Opis:
Forestry management in anthropo−transformed habitats is characterized by a very high risk. The formation of waste as well as flooding of tree stands by salty water from different sources of mining and processing of coal is an important issue on the industrial areas. The introduction of the pollution load in the form of saline water leads to increased soil salinity, which can damage or cause the dieback of individual trees, tree stands and whole forest ecosystems. The aim of the research was to (i) analyze the changes in forest soils on the area flooded by water leaked from the waste reservoir, (ii) assess the possibility of this soil self−purification from chlorides and sulfates and (iii) estimate the possibility of reclamation of this land for forestry purposes. The study was conducted in Katowice Forest District (southern Poland). Soil samples for physico−chemical analysis were collected in 2015. The results of chemical analyzes of surface soil layers made in 2013 and 2014 were also used. The content of chlorides and sulphates in the soil was used as one of the key indicators to assess the level of soil salinity. In the year of the damage occurrence, in surface horizons it significantly exceeded the threshold value, but declined in subsequent years to a level below this value even in the area of the greatest damage. However, our analysis indicate an accumulation of chlorides and sulphates in the soil at a depth of 100−120 cm, as well as the accumulation of sodium cations. This demonstrates the difficulties with the self−purification of soil or continuous supply of pollutants from the waste reservoir. Currently, surface soil horizons meet the criteria of not−salinized soils, which does not indicate a need for change in land use. After the surface preparation and technical work used in forestry practice, the damaged area can be designed for the reintroduction of forest trees.

Opis:
Some trace elements, because of their high capacity for bioaccumulation, can pose a threat to the adequate development and growth of plants, animals and humans, which concerns mostly mercury (Hg) and its compounds that characterize by strong toxic properties. The aim of the research was to compare the Hg content in the Arenosols of arable fields (food plots), referred to as hunting plots, as well as in the soils of neighbouring forests. Research was performed in the Szubin Forest District (northern Poland). To assess the effect of mercury on the environment, we used dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) as a bioindicator. The samples were collected from the soil profiles from 8 hunting plots and 8 woodland areas in close vicinity of these plots. Mercury was assayed with the atomic absorption spectrometry applying the AMA 254 analyser. The mercury contamination factor (CF) and the potential ecological risk index (Er) values were determined with the local Hg value of the geochemical background (5.7 µg/kg). Assuming such very low Hg concentration as the reference value for the parent material of the soils, the mean CF value points to a considerable anthropogenic mercury accumulation in the surface horizons. The soils of hunting plots as well as forest soils are not contaminated with mercury. The total Hg content falls within the natural content level and reaches in the mineral horizons – from 3.5 to 20.7 µg/kg, while in the litter layer – from 60.3 to 166.7 µg/kg. The mercury bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) values point to a clear accumulation in the aboveground parts of dandelion. We found a significantly positive correlation between the content of mercury and organic carbon as well as the clay fraction. The mercury content in the soils under study varies and it depends on the soil origin and the effect of anthropogenic factors. In the forest soils of the Pomorze and Kujawy Province the mercury content of the geochemical background is relatively low. The areas of the Szubin Forest District do not undergo an excessive anthropopressure and sources of Hg depositions in soil surfaces can be the deposition of mercury from air.

Opis:
The paper verifies the hypothesis about the cause−effect relationship of forest decline, on the basis of the observed retreat of the forest edge line from a mink farm contaminating the nearby soils with excessive mineral nitrogen concentrations. Soil analyses were carried out along with an analysis of elemental composition of pine needles which showed and increased content of nitrogen exceeding the tolerance threshold level for the occurrence of mycorrhizal associations.

Opis:
In recent years the condition of spruce stands in Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki (S Poland) has decreased drastically. This process consists of many factors. One of them is intense anthropopressure, therefore monitoring of forest pollution is extremely important. An analysis of four chosen trace elements (Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn) in soil and bark of Norway spruce from 7 locations in Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki was conducted. Tree bark was considered as a very good bioindicator of environmental gaseous and dust pollution. The concentrations of investigated elements in the material did not exceed the physiological concentrations, only in the bark of spruce trees from Beskid Żywiecki elevated levels of cadmium (2 mg/kg d.w.) were measured.

Opis:
The presented research aimed to assess the influence of illegal dumping sites on changes in the phosphorus, nickel and lead content and the phosphatases activity in 0−20 cm top soil−layer. The samples were taken in the Bydgoska Forest (northern Poland) from four points. At plots W1 (debris and ceramic waste, glass, plastics, metals, textiles and used electrotechnical equipment), W2 (electrotechnical equipment, tyres and textiles) and W3 (wastes of organic origin from households as well as cut grass and residue from garden) samples were collected directly under illegally deposited landfill sites. The control plot (K) was located far from the determined waste landfill sites and beyond the range of their effect. We determined: organic carbon (Corg), total and available phosphorus as well as the content of total and available lead and nickel and the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatase. Uncontrolled landfill sites significantly influenced soil properties, which may lead to changes in the phosphomonoesterases activity of soil and the nutrient content. The study concluded that the composition of waste at W3 site had a less negative impact on the soils than at W1 and W2 sites. In the soil from landfills W3 we observed high phosphorus availability (AF 14.9%). The lowest resistance (RS) for alkaline and acid phosphatases was found in soils from the area of dumping sites W1 and W2, while the highest RS was determined for W3. The content of nickel and lead in the soil samples qualifies them into the category of soils with natural content of these compounds. Simple correlation showed clearly that organic matter was particularly implicated in the activity of phosphomonoesterases and the content of lead or nickel. Based on the clustering with Ward's method it was stated that cluster 2 includes two soil samples (W1 and W2) due to its lower phosphatase activity and organic carbon, available phosphorus and total lead content. A high variation in the activity phosphatase under study in soil W2 confirms a high coefficient of variation (>36%).
