Albies alba Mill.
Opis:
The paper reviews the current knowledge about the genetic variation, glacial and postglacial history of Polish populations of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.). This species occurs in the mountainous forests of central and southern Europe, from the Pyrenees up to the Balkans, where it is important from both ecological and economical points of view. The current knowledge about glacial and postglacial history of fir has been obtained from palynological and genetic studies. During the last ice age A. alba survived in the refugia in southern Europe, the central Apennines, the south of the Balkan Peninsula and the Central Massif in France. Two other refugia remained isolated – one in Calabria in the south of the Apennines and one in the Pyrenees. Furthermore the most likely routes of postglacial recolonization of silver fir as well as the introgression zone between them have been identified. In Poland, silver fir reaches the north−eastern border of its natural range. Several earlier studies based on isozymes and DNA markers (mitochondrial and chloroplast) have reported that the Polish populations of fir are characterized by lower levels of genetic variation within populations and higher genetic differentiation between them than other coniferous species. Fir probably migrated to Poland from two glacial refugia located in the Balkan and Apennines Peninsula. Notwithstanding, a recent study on Polish silver fir populations carried out with mtDNA marker, strictly maternally inherited, indicated that the species migrated to the Polish territory from the refugium in western Europe. However, this study did not take into account the possibility of participation of pollen pool of Balkan origin in the formation of the Polish populations of fir. Until now, there have been only a few reports concerning the gene pool of fir in Poland. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the knowledge about its genetic variation. In the course of several episodes of silver fir decline during the past century, its populations have decreased in size and currently are scattered throughout the entire European range. Reliable information on the distribution of genetic variation is a prere−quisite for proper management of forest genetic resources in a short−term and long−term perspective. The recognition of the existing genetic diversity is also the preliminary phase in development of an effective strategy for conservation of forest tree species gene pools.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) on tree ring width of larches from stands localised in southern part of Poland. Total ring as well as early− and latewood widths were taken in consideration. At the beginning authors used only standard processing and methods. Classic approach were insufficient to make some data useful for the correlation analysis, so authors decided to use more robust, custom methods.

Opis:
Mitochondrial DNA marker was applied to 10 populations of silver fir from Poland and one from Belarusia. These populations were located within and beyond the natural range of silver fir. The marker exhibited two highly conserved alleles (first – 230 bp and second – 150 bp) based on an insertion−deletion of 80 bp in the fourth intron of the mitochondrial nad5 gene. The geographical distribution of the maternally inherited mitochondrial variation is known to support the existence of at least two refugia with two recolonizing maternal lineages remaining largely separated throughout the range. Our results provide that in all studied populations the first allele was discovered. Therefore we postulate that the silver fir migrate to Poland from the refugium in western Europe (probably from central Italy).

Opis:
Knots are remnants of branches left on the stem or visible in the side of the tree. They affect wood quality and its final utilisation. The rate of self−pruning depends on many factors, including tree species. The balance of assimilation and disassimilation to a considerable degree determines natural clearance of branches. The aim of the study was to determine the dynamics of natural clearance of branches in European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) varying in breast height diameter and height. Analyses were conducted in stands of different age classes. After mean sample trees were felled (selected according to Urich I) macroscopic observations were conducted, classifying individual zones of the stem into separate classes according to the rate of self−pruning. Analysed traits were found to vary considerably. A strong relationship was shown between breast height diameter, tree height and the length of the knot−free zone. The crown of the analysed forest−forming species retains similar relative length throughout the life of a tree.

Opis:
In most cases, mechanical site preparation (MSP) is a precondition if high−quality (natural or artificial) regeneration of forests is to be achieved. However, the measures involved here may differ in terms of the level of intervention of the soil environment, at both the surface and deeper down. The choice of MSP methods should be based on climatic conditions, site type and the species whose renewal is sought, while the effect should improve conditions for the emergence and growth of the young generation of trees, with the influence on the soil environment being limited as far as possible. The research sought to compare physical and chemical features of the soils of the microhabitats created in clear−cut areas as a result of MSP using either an LPz double mould−board forest plough (furrow and ridge), an active plough (furrow and ridge) and a forest mill (belt and beyond the belt) as compared with unscarified soil. Investigated physical features included grain size (content of sand, silt and clay), bulk density and actual moisture, while the chemical ones: pHH2O and pHKCl, exchangeable acidity, total content of N and C and the C/N ratio, P2O5 content and base cations Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and Na+. The most invasive MSP method for the soil environment is the active plough, which leaves the ridge exposed to processes of the decomposition of organic matter (and the highest content of N, C, Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+). Equally, this method may pose the greatest threat of mineral components of the soil being leached, with impoverishment of the habitat ensuing. The forest mill in turn offers the least invasive MSP. Most of the physical and chemical features of soil (other than exchangeable acidity and pHH2O and pHKCl) both in the belt areas and beyond them differed little from the those characterising non−scarified soil. Also the analysed features determined for the furrows ploughed by the active or LPz ploughs or the belt prepared using the forest mill did not differ significantly.

The impact of differentiation thinning on various aspects of structure of exemplary Silver fir stand, including overall diameter distribution, diameter spatial diversity, dimension dominance and spatial distribution pattern, is analysed. Comparison of empirical diameter distribution (before and after thinning) with a the−oretical Liocourt−Meyer curve and the results of structural analysis, lead to the general conclusion that in case of relatively simple−structured Silver fir stands, achieving a desired, plenter−like structure is a longterm process, requiring a lot of consistency and patience.

Opis:
The paper presents the dendrochronological analysis of silver firs (Abies alba Mill.) growing in the canopy layer of the forest stands. We searched for the similarities in the rhythm of radial growth of studied trees and we analysed the response of these stands to the increment disturbances related to the occurrence of adverse climatic factors and the pressure from industrial pollution. The research material was collected in 30 pure and uneven−aged silver fir stands located in the Świetokrzyskie Mountains (central Poland). We investigated the effect of age of the stands and the conditions for their growth (location, forest habitat type) on an average tree−ring width. In order to detect similarities in the rhythm of radial growth of the surveyed stands, we grouped the raw chronologies by the means of the cluster analysis, using Ward's agglomeration procedure with 1−r distance (r – Pearson correlation coefficient). We assessed the incremental response of the investigated stands to the disturbances (situations of significantly reduced radial growth) using indicators of resistance, recovery and resilience proposed by Lloret et al. [2011]. We also studied the influence of the stand age and the forest habitat type on the response of analysed for stands to the detected disturbances. The shortest chronology consisted of 94 tree−rings, while the longest one of 137. Average length of the obtained silver fir chronologies was 119 years. Older fir stands characterised with narrower rings (r=–0.451, p=0.012). Neither the location, nor the forest habitat type are the factors determining the similarity of the rhythm of radial growth of silver firs from the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (p=0.243 and p=0.967 respectively). The extreme climatic conditions responsible for the majority of the short−term (one−year−long) incremental depressions are the factor of regional importance, which affects the growth of investigated trees. Older stands characterized with better possibilities of increment recovery after the disturbance than younger stands (p<0.001), which may be a result of the production of secondary crowns. No consistent differences in the indices of resistance and resilience were found among analysed stands.
