Opis:
Studies upon the individual quality of roe deer males originating from Lublin Upland and obtained during two hunting seasons (2008/2009 and 2010/2011) with diverse climatic conditions of winter revealed different weights of carcass and antlers as well as various morphometric traits of antlers (length of tines, length of front and back branches). Data from bi−factorial variance analysis taking into account the interaction between animal’s age and the obtaining date indicate that body and antlers weight variability as well as the length of the front branches are determined mainly by animal’s age and the obtaining date, while the tine length and length of the back branches are greatly affected by animal’s age.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to present the status of the implementation of the National Program of the Forest Cover Extension (KPZL) in the period 1995−2013, and analyse the results of the survey on the major factors limiting the Program's execution after Poland entered the European Union in 2004. The study is based on the official statistical data and a mail questionnaire survey carried out in all local public authorities all over the country. Altogether 203 responses out of 380 public authority units were collected (53.4%). Since the beginning of the 1990s, the area of agricultural lands afforested annually was successively increasing, reaching its peak in 2003 (26.5 thous. ha). Since 2004 however, the annual rate of afforestation has been rapidly decreasing, and reached 4.1 thous. ha in 2013. Since 2001, altogether 159.3 thous. ha of agricultural lands were afforested, which amounted to 40% of the target defined in the KPZL. The spatial differentiation of the Program execution is very high, and, as a rule, there are too few new forests established in areas of the acute afforestation needs, i.e. in central and southern parts of the country. The most important obstacles in the KPZL implementation after Poland's accession to the European Union include: enlargement of the minimal plot area supported with the afforestation premium from 0.1 ha to 0.3 ha in 2004 and up to 0.5 ha in 2007, lack of financial support for afforestation of lands within Natura 2000 areas, which are not yet covered by protection plans, high competitiveness of direct payments for agricultural production compared to afforestation premium, as well as complicated procedures for granting financial support, scarcity of promotion of financial support for afforestation among farmers and trainings for them, and an exclusion of permanent grasslands from afforestation. The study shows that the current rate of afforestation is insufficient for reaching the general target defined in the KPZL (afforestation of 680 thousand ha of lands in the period 2001−2020). The breakdown in the program implementation seems to be an unexpected outcome of Poland accession to the EU and results from ongoing economic and social transformation in rural areas. The main factors influencing its depression appear to be long−term, thus it is rather unlikely that the unfavorable trends in the rate of afforestation may become reversed in the coming years.

Opis:
The analysis of population density indicators and hunting exploitation of brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in the Lublin Upland (eastern Poland) hunting club indicates that these parameters reached low and very low level resulting in the reduction or suspension of hunting acquisition. Analysis of body weight of obtained hares indicates that despite the low density of the species, it does not differ significantly from the value of this parameter in other regions of the country at different levels of population density. Thus, achieved results are confirmation that the population density index does not determine hare body weight. Statistically significant differences in body weight in the group of juveniles and adults regardless of gender were found, and there were no clear and statistically significant differences between males and females, both in the group of juveniles and adults (tab.). Analysis of the age and gender structure among obtained hares (fig. 2 and 3) shows a clear dominance of adult animals, both males and females. These results confirm that in spite of the low population density, the estimated possibilities of the reproductive potential are high, and the cause of a population decline and continued low density are the factors from the outside of the population.

Opis:
The data on the distribution and number of the capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in Poland for the period from the end of the 20th century up to 2017−2018 is presented. The capercaillie is a sedentary forest grouse living in old mountain forests and within the boreal zone. Since more than a century, the decrease in the numbers of the species has been observed, interlinked with the extinction of isolated populations. Within the present borders of Poland, a 1925 questionnaire study noted 2200−2700 individuals. In the 1960s, the national population was estimated at 1700−2000 birds, living in five isolated populations. In 1985−1995, the population numbers of the capercaillie dropped to approx. 466−700 individuals in four regions, and in 2000 it was estimated at 470−570 birds. According to the results of the censuses performed in 2017−2018, the size of the capercaillie population risen to 523−631 individuals and 59−69 lekking grounds. Currently the capercaillie occurs in four isolated regions. These are the Western Carpathians (the Beskid Sądecki, Tatry, Gorce, Babia Góra, Beskid Żywiecki, and the Beskid Śląski ranges) where 284−326 individuals live and 35−41 leks are active. In the Solska and the Lasy Janowskie Forests (Lublin region), the population was estimated at 132−184 individuals and 12−13 lekking grounds. In the Augu− stów Forest (Podlasie region) 36−46 individuals and 5−7 leks were found. In the Bory Dolnośląskie Forest, where native capercaillies got extinct during the last decade, the reintroduction program resulted in the rebuilding of their 65−75 population (with 6−7 leks). The restitution of the species in the Piska Forest has begun. During the last 20 years, populations in the Carpathian national parks have been stable, although fluctuating in numbers. The increase in the number of individuals in the Augustów Forest as well as in the Sądecki and Beskid Śląski Mountains is an after−effect of the release of birds from breeding centers or translocations. In other strongholds, fluctuations or decreases have been recorded, including wisible in the Beskid Żywiecki Mountains.
