Opis:
Occurrence of Phytophthora spp. in soils of 21 forest nurseries and colonisation of Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies by isolates of P. cactorum, P. cinnamomi and P. plurivora from different host plants and water were studied. The presence of already mentioned species and P. gonapodyides were noticed in 2/3 of surveyed nurseries with domination of P. cactorum and P. plurivora. All isolates used colonised tissues of tested plants in vitro. In greenhouse trial the isolate of. P. cactorum from pansy did not cause any symptoms on spruce and the disease occurred only sporadically on beech seedlings.

Opis:
The impact of two different kinds of thinning on structural diversity of pure, even−aged Scots pine stand, is analysed. The real thinning, performed in the field, is compared with simulated computer thinning. Both thinnings make use of the same set of future (elite) trees, but differ in respect to method of marking of trees for removing. To determine the impact of thinning mode on stand structure, the overall diameter distributions, as well as some structural indices (diameter differentiation, dominance index, contagion index), before and after thinnings, are analysed and compared.

The study showed the genetic structure of nine Schrenk spruce stands, which represented altitude and geographical variants in the Tien−Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. Comparison between genetic structure of stands was based on frequencies of nuclear microsatellite (SSR) alleles occurring in three DNA loci. The total genetic differentiation of Schrenk spruce populations was low (FST=0.0651). Eight main groups of populations were distinguished in the dendrogram defined by Nei's genetic distances based on microsatellite markers.

Opis:
The paper describes the different types of cell death during the process of wood cell formation and terminological variety found in the literature concerned. The cell death referred to as programmed cell death (PCD), is genetically controlled and fundamental for the correct function of the whole organism of woody plants. The wood is mainly composed of the tracheary elements fulfil as conductors of water, fibers that provide the mechanical support and parenchyma cells playing an important role in the storage of water and reserve materials. The PCD of these elements constitutes the final stage of their differentiation and it is proceeded by: (i) cambial cell divisions, (ii) the enlargement of the cambial derivatives. The successive phase concerns (iii) deposition of secondary cell walls and its lignification. After that, the cell commences to digest protoplast, what means that each cell participates in the process of its own demise actively. However, the time and the sequence of the appearance of these phases are distinct among the woody cells. In the case of the tracheary elements the digestion of the protoplast occurs immediately after the tonoplast breakdown. Therefore, these cells are short−lived elements of wood. The life span of the fibers and the parenchyma cells is longer (from month for fibers and years in case of parenchyma cells). For the latter cells the positional information (distance from the cambium) and vicinity with short−lived tracheary elements are considered to be important for undergoing the process of death.

Opis:
In forestry management, artificially produced planting material is mainly used for renewal the tree population. Seedlings are cultivated in two systems: in the ground (the bare−root seedlings) and in controlled conditions (container seedlings). The aim of the study was to analyse the microsatellite markers of nuclear and chloroplast DNA, in terms of the number and frequency of rare, private, low frequency and common alleles in the planting material of Scots pine. The rare alleles included alleles occurring with less than 1% in analyzed group of seedlings and low frequency alleles occurred with a frequency of less than 25%. The private alleles were detected only in one group of seedlings. Genetic pools of seedlings from traditional (soil) and container production were compared. Planting material came from nurseries in the Olsztynek (N Poland) and the Oleszyce (S Poland) forest district. With the similar number of observed nDNA and cpDNA alleles in both analyzed locations, a higher number of rare, low frequency and private alleles was found within container seedlings. Most private alleles were a rare allele. Rare and private alleles are supposed to be responsible for adaptation to changing climatic conditions and a stressful environment. It seems reasonable to continue research on the meaning of rare and private alleles under conditions of strong selective pressure.

Opis:
The genetic variability of sessile oak (Quercus petraea L.) mature stand and its natural progeny was investigated. Comparison between genetic structure of parental and progeny trees was based on frequencies of nuclear microsatellite (SSR) alleles occurring in three DNA loci. A slight (4%) increase of gene pool between oak mature and progeny trees was revealed by heterozygosity level estimation, maintaining 86.3% of genetic similarity between generations. Also allele richness, partition probability of basic clustering and inbreed coefficient proved the high genetic similarity between parental and progeny of investigated oak trees. The gene flow occurred within the stands as far as rare alleles were transmitted or new ones appeared in the progenies. The results highlight the necessity of such a study for silvicultural measures taken in order to proceed natural or artificial regeneration in forest tree stand.

Opis:
Intraspecific differentiation in body size was investigated for Carabus arcensis, C. violaceus and Pterostichus niger populations inhabiting pine forests disturbed by the hurricane and non−disturbed ones. Post−hurri−cane stands were localized in Szast Reference Forest (Pisz Forest District, NE Poland) disturbed by the hurricane in July 2002 and left "untouched" as an experimental area. Non−affected stands were set in Maskulińskie Forest District (NE Poland). Beetles were sampled using pitfall traps. The hurricane contributed to significant reduction in both C. arcensis and C. violaceus body length. However, an opposite trend was observed for P. niger, which increased considerably in body size in disturbed stands compared to control ones. The most pronounced changes were observed in 2007. Differences in habitat preferences and food resources utilization of C. arcensis, C. violaceus and P. niger are discussed.

Opis:
We looked at the patterns of differentiation at a set of phenotypic traits of Scots pine populations derived from different environmental conditions of the species distribution range in Poland. The growth traits were tested over 47 years at the provenance trial experiment in the Carpathians. The phenotypic differentiation of the populations was compared to diversity estimates at a set of ten nuclear microsatellite markers. Scots pine populations were highly differentiated concerning diameter at breast high, stand volume, stem straightness and crown width according to the prove− nance and climatic zones. At the same time a low genetic diversity for microsatellite markers and no evidence of population structure was found among proveniences. Local populations from the Carpathian Mountains had lower genetic variation and weaker growth compared to lowland provenances. Among the tested populations Scots pine from lowlands were characterized by the great growth potential and good adaptation to the severe climate of the Carpathians. Populations that showed high quantitative traits differentiation were genetically homogenous at the neutral loci. The results indicate that there are some regions in the genome under selection that drive species adaptive variation.

The impact of differentiation thinning on various aspects of structure of exemplary Silver fir stand, including overall diameter distribution, diameter spatial diversity, dimension dominance and spatial distribution pattern, is analysed. Comparison of empirical diameter distribution (before and after thinning) with a the−oretical Liocourt−Meyer curve and the results of structural analysis, lead to the general conclusion that in case of relatively simple−structured Silver fir stands, achieving a desired, plenter−like structure is a longterm process, requiring a lot of consistency and patience.

Opis:
Paper presents the analysis of spatial distribution as well as spatial diversity of DBH of living trees and trees of different biosocial class in 34 year old pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands of different initial densitiy. The following indices were applied: CE index (spatial distribution) and TD (spatial diversity of diameters). Living trees were distributed regularly in all analysed stands. The lower initial density, the more evenly trees were spaced. Taking into consideration the biosocial position of trees it can be stated that regularity was observed only in case of dominant trees (II Kraft's class). Trees of the other social classes were mostly randomly scattered. Groups of trees were never observed. Analysed pine stands showed small spatial diversity of diameters between nearest neighbors, both in case of living trees and trees of different social classes. The lowest diversity was observed in case of neighbors from predominand and codominant Kraft's class.
