Preliminary study of the total dust exposure in the textile industry of Semarang city is 233 μg/Nm3, which exceeds the quality standard. The high concentration of dust is influenced by increased productivity, so that it has the potential as a source of pollutants that can affect the respiratory system of workers. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dust exposure and respiratory disorders symptoms in workers. The method used is a cross-sectional study with a sample size of 161 people and 6 points of dust measurement locations. The Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) standardized questionnaire was used to collect data. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 24 with Chi square and Binary logistic regression tests to determine the relationship. The results showed that the average dust concentration exceeded the quality standard, namely 4 location points for PM2.5, 1 location point for PM10, and 2 location points for total dust. The average exposure to respirable dust is 3.93 μg/m3, which exceeds the quality standard. A total of 57% of workers experienced symptoms of respiratory disorders with the results of bivariate statistical analysis of 5 significant variables, namely PM2.5 (p = 0.021), PM10 (p = 0.002), total dust (p = 0.000), respirable dust (p = 0.002), and working period (p = 0.037). Meanwhile, the results of the binary logistic regression test had 2 significant variables, namely total dust (p = 0.000) and respirable dust (p = 0.006). The conclusion of this study is that total dust and respirable dust that exceed the quality standard have a higher risk of causing respiratory disorders symptoms with a probability of 71.6% and dust may be minimized by adding a pneumablo to each machine.

The abundance of microplastics (MP) in the aquatic environment is increasingly disturbing for maritime countries, especially Indonesia, because it has the potential to threaten the health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. This review summarized and discussed the distribution of MP abundance in Indonesian aquatic ecosystems which concluded that rivers, bays and estuaries, beaches, seas, and even fish and shellfish have been contaminated. The highest contamination of MP was found in the waters of Jakarta, West Java, and East Java, which are densely populated areas. The potential threat of exposure and accumulation of MP to human health was also discussed. However, differences in the methods and units of measurement for MP as well as limited information regarding the interaction of MP with human organ functions are weaknesses in this review. The future research on the relationship between food and feeding habits of the community around contaminated waters with the accumulation of MP in the human body is needed to identify the prevention and treatment strategies.

In the current decade, the fact that climate change is a continuous process and that humans have been contributing to this change is indisputable. Therefore, the whole society and the decision-makers who guide the process of application of regional policy principles, are facing a challenge as to which measures need to be taken to minimise the consequences of this change. Although we live in a global world, it can be observed that interactions occur in each unit on an individual basis. As we have more and more knowledge and information on the space, we can indicate which units, regions and spaces have the greatest predisposition to be subject to climate change. Moreover, being aware of the level of risk, we can attempt to implement tools that will help society to accept climate change and properly adapt to it. A space’s predisposition to climate change is not only determined by the weather, environmental or geographical conditions. The literature on the subject indicates three basic determinants of the predisposition, i.e. the exposure, vulnerability and the adaptive capacity. Only all of these elements grouped together can provide an answer to the question about a unit’s predisposition. The article focuses on the indices which represent all three determinants of the predisposition. It should be noted that depending on the availability of data and their aggregation, there is no possibility of using the same indices for all countries. This, however, does not prevent the performance of a uniform analysis for spaces included in the same statistics. The article presents a case study for agricultural land in the province of Warmia and Mazury. Using Ward’s method, four subregions with similar determinants of the predisposition to climate change were distinguished. Three subregions stand out, as two of them have a significant impact of exposure (S.1) and vulnerability (S.2), while the third subregion dominates in terms of adaptive capacity (S.4).

Opis:
Air pollution is a global problem. In Europe, ambient air quality remains poor in many areas, particularly in urban ones. Air pollutants have a significantly adverse effect on human health and ecosystems. They are the main cause of many serious illnesses and thus contribute to increased mortality. This paper analyzes the air pollutant emissions in the last four years (2018–2021) in the Upper Silesian Region, which has one of the worst air qualities in Poland and in Europe in general, and the emissions in the Lublin Region in eastern Poland, which is considered as a clean region. In each of the above-mentioned regions, the areas with the highest air pollutant emissions were specified i.e. the Upper Silesian Agglomeration and the Lublin Agglomeration. The emission data for the following pollutants: particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) have been compared. The obtained results were also compared with the estimated average emissions in Poland. It was indicated that in both agglomerations the exposure to air pollutants was on similar levels, which were several times higher than in the remaining parts of the considered regions and the average values for Poland in general. In the Silesian Agglomeration, the exposure to PM10 was over 5 times higher than the average national exposure. The exposure to PM2.5 was almost 6 times higher, the exposure to BaP was about 5 times higher, while the exposure to SOx and NOx was 16 and 10 times higher than the national average, respectively. This is reflected in the increased number of premature deaths and the number of years of life lost due to the exposure to air pollution. Therefore, the actions aimed at limiting air pollutant emissions are urgent in the above-indicated areas.

Opis:
Wyniki analizy chemicznej posłużyły do szacunkowej oceny narażenia mieszkańców Zabrza, drogą pozażywieniową, na kadm, ołów i rtęć i stanowiły podstawę do oceny ryzyka zdrowotnego związanego z wtórnym pyleniem z hałd poprzemysłowych.
The aim of the study was to assess the non-dietary exposure of Zabrze residents to the heavy metals contained in the post-mining waste stored in this city in the form of heaps. The samples of waste material taken from five heaps located in Zabrze, were subjected to the chemical analysis related to the Cd, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, Ni, Cr, and Cu content. The results of the chemical analysis were used to estimate the exposure of Zabrze residents by non-dietary ingestion to cadmium, lead and mercury and they were the basis for assessing the health risk associated with secondary dusting from post-industrial dumps. The vast majority (70%) of the tested samples taken from the industrial waste in Zabrze showed the concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) exceeding the highest acceptable values many times, which could constitute a significant source of exposure of the city residents to these metals. In the extreme case, the maximum admissible concentrations were exceeded 27 times. Estimation of the non-dietary exposure of Zabrze inhabitants to the Pb present in the waste collected on one of the dump indicates a significant risk for people walking or running on this area, as a result of secondary dusting. The presence of such high concentrations of heavy metals, especially very toxic and carcinogenic cadmium, lead and arsenic in the analyzed samples indicates the need to protect the surface of waste dumps from secondary dusting and to implement other preventive measures that reduce the exposure of Zabrze residents to heavy metals.

The purpose of this study is to report particle number (PN) and particle mass (PM) concentration changes in the church during three 60-minute Masses held on a cloudy, sunny and rainy day. At each Mass with a similar number of participants the same number of candles was lit and incense was burned. The highest average PN1 and PM1 concentrations of submicrometer particles which respectively amounted to 23.9 pt/cm3 and 241.1 µg/m3 were obtained for the Mass held on a rainy day. During that Mass the maximum PN1 and PM1 concentrations (amounting to 59.4×103pt/cm3 and 632 µg/m3) were respectively about 15 and 39 times higher than the church background levels. The greatest number of submicrometer particles (about 18.5×109) was inhaled by an average participant of the Mass held on a sunny day and it was approximately 7 times higher than the number that would have been inhaled at the same time outdoors. The greatest mass of such particles (about 195.4 µg) was inhaled by an average participant of the Mass held on a rainy day and it was approximately 8 times higher than the mass of particles that would have been inhaled outdoors during the same time.

Pesticides are at risk due to their toxic properties in humans as well as impact on the environment and ecosystems. Indonesia has 1,336 formulations and 402 pesticide ingredients registered to control pests in various commodity fields. The negative effects of synthetic chemical pesticides are resistance, resurgence, second pest blasting, and environmental degradation. Pesticide residues on the soil and agricultural products can cause bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes. The biomagnification process can cause exposure to pesticides that enter the human body to a greater degree than the residues found in the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to research the life cycle analysis of exposure and pesticide residues in agricultural environments. This study is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample in this study was 120 respondents. This research was conducted in the Wanasari subdistrict, Brebes regency. Wanasari subdistrict is the largest shallot-producing centre in Brebes regency (26%). The shallot harvest area in Wanasari district is 6,598 ha. The life cycle analysis (LCA) results of shallot farming include five stages: soil maturation, planting seedlings, fertilizing, applying pesticides, and harvesting. The emissions in shallot farming activities come from diesel fuel, pesticides, and NPK fertilizers. Chlorpyrifos pesticide residues were found with an average level of 0.6451 ppm in 9 villages in Wanasari district.

Opis:
Przyspieszenie prac nad weryfikacją dyrektywy 2004/37/WE i poszerzenia wykazu substancji z wartościami wiążącymi do 2020 r. o 50 substancji chemicznych o działaniu rakotwórczym i/lub mutagennym, to priorytetowy kierunek działań UE w dziedzinie bhp.
The exposure of workers to carcinogens in a workplace is a crucial issue of occupational health and safety. For carcinogens, it is not possible to determine safe levels of exposure, because any contact with them poses a risk to the health of the worker. The differences observed in occupational exposure limits for carcinogens are largely due to the differences in cancer risk levels used. Therefore, it is necessary to provide employers of companies producing, using or processing carcinogens with methods and tools for estimation and qualitative evaluation of exposure to these dangerous substances that are simple to use, but give reliable results. Accelerating work on the review of Directive 2004/37/EC and extending the list of substances with the binding values until 2020 with 50 carcinogenic and/or mutagenic substances, is a priority direction of EU actions in the field of occupational health and safety.

This paper discusses a new Implant Safety Tool, used to assess the safety of patients with metal implants exposed to radio-frequency (RF) fields. This specialist tool is discussed on the example of pectus patients with titanium bar-implant inserted during the minimally invasive Nuss procedure. The authors created a 3D realistic model of a 34-year-old male patient with a Nuss bar-implant. A numerical analysis based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was performed for a far field source in the form of a plane wave with the frequency of 64 MHz, which corresponds to the RF exposure generated by MRI devices at 1.5 T. The obtained results allow concluding that the concave Nuss bar-implant poses no risk during environmental and occupational RF field exposures.

The paper presents the results of the research of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with four fractions of particulate matter (PM, PM10, PM2,5 and PM1; fractions of particles whose aerodynamic diameter ranges from 30 nm to respectively: 100, 10, 2.5 and 1 μm) conducted at points located on the side of a highway and at a busy crossroads in Katowice. The highway research was carried out in the spring, and the crossroads research in the summer of 2012. Samples were taken by low pressure impactor DEKATI. The analysis of PAHs in ambient particulate matter samples was performed by gas chromatography. The average concentration of the sum of 16 PAH associated with PM, which amounted to 14.6 ng/m3 in the spring, was two times higher than in the summer. This concentration was a few or even several times lower than the levels recorded earlier in the cities of southern Poland in the winter. Meanwhile, indicators of toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity calculated for PAH at the highway and the crossroads were high. This indicates high health risk generated by the presence of PAHs in the Katowice air also in spring and summer time. The values of diagnostic ratio, roughly showing the origin of PAHs associated with the PM, confirmed that during the period of the research transportation was the main source of PAHs in both points of Katowice.
