Opis:
In recent years, the idea of sustainable development has become one of the most important requirements of civilization. Development of sustainable construction involves the need for the introduction of innovative technologies and solutions that will combine beneficial economic effects with taking care of the health and comfort of users, reducing the negative impact of the materials on the environment. Composites obtained from the use of waste materials are part of these assumptions. These include modified epoxy mortar containing waste wood fibres, described in this article. The modification consists in the substitution of sand by crushed waste boards, previously used as underlays for panels, in quantities of 0%, 10%, 20%, 35% and 50% by weight, respectively. Composites containing up to 20% of the modifier which were characterized by low water absorption, and good mechanical properties, also retained them after the process of cyclic freezing and thawing.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the cellulolytic activity of a strain of Trichoderma viride in the presence of three lignocellulosic substrates, i.e. wheat, barley, and maize straw, in different temperatures (25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C). Research related to the biosynthesis of enzymes was conducted using the deep method, whereas enzyme activity was assessed on solid media with added carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The assessment was based on the activity index (AI) determined for each object of research. The obtained results indicate that T. viride produces cellulolytic enzymes, and that their level of activity depends on the type of material introduced into the culture as a lignocellulosic substrate as well as on the temperature. The highest value of AI was found in objects with added maize straw. The optimal temperature for the biosynthesis of cellulolytic enzymes equalled 30 °C.

Opis:
Polymer composites are the materials that can be successfully used in the places where high mechanical strength and chemical resistance as well as low absorbability are required. These unique features of polymer composites are obtained mainly due to a suitably selected binder, i.e. a synthetic resin. At the same time, this component accounts for the high production costs of these materials. Partial substitution of the resin with glycolisates obtained using poly(ethylene terephthalate) waste (PET), helps reduce the price of polymeric mortars, while maintaining favourable physicomechanical properties. This modification method also has a beneficial effect on the environment, as it allows the utilisation of a very common waste, which is difficult to dispose of. The article concerns three types of resin mortars, i.e. epoxy, polyester and polyester with the addition of colloidal silica, modified with PET glycolisate. On the basis of the obtained data set and database knowledge mining techniques, such as discriminant analysis and decision trees, it was shown to what extent the type of resin and the presence of an added modifier differentiate the mortar properties. The results obtained with both methods were compared. It was confirmed that these techniques are effective both in the classification and prediction of the type (selection) of mortar in the process of designing new composites.

Opis:
Certain ambiguities in definitions ofbulky waste are the cause for many problem s, especially in terms of its management. Therefore the still developing bulky waste management in Poland demonstrates a high degree of diversity. The paper presents different systems of collecting bulky waste items against a wider background of bulky waste management in Western Europe. Creating a scale of problems connected to amounts of generated bulky waste items and organizing their collection the paper identifies also other aspects, like the possibility of using furniture refuse in the process of producing alternative fuels.

The research is related to solving the problem of rational use of materials and to the creation of resource-saving technologies for the protection of the environment from pollution. Sorption technologies are quite effective in wastewater treatment, but most sorbents are quite expensive, and their regeneration raises the question of recycling of spent solutions. The cheapness and availability of raw material base of biosorbents makes these technologies attractive for wastewater treatment. The research is aimed at investigation of the ways to effectively utilize the spent sorbents, which are obtained after water purification, in the production of building materials. The obtained results allow creating a complex low-waste technology of water demineralization and purification from heavy metal ions.

Opis:
The problem of utilizing plant wastes of the agro-industrial complex is equally important and urgent. In this regard, it is advisable to develop a complex technology of plant waste application to solve the ecological problems of environmental pollution with heavy metals. Modification of walnuts shells with orthophosphoric acid has proven to be a promising process for obtaining the biosorbents with the efficient sorption properties. It was found out that the increase in the concentration of inorganic acid in modification time promotes the improvement in sorption capacity. Such biosorbents can be used in low-waste water demineralization systems. The utilization of waste biosorbents through the use in the composition of building materials is effective from an economic point of view. It was shown that the biosorbent acts as a fine additive; the increase in normal density and acceleration in hardening time takes place. At the same time, the compressive strength of the cement with the application of biosorbents decreases slightly. The results show that the modified walnuts shells have a slightly adverse effect on the hardening time of cement.

There is a need to create a low-cost and effective resource-saving technology for wastewater treatment contaminated with paintwork materials, which would allow reusing water in the production cycle of the enterprise. Studies have been carried out to prove the possibility of using spent technological solutions in the joint purification of sewage from galvanic and paint and varnish industries. The developed technology enables to reduce the costs of the enterprises for its cleaning and negative impact on the environment, reduce the load on urban treatment facilities, and reduce the equipment costs.
