Opis:
The paper presents empirical formulae for determination of dry and wet biomass of assimilation apparatus in Scots pine stands of western Poland. Analyzed equations were verified using relative percentage error. Influence of site conditions and different elements on accuracy of analyzed equations were also investigated.

Opis:
The study analysed the causes of the annual variation of tree−ring widths of silver fir and white fir. The partial populations of both fir species has been growing for over 100 years in Rzepin (western Poland) in a fresh broadleaved forest site. We assumed that the year−to−year changes of the size of radial increment presents sensitivity of trees to local climate factor. The period from 1931 to 2015 was analysed. We found that the silver and white firs had high homogeneity of radial growth responses and sensitivity to year−to−year changes of weather conditions. Warm November of the previous year, short winter and high air temperature in August had positive influence on the size of their radial increment. Moreover, precipitation in February, April and July of the year of tree−ring formation contributed to wider tree−ring. The white fir was highly resistant to winter frost in contrast to the silver fir. In addition, this fir species preferred cold springs. Furthermore, the silver fir suffered from overabundant precipitation in August. The climate conditions of western lowland part of Poland were not a limiting factor for growth of both species because the studied populations achieved the highest site index class.

Opis:
Climate change, which was particularly marked at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, was accompanied by unfavourable weather phenomena. One of whose effects cannot be prevented is hurricane. Much of the most devastating storms (e.g. Kyrill in January 2007, Carmen in November 2010), which crossed over Poland, was associated with low pressure systems. The occurrence of high wind speeds in the cold season is a natural feature of Polish climate. Hurricanes in the summer are generally characterized by more complicated origin. The cause of the damage at this time of year may be squall fronts and tornados (e.g. July 4th, 2002 – Puszcza Piska; July 20th, 2007 – Częstochowa region). An important issue is to develop a category of winds for the forest district, which can have destructive effect on the stands. Current research shows that gusty winds exceeding 11 m/s may cause first damage to the trees, while blows with velocity exceeding 30 m/s result in severe damage. Knowing and monitoring the mechanisms that leads to strong winds, assessing their impact, and managing risk in the context of their effects is one of the important elements of a forest management strategy. On August 11th, 2017, after the influx of hot tropic air, much cooler polar air began to flow from the west. In the afternoon and evening storm cell and supercell began to form in the south−west of the country. Later on, they moved in the north direction forming a squall line. With a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) moving to the north, there was a gusty wind exceeding 40 m/s in some places. A gust of wind occurred around 18.30 (EET) in Dolny Śląsk (SW Poland) and after about 2 hours in Pomerania (N Poland). The pressure tendency during the transition reached 4−5 hPa. In the northern part of the country, gusts of wind were the largest and occurred several times in 2−3 hours. The system was accompanied by heavy precipitations, which in north Poland determine more than 60% of the average monthly rainfall. The effect of moving MCS was the damage of almost 80 thousand hectares of forests in Poland, which of more than 39 thousand hectares were classified to complete restoration.

Opis:
Forming of site index class of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in relation to forest site types (including their moisture variants) and soil units (type/subtype and also – in minor extent – geological genesis of soil parent material) was investigated. The research was conducted in the Bolesławiec, Głogów and Oława forest districts (SW Poland) in 348 Scots pine stands. The values of the pine site index got higher with increasing fertility of soil units and better forest site type, but only when plots of sandy soils where concerned. Site index was found to differ significantly between fresh than moisture forest sites and soil units. The study results demonstrated that on fresh soils of sandy texture site index of Scots pine was distinctly related even to minor differences of site properties that concerned both its moisture and fertility. Scots pine, by height growth, does not fully utilize the great nutrient retention of fine textured soils that concerned both fresh and moisture pedons. Fine textured soils should be designed for eutrophic broadleaved tree species planting only, which would enable to fully utilize the trophic potential of such soils. The relation between the site index and geological genesis of sand forming parent material of soils was found. The differences in pine growth on sands of other genesis were assumed to be a result of different sorting and mineral composition of these materials.

Opis:
The research was conducted in 268 pine stands on soils of sandy texture. In the paper 6 regression models for site index of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were presented. The soil properties enclosed in the models explained to 40−60% of the site index variability. In the regression analyses, the following soil properties were found to be the best variables that described the site index: pHKCl, contents of fine textural fractions, content of K and N, CaCO3 content, soil moisture conditions reflected in gleying occurrence in a soil profile and a thickness of a solum or of a humus horizon (depending on the site moisture). The CaCO3 content was found to be a useful variable for the site index models only unless other chemical soil parameters were available. In such cases occurrence of CaCO3 in models reflects an impact of K and Mg soil content on pine growth that results from strong intercorrelations between Ca, K and Mg contents in the investigated soils. The site index was higher when pine stands were overgrowing gleyic than non−gleyic soils. In the presented regression models the difference was estimated to be about 1.5 m.
