noticed, while cereals distinctively came second after potatoes (fig. 2). In general, during summer and early autumn wild boars seeking food on fields damage a wide range of cultivated plants without a particular preference towards any species (evident opportunism in the food selection). The number of reported damage and its spatial extent is correlated with the area of particular species cultivation, yet the proportion of damaged area does not increase along with the crops area. Time, which wild boars can spend seeking for food out of the woods appears to be one of the limiting factors. Significant changes in the structure of damage in the short time span prove that wild boars are highly flexible in food selection, which can definitely facilitate their adaptation to new or changing environmental conditions.

The article presents the changes in the preferences of people vacationing in the forests of the Mazowiecki Landscape Park (MPK) in the years 2000−2012. The study covered the preferences for the frequency and duration of rest in the forest and the places and forms of recreation carried out in the MPK forests. These preferences were established on the basis of surveys conducted in the field. In 2000, a questionnaire was sent to 755 people vacationing in the MPK forests. In 2012, the survey covered 390 people vacationing within the MPK. In both cases, the survey involved people over 18 years of age. Preferences of respondents in both studies were compared using the chi−square independence test. The results showed that within twelve years the preferences of respondents in the frequency range of leisure, choice of the place and forms of recreation changed significantly. There was an increase in the number of respondents frequently utilising the MPK forests for recreation and leisure interested in areas equipped with appropriate recreational infrastructure. The share of respondents making such recreational activities in forests as horse riding, cycling and observing nature significantly increased, while the preferences for the duration of rest in the forest have not changed. Still, the MPK forests are primarily a place of the weekend rest. The results indicate that the preferences of recreational users of the forest are largely related to the scope of access to and management of the forest.

Opis:
The number of capercaillie in its entire range of distribution is declining. Its population n Europe (without Russia) amounts to about 580 thousand individuals including 500 thousand in Scandinavia. In Poland, 480−600 capercaillies live in 4 isolated populations. The major reason of the declining abundances of capercaillie can be seen in altered forest biotopes and their isolated distribution, widespread predation, noisy behaviour of people, disturbances in population structure, or extinction of isolated populations. Protective measures in the European countries concentrate on active protection of natural populations, capercaillie restoration and research−based education, computer simulations of the survival of this species and a long−term monitoring system. The projects for restoration of domesticated birds developed in the Czech Republic and Germany appeared unsuccessful. The mortality of released individuals was greater than 90%. Poland lacks both an integrated research programme and a long−term monitoring of capercaillie. Legal regulations in force and national directives concerning the principles of capercaillie protection are not uniformly and efficiently implemented in practice. Currently, breeding of birds for reintroduction is held in the Leżajsk and Wisła Forest Districts.
