Opis:
In pursuance of the Saudi vision 2030, the Al-Hasa municipality has been allocating a total of US$ 60.1 million since 2018 to the implementation of a modern Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) management system. In addition to the improved old components, the system involves six new-engineered cells, five of which will be gradually implemented in progresses, two waste sort-out lines station, and LFG energy recovery. The present research aimed at investigating the environmental and economic impacts of this MSW management system. For this purpose, the authors applied the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Life Cycle Costs Analysis (LCCA) approaches. The main results showed that the air quality was not affected. For instance, gas emission, like carbon monoxide, was less than 0.1 ppm. However, soil and groundwater were contaminated due to leachate infiltration from the uncontrolled cell in which Chloride, Nitrate, and Sulfate exceeded the maximum limits. As for noise, it was found to be high near the sorting-out station at 71.1 Leq dBA. In terms of the financial aspect, the improved MSW management was relatively feasible despite its high costs over its revenues. Thus, the negative cash-flow could be supplemented by setting household taxes at US$ 29 per capita per year, which makes the project cost-effective. Thus, the research recommends continuing the MSW management project.

Opis:
A full energy chain analysis (FENCH) or a life cycle analysis (LCA) is indeed essential in making any decision on both minimal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the energy content in various commodities. In this article, the energy Input-Output Analysis (IOA) approach is investigated to determine the factors for the total greenhouse gas emission and total energy content, and it deems the elimination of the boundary constraints existing in the Process Chain Analysis (PCA) approach to be practical to. This study, aims to identify the factors in embedded energy and embedded greenhouse gas (GHG) total values derived from the total Thai economic sectors of 180 in various commodities productions. The previous outdated IOA is enhanced in the study by revising the elements of sectoral energy consumption in the power sector, which is later found to be influential and significant to all other economic sectors. In addition, the 2005 sectoral energy consumption is used to show individual energy consumption, whereas the 2010 Input-Output (I-O) table, most timely data, is used to show the economic structure. Furthermore, the study uses a report of Thai electric power to revise the data of 2005 fuel mix in the power sector in order to obtain the 2010 and 2015 fuel mix. The reason of such revision is that the changes of fuel mix in the power sector are influential towards the factors in both total energy content and total greenhouse (GHG) emission. Hence, the 2015 electricity-fuel mix is taken to present the above-mentioned factors.

Opis:
Retrofitting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in existing buildings and applying energy-efficient technologies can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. In this work, two options of HVAC retrofitting were proposed and discussed for the existing heating system of school of engineering at the University of Jordan as a case study. The experimental tests showed that only one of the three diesel boilers work normally while the other two boilers are not efficient, with actual efficiency of 25%. The first retrofitting was to upgrade the existing heating system to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) boiler system with estimated annual saving of 29,757 Jordanian dinar (JOD), and a payback period of 3.9 years. The second option for retrofitting was a new HVAC system for the building including heating and air conditioning with a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system and heat pump chiller. The estimated cost showed that the VRF system was the lowest one in running cost in winter. The diesel boilers had the highest greenhouse gas emissions with an average value of 377.3 tons of CO2 per year, while LPG boilers achieved the second highest emissions of around 279 tons of CO2 per year, whereas the heat pump chiller in winter produced 199 tons of CO2 and the VRF system emitted 180 tons in winter. The LCCA economic analysis was performed for the proposed systems, showing that the LPG boilers system was more feasible than the diesel boilers system, while the VRF system was more feasible than the heat pump chiller system.
