Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the trophism of soils in the strict nature protection area using the soil trophic index (SIG). The ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area (224.2 ha, created in 1965), is located in the north−eastern part of the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). The results of field and laboratory studies of the physicochemical and chemical properties of soils made it possible to determine their trophism by the SIG index. In the ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area, significant typological diversity of soils (10 subtypes) was found. The soils belong to the following trophic groups determined by the SIG: mixed coniferous forests (BM), mixed broadleaved forests (LM), alder forest (swamp broadleaved forest site) (Ol) and soil developed from low and transitional peatlands. The average value and range of SIG for particular trophic groups was: 19 (15−23) for BM, 26 (25−28) for LM, 34 for Ol was well as 23 for organic soil developed from low peatland and 21 for organic soil made from transitional peatland. Most of the ‘Rybitew’ area is covered by Podzols, Brunic Arenosols and Luvisol occurring in the trophic group of BM and LM. A lot of the soils undergo acidification process, which leads to a reduction in their trophism due to the excessive share of pine in the stand. This causes the podzolization process of Luvisols and significant acidification of the upper horizons, high C:N value and the moder type ectohumus formation, especially in Haplic Gleysols and Haplic Phaeozems. The large typological and trophic diversity of soils and the vegetation covering them in the ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area confirm the rightness of its creation.

Opis:
Beech and fir seed predation by rodents were studied in natural beech forests in the Babia Góra and Ojców National Parks. Studies were carried out in the mast and non−mast years. Similar to seed quantity available at the forest floor, rodent density was considered an important parameter in assessing predation of seeds by these small mammals. The quantity of collected seeds from experimental plots was the measure of rodent pressure on seeds. In addition, information about changing seed density on experimental plots over time was used to assess the pressure on beech seeds by rodents. Specification of these data allowed to determine the intensity of seed predation by rodents depending on seed quantity.

Opis:
Applied nucleation is one of silvicultural measures used in the afforestation of new areas and reclamation or rebuilding of the forest species composition. It involves sawing or planting small patches of trees, or nuclei as focal areas for succession, which spread out into the environment as soon as they produce seeds. The aim of the study was to create a plan of planted nuclei that facilitate, in the long term, the enrichment of the species composition and gradual reconstruction of forests in the Stołowe Mountains National Park (PNGS), south−western Poland. The plan was assumed to comprise the locations of nuclei with an indication of tree species designated for planting in a given nucleus. Stand descriptions and maps from 2014 were used to determine: (1) the expected proportion (tab. 1) as well as the need to change of the proportion of individual tree species (tab. 3), (2) the urgency of actions to be taken due to the difference between the desired and actual proportion of a given tree species in individual stands (tab. 2), (3) the proportion of nuclei with a given tree species (tab. 3) and (4) the location of nuclei (200 in total) taking into consideration the local needs to increase the proportion of a given species. To determine the proportion (and then the number) of nuclei with a given tree species we took into account: (1) the difference between the present and desired proportion of a given species (considering the most numerous one), (2) the frequency of species as desired admixture or co−dominant species, and (3) the occurrence of species in rare but important habitats, e.g. along streams or ravines (tab. 3). A map of the distribution of stands where introduction of a given tree species is desirable, including information on the urgency of this treatment was prepared (fig. 1). The PNGS forest area was divided into patches using polygons of different shape and area. The boundaries of the polygons were drawn separately for each tree species in such a way that the number of patches was equal to the number of nuclei designed for planting, and the number of stands in the two highest planting urgency classes within each of these patches was equal. One nucleus of a given tree species was planned to be established within a patch. Only proportion of European beech, silver fir and wych elm was lower than desired (tab. 3). Such an assessment did not reflect the scarcity of species in individual stands. In more than thousand cases, the urgency of introduction of a given species was very high (tab. 4). It was essential to establish some nuclei in a significant part of the PNGS forests (fig. 2).

Opis:
The study presents the design of sensual didactic path at the Centre for Education and Museum (OEM) of the Roztoczański National Park (south−eastern Poland). The design work was preceded by an architectural−landscape analysis carried out in 2014. List of trees and shrubs growing in the front part was made and plant communities, which are located between the main building and the river Świerszcz, were identified with Braun−Blanquet method. In total, 21 Magnoliophytina and 7 Pinophytina species were recorded. On the basis of phytosociological inventory we distinguished eight classes of Molinio−Arrhenatheretea, Epilobietea angustifolii and Phragmitetea. The conceptual design, based on a combination of natural and architectural elements, which will affect various senses was elaborated. Designed plant systems cover several formations (fig. 1). The sense of sight will be activated by the color of plants and small architecture elements. The sense of hearing will be stimulated by wind bells and flutes, and the sense of touch, by boxes of dried plant material. The smell will be affected by aromatherapeutic species of plants. The balance will be developed by movable walkways and wavy wooden walkways, mounted on a track that constitutes a part of a wooden platform, secured with a handrail. The designed structure will also be equipped with a trampoline, a grid−hammock and swing adapted for people using wheelchairs. Trail model placed at the entrance to the path and information board will support the educational offer. Pedestrian routes in the form of stone paths and wooden walkways, diverse in terms of texture, will create friendly to explore labyrinth, secured with a balustrade. Near paths, on higher flowerbeds and tables equipped with information signs, species characteristic for the Park will grow. Indication of protected and endangered status will be displayed. Descriptions of the plants will be provided both in traditional writing and in Braille system on a transparent plexiglass. The proposed components of plant system fully exploit the potential of a naturally diversified area around the OEM, and introduce architectural elements and pedestrian routes will allow also people with disabilities, feel as a full members of the community, when using the path.

Winter frosts, as well as worm, dry autumn, spring and early summer exerted positive effect on the white willow vascular cambium activity in the oncoming growing season. However the annual variation in tree−ring width depended, to the greatest degree, on air temperature in May−June and precipitation in April−July.

The contagion index [Gadow i in. 1998] is used to analyse a spatial pattern of trees in a natural forest stand occurring on a permanent study plot, located in a compartment 319 of the Białowieża National Park. By means of this index it is found that at a small spatial scale, the random occurrence of trees is a dominating mode of tree spatial pattern. At the same time, the share of trees forming biogroups is estimated to ca. 25% (at average). The results are compared with similar analysis performed by means of the Donnelly index and the Ripley's K function.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of competition on diameter growth of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) in forests with complex structure. For each tree we calculated set of 20 competition indexes in 4 variants for determining the scale of the competitors influence. The use of such a set of indices, allowed to describe accurately the competition between trees in the specific conditions for the particular tree species. Given species belong to the group of shade−tolerant trees. The species composition of the tree stands and their structure are the results of long−lasting natural processes, which is different than in the majority of Polish forests. The empirical material collected in the years 1993 and 2003 in four sample plots of 0.5 ha each located in natural stands of the Roztocze National Park in south−eastern Poland. The relationships between the competition and the growth were analysed using generalized additive models. This method allows to extend of the standard linear model, by taking into account non−linear function of each variable. One of the option of quantifying competition processes is the use of competition indices. The competition situation of an individual tree was described using distance−independ and distance−depend indices. Each of analysed species reacts differently on competition. Among the three analyzed species, the best competition index CI15 explained 48.3% of the variation diameter growth of European beech (tab. 2). The competition index CI3 explained only 26.1% of the variation diameter growth of European hornbeam (tab. 2). It turned out to be the worst result for the described species. The competition index CI14 explained 31.1% of the variation diameter growth of silver fir (tab. 2). Additional use of DBH in the models, increased values of the coefficient of determination, and extended the possibilities to use the developed models.

Opis:
The studies were conducted in the Gorce National Park (49°32'N, 20°07'E). The fieldwork was carried out on 34 permanent research plots. It was demonstrated in the studies that stands had significant positive and negative effects on the Rubus hirtus population. With the increase in the total and mean basal areas, the number and length of shoots, percentage of area coverage and annual length increment of Rubus hirtus individuals also increased. There was also a significant dependence of the number of shoots and individuals of Rubus hirtus on the basal area of beech. No significant relationship was found between Rubus hirtus plants and basal areas of spruce and fir trees. Stand age was another important factor. A positive correlation was found between the stand age and length of shoots and the percentage of area covered by blackberries. The number of trees on sample plots is also associated with age. A negative correlation was found between the parameters of Rubus hirtus plants (the number and length of shoots per 5 m2 and the degree of coverage) and the number of trees on sample plots. As there was previously no significant break in the canopy of the natural forest growing in the 'Dolina Łopusznej' reserve, no significant dominance of Rubus hirtus in the forest floor was noted. Blackberries usually established short main shoots (up to 25 cm) which were not potentially capable of producing roots, and thereby progeny ramets. As a result, the area occupied by blackberries usually did not exceed 15−30%.

Opis:
One of the most important objective of the active nature protection in national parks situated in Polish mountains is the restoration of mixed stands replaced by Norway spruce monocultures. Seven spruce stands situated in the Tatra National Park were measured in 1983−1986 and in 2001. The density of all stands decreased whereas the basal area and volume increased. In some of them the changes were considerable. The contribution of Fagus sylvatica and Abies alba, two most important tree species in natural mountain forests, changed only slightly and even decreased in three stands. Intensity of elimination of trees was related to their thickness – thin trees were removed from stands more often. Due to this way of thinning the variation of tree thickness diminished in all spruce stands. The densities of Fagus sylvatica and Acer pseudoplatanus saplings increased in all stands as a result of former planting. However, they are still to low for effective restoration of mixed stands. It can be concluded that mainly sanitary cuttings have been used recently in all stands. This line of management is not deliberately focused on the restoration of mixed stands and the diversification of their structure. It results in aging of dense spruce stands and increases the risk of future large−area disturbances due to strong winds and insect outbreaks.

The material collected from the permanent circular sample plots established in the Bieszczady National Park (BNP) was classified into four groups relating to their location (elevation of up to and above 1000 m a.s.l and exposition: northern and southern). A significant decline in volume growth was found at higher altitudes and in northern expositions. There were no statistically significant differences in volume ingrowth and loss in relation to the analysed topographic factors.
