Opis:
The impact of two different kinds of thinning on structural diversity of pure, even−aged Scots pine stand, is analysed. The real thinning, performed in the field, is compared with simulated computer thinning. Both thinnings make use of the same set of future (elite) trees, but differ in respect to method of marking of trees for removing. To determine the impact of thinning mode on stand structure, the overall diameter distributions, as well as some structural indices (diameter differentiation, dominance index, contagion index), before and after thinnings, are analysed and compared.

The paper presents results of studies on population variability of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) cones. The studies were based on statistical analysis of cone morphological characteristics, seed scales and bract of populations originating from 12 sites. The analysis proved morphological variability of cones and scales. They did not show geographical variation and did not clearly confirm their demographic variation. The edaphic conditions and genetic diversity were found to affect the demonstrated variability.

Paper presents the analysis of spatial distribution as well as spatial diversity of DBH of living trees and trees of different biosocial class in 34 year old pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands of different initial densitiy. The following indices were applied: CE index (spatial distribution) and TD (spatial diversity of diameters). Living trees were distributed regularly in all analysed stands. The lower initial density, the more evenly trees were spaced. Taking into consideration the biosocial position of trees it can be stated that regularity was observed only in case of dominant trees (II Kraft's class). Trees of the other social classes were mostly randomly scattered. Groups of trees were never observed. Analysed pine stands showed small spatial diversity of diameters between nearest neighbors, both in case of living trees and trees of different social classes. The lowest diversity was observed in case of neighbors from predominand and codominant Kraft's class.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the spatial variation of air temperature on the clear−cut and gap as well as to compare the distribution of thermal conditions on both areas. The research was carried out in Rogów Forest Experimental Station (51.827023°N, 19.922315°E) on a clear−cut with a width of 60 m and on a gap (of an ellipsoid shape; 40×70 m). The measurements were carried out in two series: spring−summer, in the period when the height of the sun during the day conditioned inflow of direct solar radiation to any surface (May−August 2006), and autumn, when direct radiation was limited by neighboring stands (October−November 2006). Average values of air temperature on the gap in the spring−summer period differed in individual parts by 2.2°C, while on the clear−cut by 1.0°C. In the autumn, thermal diversity on both research plots was similar (0.8°C on average). The thermal diversity within the research plots was particularly marked in the case of extreme air temperature values. Differences between minimum temperature values in the spring−summer period amounted to 1.8°C on the clear−cut, and 1.3°C on the gap, while in the autumn to 1.0°C on both research plots. Higher differentiation occurred in the case of the maximum temperature: the differences in spring−summer equaled 3.1°C on the clear−cut and 8.7°C on the gap, and in the autumn 2.7 and 3.1°C, respectively. In May, three late frost days occurred on the clear−cut, while on the gap the no frost was recorded. All late frost situations occurred during radiation weather characterized by weak wind blowing across the clear−cut. The diurnal course of air temperature in the spring−summer period was dependent on the range of shadow of the position, while in the autumn these trends were similar in each position.

Opis:
Nowadays in forestry, we observe an increase in threats that rise the uncertainty and risk of the forest management. This is caused, inter alia, by increasing intensity of forest and environmental damage as well as by the conflict of expectations for the use of forest resources. As a result, there is a problem of achieving the goals of sustainable development and adaptation of the forest ecosystems to new challenges. The aim of the presented study was to assess the regional variety of the need and the urgency of stands conversion. The feature was determined for all stands of the State Forests older than 20 years. Three assessment criteria were selected: (A) silvicultural target (compatibility of the species composition with the planned one), (B) stands stability (resultant from 5 auxiliary sub−indices), and (C) stock level (including 2 auxiliary sub−indices). The majority of stands has consistent species composition (over 60% in total), however only a small fraction of stands was found with a species composition incompatible with the planned one (average 6.34%). Stands with medium stability accounted for about 70%, while those with poor growing stock status make up about 70% of stands under analysis. The regional diversification of the needs for stands reconstruction seems to be strongly correlated with the incompatibility of stand’s species composition with habitat conditions. The largest fraction of stands requiring conversion was observed in Wrocław, Kraków and Katowice regional directorates of the State Forests. This situation may change in the future due to dynamic changes resulting from modifications of the climate and the deterioration of health condition of dominant Scots pine stands in central and north parts of Poland. Private forests were not taken into consideration in this research. It may impact the overall picture in regions of the high share of private forest ownership.

The purpose of our study was to estimate genetic diversity of Prunus avium in natural populations. Genetic studies were carried out in 27 wild cherry populations sampled from several Polish tree stands. Chloroplast DNA variation was assessed and two haplotypes were identified. Theirs distribution divided populations into two groups. Haplotype H1 was present in 11 of 27 populations and H2 in 16 populations. The PCR− −SSR technique was used to detect nuclear DNA diversity. Three highly polymorphic SSR (microsatellite) primer pairs were used to describe the genetic variation. Heterozygosity values ranged from 0.500 to 0.633, while gene diversity (PIC) from 0.75 to 0.79. This study demonstrated that SSR fingerprinting with cpDNA diversity, can be used for preliminary characterization of Prunus avium populations.

Opis:
Genetic diversity is one of the key requirements for the adaptive potential of forest trees. This study presents the analysis of 30 Polish Scots pine provenances. According to the RAPD method, three 10−mer primers: OPE−08, OPE−09 and OPF−07 (Operon Technologies) were used to generate most polymorphic bands of amplified DNA among 450 individuals. The genetic similarity index was calculated after Nei (1987) matching coefficient and results were presented as dendrogram of genetic distances obtained from cluster analysis (UPGMA) for all populations. The Scots pine provenances were also characterized by height and diameter at the breast height „DBH” traits and were compared with the genetic diversity level. All studies populations were characterized by genetic diversity GST=0,215. This coefficient of inter−popu− lation variation was lower than the level of the differentiation within populations (HT=0,262), as it was reported for other Pine species. The results from these studies may be useful to the forest practice to help with decisions on the establishment of stable forest stands; they are also used in the forest genetic resources conservation programmes.
