Opis:
Preliminary studies on frost−hardiness of the current year shoots of silver fir were conducted between the autumn of 1999 and the spring of 2000 on the 20−25 year old saplings, collected in 13 sample plots distributed throughout the Świętokrzyski National Park. The diffusion of electrolytes from shoots and needles kept in a freezer at the temperature of −33°C was analysed using the Dexter's (1932) method. The highest degree of frost−hardiness of shoots and needles was found in February. In spring the resistance to low temperatures declined faster in shoots than in needles. The investigations showed significant differences in the frost−hardiness of young silver firs from different sample plots.

Opis:
Numerous examples of silver fir stands growing outside its geographical range in northern Poland suggest that this species could be used in a greater extend in creation of managed forest stands. Climatic conditions could potentially constrain the use of this species in some parts of country. The objective of this work was to determine the potential climatic range of Abies alba in Poland. The bioclimatic envelope models were used to identify areas in which selected climatic variables show the same range of variability as observed within natural range of this species. Climatic data with 10' spatial resolution were used. The outcome of the analysis depends to large extent on the demarcation of natural range (in which the variability of tolerable climatic conditions is assessed). The model basing on the climatic conditions in whole natural range of silver fir in Europe suggest that almost whole area of Poland is suitable to fir, but models basing only of climatic conditions in Polish part of its natural range are much more conservative. In the last case the difference in extent between natural range and potential climatic range was smaller. As genetic variability of Polish fir populations is rather low, they are supposed to have constrained adaptative abilities. Forest managers should not focus on planting silver fir outside its natural range, but they rather should consider reintroduction of fir in parts of natural range from where it retreated in 20th century.

Opis:
Field elm (Ulmus minor Mill.) is distributed mainly across central and southern Europe. In Poland this species occurs in the lowlands and foothills, where it grows mainly in the floodplain forests along the rivers. U. minor exists in a variety of climatic and ecological conditions. It is capable to tolerate floods as well as drought. Currently, most populations of U. minor are small and fragmented resulting from human activity and Dutch elm disease. Moreover, in the natural field elm populations, vegetative propagation by root suckers or sprouting can be observed. All these factors may affect the level of genetic variation of U. minor populations in Poland. In the present study, we determined the level of genetic variation and the clonal diversity of twelve natural U. minor populations in Poland (407 individuals) using eight nuclear microsatellite loci. The obtained results indicate that the studied field elm populations are characterized by low level of genetic variation (He=0.382; Ho=0.555; A=7.0). Additionally, the high level of clonality in field elm populations was estimated. The clonality level of examined elm populations varied among them, and in some cases was very high. Out of the 407 individuals analysed for clonal structure only 61 multilocus genotypes were identified. Furthermore, only one genotype was identified in the three study populations of field elm, which means that in each of these populations all trees belong to one genet. The values of genotypic richness (R) were heterogeneous among populations, with mean 0.148. The knowledge on the genetic diversity and the clonal structure of U. minor populations is essential to make future decisions regarding conservation of genetic resources of this species in Poland.

Opis:
We analyzed data on wood resources of small−leaved lime in the forests managed by the State Forests, depending on the type of occurrence, age of trees, type of forest site, soil and region of the country. Particular attention was paid to the mature and close−to−mature stands with lime occurring in the overstory and undergrowth. We pointed regions and habitat conditions that are most favorable for the growth of small−leaved lime, from the point of view of its productivity. As for January 1st, 2016, the wood resources of lime amounts to 5.4 million m3 of timber. The largest part occurs in Wrocław and Olsztyn Regional Directorates of the State Forests. About 89% of the total timber resources of lime is located in the stands overstory. The timber volume of mature and close−to−mature stands (aged over 60) is 71% of the total volume. 50% of the wood resources of this layer is located in stands with 10 and 20% share of lime. The greatest average timber volume (255 m3/ha) was stated in stands with the share of lime at the level of 90%, while the average volume of the overstory is nearly 160 m3/ha. Also the wood resources of lime trees in undergrowth grows with the growing share of this species to reach about 90 m3/ha in the case of pure lime undergrowth. The largest volume is characteristic for stands with lime trees in the IV and V age classes. The lime stands growing on fresh forest and upland forest sites, and on brown and rusty soils are the most productive. The richest lime stands in the country, growing on fresh and moist forest habitats, reach over 500 m3/ha. We observe a small but steady increase in the share of small−leaved lime in the stands managed by the State Forests, in terms of both surface and volume.

This article is the synthesis of the study on the ecophysiology of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) conducted from 1998 to 2004. Seedlings of silver fir originating from different provenances were used for the experiments in a climate chamber, a nursery and in natural conditions. One of the most important results of this study was the parameterization of the model of silver fir photosynthesis. It was also found that phenotypic plasticity of some morphological and physiological patterns of silver fir at the young age was lower than that of the other tree species and depended on seedlings origin.

Opis:
Silver fir is one of the main tree species of mountain and foothill forests in Poland that in optimal conditions forms pure stands with multi−layer structure. The study objective is to present differences in height and diameter growth rates of firs growing in upper stand layers and in the undergrowth. The research was conducted in 12 fir stands located in the Beskid Niski Mts. (southern Poland). In each stand height and diameter at breast height (dbh) were measured for 25 fir trees in order to develop a height curve. The first canopy layer included trees that were higher than ⅔ Hmax established from the height curve of the tree with the largest dbh. Height and diameter were measured on eight trees selected from the first canopy layer. An increment core was extracted at breast height in order to estimate the tree age. From the third canopy layer, which included trees higher than 2 m with dbh below 7 cm, five trees were selected. After cutting those trees, the length of the last ten branch whorls was measured. Five−year ring width measurements starting from the bark towards the pith were done at the stem cross−sections obtained at breast height. The number of rings was counted on remaining stumps. Height growth rate was defined as the height at the base age of 100 years (eq. 1). For the first canopy layer, the height growth rate was on average 31.8 m, while for the undergrowth it was 12.1 m. There was also large difference between diameter growth rate of the first stand canopy layer (55.7 cm) and undergrowth (18.3 cm). Both differences were significant at p=0.05. These discrepancies could result from low amount of light reaching the forest floor. The correlation between height and diameter growth rates and undergrowth tree age was negative in both cases. Long periods of shading result in smaller number of firs reaching the first canopy layer. Assuming that uneven−aged stand structure is optimal for that species, it should be characterized by a spatial variability (mosaic) of various canopy layers including even−aged patches with sparse canopy closure as well as gaps where fir regeneration will be initiated having favorable growth conditions.
