Opis:
The study assessed the intensity of Polish konik browsing in mixed coniferous forest (BM), alder swamp forest (OL) and pine swamp forest (BB) of different canopy closure and shrub or ground vegetation cover. The study was conducted in Polish konik enclosure situated in the Roztoczański National Park (eastern Poland) in August 2011. We examined mean browsing intensity and the tendency of horses to browse along 100 m zone from the pasture. The field study was conducted at three parallel transects set in 40 m intervals in each analysed forest habitat, starting at the forest edge and oriented towards the forest interior. Along the transects, 5×2 m plots were established in 10 m intervals. Within each plot the untouched current twigs and twigs browsed by koniks (up to 2 m above the ground) were counted separately, and categorized by a tree and shrub species. For each species 30 samples of complete twigs and twigs browsed by koniks were collected. Twigs were dried by 72 h in 60°C and weighted with accuracy up to 0.001 g. We estimated the dry mass of shoots available within the plot and taken by horses. Generally, koniks were using each studied forest stand proportionally to the mean browse mass. A factorial regression indicates that regardless to the available mass in a given forest stand, horses foraging intensity towards the forest interior was varying significantly. Koniks entered further into the forest the more willingly the more open the forest canopy was. Openness of the forest habitat could indirectly influence the pattern of forest penetration by horses, because of the grazed ground vegetation there.

Opis:
The field study was conducted within an acclimatization enclosure in Radziejowa Valley and in a clearing in Tyskowa Valley, close to Baligród (Bieszczady Mts., south−eastern Poland) during two seasons: spring and summer. The aim of this study was to assess browsing intake by Polish koniks (tarpan type) in enclosures and free ranging conditions. The measurements were done along transects in the enclosure and around the clearing, inward of the forest stand. In all scenarios, koniks preferred shrubs (rose and plum) mostly avoiding trees. The amount of taken browse depended on the amount of preferred shrubs available.

Opis:
Analyses concerned the spatial characteristics of black stork nesting in relation to the occupied habitats and nest distance to chosen landscape elements. No essential changes were found in nesting characteristics between analysed periods of 1983−1989 and 1999−2008. Storks mostly located nests on oaks, birches and alders. In the direct vicinity of a nest, pine and fir stands (or alder in damp habitats) dominated. There were no statistically essential differences (p>0.05) between nest distances to the same landscape element in both analysed periods. Storks kept the biggest distance to routes and large potential foraging areas. Distance to settlements was similar to other stork nests.

Opis:
This study aimed at quantitative spatial analysis of forest cover transformation in the Western Bieszczady Mts. based on two areas: Bieszczady Wysokie Mts. (from 1852 to 2004) and Baligród Forest District (from 1938 to 1996). Raster maps were created to illustrate two cover types: forest and non−forest. Using ACSII files and Fregstats 3.3 program, landscape metrics were calculated for whole landscape and both cover types. Landscape structure became simplified. Forest cover area increased with simultaneous patch number decrease and aggregation degree increase. Non−forest cover underwent inverse changes, such as area and aggregation degree decrease. Patch number change differed in both areas in relation to various processes of patch creation.
