Opis:
The power industry is one of the most water-consuming industries, therefore water management in this sector of the economy is a very important element of sustainable development. The analysis of the management of water streams at the surface water treatment plant (WTP) with decarbonization and ion exchange for water softening and demineralization was done. The main emphasis was placed on the effect of recycling of water used for the WTP’s own purposes on the quantity of water taken from the river and the quality of treated water. The article shows that water savings should also be sought at WTP in combined heat and power plants. Accurate distribution of used technological water streams and determination of their quality allows for the appropriate indication of the points of their return to the main technological line without additional treatment or only with the use of basic technological processes, e.g. sedimentation. In the analysed WTP, the quality of the backwash water returned after treatment was in terms of parameters, i.e. conductivity, hardness, alkalinity, CODKMnO4 and iron concentration, better than the quality of raw surface water. The reduction in the amount of water abstracted due to recycling of water treatment plant technological waters was about 8.3% (approximately 130 000 m3/year).

Opis:
Phytoremediation is considered of a cost effective and environmentally friendly technology and has been used successfully for the remediation of soils and water contaminated with various pollutants. Specifically for full scale application to treat industrial wastewater, phytoremediation is used as sole technology for different types of wetlands. However, phytoremediation of polluted water in wetland type reactor has been mostly studied as black box. The method to measure the performance is only based on pollutant removal efficiency and there is very limited information available about of the pollutant removal mechanisms and process dynamics in these systems. Thus, the aim of this chapter was to briefly review basic processes of phytoremediation, its mechanisms and parameters, and its interaction between rhizo-remediation and microbe-plant. In addition, this chapter also elaborated phytoremediation challenges and strategies for full-scale application, its techniques to remove both organic and inorganic contaminants by aquatic plants in water, and some examples of applications in industries.

Opis:
Coke oven battery is a complex and multifaceted facility in terms of air pollutant emissions. As far as stack or quenching tower does not cause major difficulties of emission measurement, the fugitive emission measurement from such sources as battery top elements (charging holes, ascension pipes) or oven doors is still complicated and not fully solved problem. This article presents the discussion concerning main problems and errors likely to be made in particular stages of procedure of fugitive emissions characterization from coke oven battery (selection of sampling points, sampling itself, measurement of air velocity over battery top and laboratory analyses). In addition, results of concentrations measurements of selected substances characteristic for the coking process (naphthalene, anthracene, 4 PAHs and TSP) originating from fugitive sources of coke oven battery and subjected to reporting under the E-PRTR are presented. The measurements were carried out on a coke oven battery top in points selected on the basis of the preceding detailed air convection velocity measurements over the battery top. The results of the velocity measurements were compared with results of numerical modelling using CFD software. The presented material is an attempt to cross-sectional presentation of issues related to the quantitative evaluation of fugitive emission from coke oven battery, discussed on the example of PAHs emission as a group of substances characteristic for coking of coal.

Opis:
This study presents the results of examination of the vegetation on the waste landfill of ArcelorMittal-Warszawa steel mill and the furnace waste landfill of Siekierki Power Station, both sites in Warsaw. The presented analyses of the field research contain detailed floristic-phytosociological data as well as botanical and ecological evaluation of the identified plants. The vegetative structures, together with the succession trends of the vegetation cover of two examined landfills, have been shown. Ecological habitat adaptations of plants and their spatial structure have been evaluated. The inventoried flora has been subjected to taxonomic, syntaxonomic and ecological classification. 154 plant species from 48 taxones in the range of families have been identified. Families characterized by the biggest abundance of species were: Compositae, grasses and Fabaceae. More than half of the live forms indentified were hemicryptophytes. The vegetation of two landfills has been dominated by synantrophic communities (Stellarietea mediae, Artemisietea vulgaris, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea), with apophytes being in the largest number. With the use of ecological indicators a broad ecological tolerance of the majority of species toward ecological factors has been observed.
