Opis:
In the model experiment, an assessment of the role of plants in the reclamation of the bed of combustion waste from coal-based power plants fertilised with compost and sewage sludge. The bed of combustion waste was stored in cylindrical containers with a diameter of 80 cm (0.5 m2 of surface) and the height of 100 cm. The first stage of the experiment was carried out in 2006–2007. Then the bed was fertilised with four types of compost and sewage sludge, and then seeded with four species of grasses and white mustard. The second stage was undertaken in 2011–2013. In 2011, mixture of four species of grasses and white mustard was seeded on the same bed. It was assumed that the continuation of research in the second stage, whose results of are presented in this paper, will show a broader spectrum of vegetation changes, what will accurately track the process of biological reclamation of the bed of combustion waste. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of reclamation in the experiment, based on the percentage estimates of the coverage of species and crop yields. During the three-year (second stage) experiment 78 species of self-seeding plants belonging to 19 taxa in the rank of families and 11 syntaxonomic groups were recorded. The most numerous were the families: aster family, grass family, papilionaceous family, goosefoot family and cabbage family. Among the syntaxonomic groups the dominating species belonged to the class Stellarietea mediae, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Artemisietea vulgaris. Among the forms of life hemicryptophyte and therophytes were the most represented. Highest total yields of plants were found in model containers with Complex compost and Radiowo compost and the model of sewage sludge. Based on the estimated models in each degree of coverage of species and crop yield, the highest reclamation efficiency was demonstrated in the models of reclamation of composts Complex and Radiowo, as well as in the model of sewage sludge. The lowest efficiency was demonstrated in models of composts ZUSOK and plant composts.

Opis:
Zasady inżynierii ekologicznej zastosowano w modernizacji budowanej Elektrowni Opole, wraz z nowoczesnymi instalacjami ochrony środowiska. Przyznanie Elektrowni „Opole” S.A certyfikatu zgodności systemu zarządzania środowiskowego z normą ISO 14001 nadanego przez British Standards Institution, dowiodło zasadności kontynuowania budowy zakładu energetycznego spełniającego wymogi 21 wieku. Zaawansowana budowa dwóch kolejnych bloków o łącznej mocy 1800 MW w Elektrowni Opole S.A. dowodzi merytorycznej zasadności i skuteczności seminarium z roku 1992.
Principles of ecological engineering were applied for upgrading the Opole Power Plant under construction, complete with modern installation to protect the environment. The modernized project was a subject of „Integrated environmental impact assessment of the Opole Power Plant” developed by the Institute of Environmental Protection in 1981. The main issues covered by the impact assessment were presented and discussed at the national scientific conference attended, among others, by the representatives of local community from Opole. The conference was organized by the Polish Society of Ecological Engineering on June 5 and 6, 1992. The main aim of the conference was to identify and deliver as broad as possible analysis of environmental conditions for designing, building and operating coal fired power plants. A secondary goal, though of main concern for the Opole agglomeration, was to evaluate many-sided environmental risks resulting from the construction and operation of the Power Plant. The feasibility of continuing the construction of a power generating facility that meets the requirements of the 21st century was demonstrated by the fact that the Opole Power Plant S.A. was awarded the ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System certificate by the British Standards Institution. Advanced construction of the two consecutive blocks of a combined power of 1800 MW in the Opole Power Plant substantiates the validity and effectiveness of the conference organized in 1992.

Opis:
The article presents the results of investigations focused on the determination of mercury content in gas and solid samples. The emission of Hg was the result of coal combustion. The investigations were carried out in the selected power generation facilities operated with pulverized coal and circulating fluidized bed boilers. Analysis was carried out for the flue gases, as well as fuel and sorbent samples and the by-products of the combustion process (fly ash, slag, bottom ash, and the products of wet desulfurization technology). The determination of mercury content in solid samples was carried out using Lumex RA-915+ spectrometer with RP-91C attachment. The measurements of the mercury concentration in the flue gases were performed according to the cold vapor technique. The analysis of the results indicated that the main source of mercury is coal, but significant concentration was also determined for the biomass co-combusted in one of the facilities. Considerable amounts were also determined in fly ash and wet FGD (flue gas desulfurization) samples.

Opis:
The article discusses the research on CO2 emissions at the stage of electric engine vehicle operation. The operation stage includes, among others use of the vehicle as well as maintenance and charging for the vehicle’s propulsion. The origin of the electricity consumed during charging has an impact on the vehicle’s emissions balance. The scope of considerations concerns coal as the main energy carrier in Poland. The obtained results can be a benchmark for comparing other primary energy sources used for electricity production. Based on the collected technical data of electric cars, the values of CO2 emission factors from electricity production in thermal power plants and data on the state and structure of electricity production in Poland, an analysis of CO2 emissions from electric vehicles in the operational stage was performed. The vehicle’s electricity consumption of 0.14–0.16 kWh/km is accompanied by CO2 emissions of 100.94–115.36 g/km. The calculated CO2 exceeds the EU limit value from 01/01/2020 (95 g/km) for average CO2 emissions from new passenger vehicles. The main message of the work is the statement that increasing the efficiency of the electricity generation process in commercial thermal power plants in Poland will translate into a reduction in the emission of electric cars consuming this energy for propulsion. The research shows that the change in the efficiency of energy transformations in a thermal power plant from 38% to 46% leads to a reduction in the emission of an electric vehicle by over 17%. The emission of CO2 from a passenger car with a compression-ignition engine is discussed. The considerations include the stage of the use of the vehicle and the stage of production of diesel oil, which is consumed during the use of the vehicle.
